Ponzi and I are on a Hawaii Cruise this week. We both truly love to go on a cruise. We love it because it’s so flexible. You can be leisurely or adventurous. You can go enjoy things on the Mainlands or on the ship itself… and return to your room with ease. Here are some tips we came up with to help you enjoy your next cruise.

  • Dine late or early if you can. If you go during peak hours, it’s going to be insanely busy on the ship. On this particular cruise, if you dine late you don’t pay the normal rate. You can find specials that they normally won’t have.
  • Casual vs Formal: There’s usually a formal night in most restraunts on the cruise. They require you to dress up, and I’m just not comfortable with that. Be prepared, and bring at least one dressy outfit with you. Check to see how the particular cruise you are going on handles dining before you sign up.
  • Book excursions early. The whole idea of cruises is to go many different places. Booking early guarantees that you get the trips and times you want. We’ve learned over time not to over-book. We’re taking things nice and casual this time. In the past we’ve over-booked… and it made things hectic.
  • If you can, get a room with a view! Rooms on the interior are cheaper, yes. However, if you’re going to go… save the extra money to get a room with a deck with an amazing view. It’s definitely worth the extra expenditure. We eat our breakfast on our private patio, while watching the ocean.
  • I’m not wearing the band on my wrist because I need it… I wanted to show you. It’s a band that sends out electrical pulses at timed intervals that will keep you from being seasick. If you know you may suffer from motion sickness, you should think about picking one of these up. The power and settings are adjustable. If you don’t want one of these, at least pick up some Dramamine or motion-sickness patches. Even if you normally don’t get motion sickness symptoms, it’s still a good idea to be prepared with the Dramamine.

I’ve never been on a cruise, but I’ve always wanted to. Although I’ve always had a conscious fear of speedboats, but it’s totally different.

Why the hell are you not just enjoying your vacation, it is like your wife has to share you with the rest of us, she must be a strong woman because my wife left because I was doing just what you are doing, blogging, and web camming to people all over the usa.

What cruise liner are you on? I like the idea of freestyle. If I don’t like the people I sat with on day 1 I wouldn’t like the idea of putting up with that person for the duration of the cruise.

just sad if on hollday you do not dum ass

Who makes that electronic motion sickness device displayed in the video?

Wow what is it with people having against people having a cruise and do a live webcam now and then? Geez go run your own life! I’m sure Chris doesn’t need stupid people telling him how to relax! Seems the people who complain about other people not “screwing” shows they have problems of their own. Do what you do best Chris!!!

Is Ponzi invisible? Or is she nocturnal? :)

it’s also been proved on mythbusters so it has to work

I went on the Norwegian cruise line (the Norwegian sun) and it was great. We had a porch and everything. We went to Alaska and it was pretty cool. Also, I agree with KivaWolf maybe making vids relaxes chris, maybe he really likes too, if you are gonna bitch about it then just don’t go on youtube and go do something else with your life.

Great tips. It is amazing that those armbands thingees work, but they sure do for me. Enjoy your cruise and the warm weather you two!

Chris – you couldn’t have captured my thoughts on cruising any better…. its like your own “floating hotel”. You can see many different ports without have to repack/unpack in between. My wife introduced my to cruising early on in our relationship and its amazing. I’ve been on 5 also (with Princess Cruises being our personal favorites) and have done the Western Carribean, Southern Carribean and the Mexican Riviera (a few times).

Booking excursions early is key, but be sure to check the excursion desk once you get on board for late cancellations or possible upgrades as things do tend to open up at the last minute (or get moved around).

Try not to overpack for your excursions. Depending on how your cruiseline disembarks, there may be long crowded lines and you may possibly have to “tender” to shore if you can’t get close to port which means crowding into a smaller vessel. Dress comfortably (hiking shoes or sandals are great) and a smallish hiking backpack to neatly tuck away whatever items you need. Also be sure to bring your sunglasses a hat and sunscreen as you never know what the whether will bring.

If you’re travellling with kids, as I am, then its a whole difference experience. just you and Ponzi wait.. you’ll see. Check the cruise ship for the age limits and activities of their babysitting services and kid activities. Getting your kids to want to go and hang out there makes things quite enjoyable for the parents. Some cruiselines offer the parents “pagers” in case there’s an issue. That gives you peace of mind knowing that you can be reached and don’t have to go check up on them.

You don’t HAVE to go onshore. There are PLENTY of activities to do onboard. Be sure to check the daily schedules. Most ships will deliver a daily activity sheet to your door the night before.

If you’re planning on attending any shows, be sure to get there early.. .they ALWAYS fill up fast. Especially ones that entertain kids too (such as the magic shows).

I think the most important thing to remember is sea-sick medicine… i.e Dramamine. I can’t go on a boat with out it and it can definitely ruin a great trip.

I hate cruising! You might get thrown overboard!

Hey Chris, i saw this video and i could only wish i saw it before i went on the school trip 2 years back, i went to ireland on a big boat, it was a 4 hour trip but it felt like 4 days, about 20 minutes into the trip i became very sick i wasnt aware i could become sea sick because i had never experienced it before so Chris thank you i will remember this for the next time.
