Cruise Ship Internet

I’m sorry about the bad image and sound quality. We are on a cruise ship in Hawaii right now. I’m using the Internet via a connection provided to me from Ustream.tv. This is, of course, a mobile broadband connection. I came up with some tips to help you deal with this type of connection, if you ever happen to be on a cruise.

  • Buy larger packages of time. Most cruise ships have Internet available. The company will have packages available for sale. Always go with more minutes.
  • Find a friendly cruise ship. All companies work differently with their connectivity. This company was pricey, so I’m not using their connection.
  • Get a sponsor if you can. I was lucky to have Ustream.tv sponsor me for this connection.
  • Turn it into a business expense. This will minimize the impact of the out-of-pocket cost. So long as I stream live from the ship and do some videos like always… it’s a business expense.
  • Do what you can do offline. Write the blog post out offline, then post it once you get online. Or… get your emails ready to send, then get online. This will save you a lot of time and expense.
  • If you can, rely on your existing phone for your connectivity. Some devices do work as a modem, and will work very well.

Never lost connectivity on a ship but lost it all together while on trips.

ok… glad to know ur enjoying the trip!

soz, i sed that b/c i thought there was no sound. but still, r u back yet? cuz its kinda confuzing the way ur posting a vid in ur normal background, then u post a vid on ur cruise

Yeah that confused me too, but hes not streaming when he is showing the normal backround and Hes supposed to come back monday night

I was waiting for someone to walk up behind you and say, “OMG! It’s Chris Pirillo!”. While you were streaming.

Your spelling, grammar and punctuation confuses me.

On Halo 3 there is a map of the world with white dots indicating people online in that area. Every so often you’ll see random dots out in the middle of the ocean where there are no islands, I’ve been told they are people on cruise ships.

Ha lol that would be great and then add the always used “Hi Mum” phrase.

Does anyone else see a darkened image, and the message “An error occurred, please try again later.”? This is the second video I’ve watched, made by Chris, that has this. Do all of Chris’ videos have this problem?

…You thought I didn’t know that? I just meant that you should type out your damn words.

I’ve never been on a cruise ship. If it costs so much i might get a mobile broadband (verizon or sprint) the using of the phone is a great idea.

Dunno about you, but on my vacation, a laptop, the internet etc is the last thing I want!

Take a week off chris and spend time with your wife, you’ve earned it!

A VACATION is meant to get you away from all this.

I did take my laptop on vacation just to watch DVDs and play music in the hotel room, but checking email or going on-line, streaming video, give it a rest for a week.

Alsome Information thanks so much. I can used these tips when i go on crusie very soon do airlines have theses??

Maybe, if you don’t want to buy the Internet access on the Cruise Ship, check if they offer the Internet Kiosk option. I don’t know how much the Internet Kiosk charge for the minute, but may be a last minute resource, for E-mail checking.

This is a really good idea, but in my experience with satellite internet its not going to even come close to a cable connection, more like the slower DSL connections. I think the best option to like what Chris did and get a wireless provider to get a connection. As we saw from the live stream, they are not perfect, but its good enough.

Very good video Chris! I recently saw a commercial on television for satellite internet. They couldn’t stop talking about how good it was and wouldn’t say a price. I went on their website and their cheapest plan was $79.99/month. I wouldn’t recommended satellite internet to anyone.

These are great tips thank you Chris. I have always wonder what the best way to connect to the internet would be when there is no external wireless service or when there is one that is to expensive.

Mobile broadband is way too expensive for the amount I’d use it. If I want to go on the internet in an airport I’ll just buy an hour or something. If I’m on a cruise ship and I want to go on the internet, I’ll just pay however much they charge for it.

When i went on a cruise i pretty much flipped the wifi switch and started outlook downloading my email, flipped the switch again when it finished, replied to the emails that needed replying and flipped the switch to send them. The pricing wasn’t to bad by the minute on our cruise, but we are cheap what else can i say?

i like to use the verizon card but cost to much and i think it dont work were i live so makes it pointless for me but nice videos on the cruise.

Id love to have one of the cards, only way I can go wireless evrywhere is though my mobile phone but it would cost alot.

Cruise would be great… Nice tips!

If I was to go on a cruise, id definitely get a mobile phone card, even if its just for a few weeks and then terminate the contract, as it would be much cheaper than using the ships internet for a lot of online work. Thank you for another wonderful video Chris, and keeping us updated on your vacation, I do hope you had a good one!

hey chris. Those are some good tips. I think that the Do what you can Offline tip is very good. Why connect and then type up everything when you can type it up then connect and send your emails or post your blogs.

Nice vid chris! I don’t actually have a mobile broadband card but i do tether my pocket pc to my laptop. this works great for me. i can be on the go and still have internet and not need to be connected to wifi. I want to get the wireless card so i don’t have to have a usb cord connected to my phone.

hello chris, i know that this has nothing to do on any thing but what cruise ship did you travel on your vaction. you show is the best by they way i come in to chat all the time

The more things change…the more they stay the same. Your tip about composing your email and doing as much of the work off-line as possible was the only way to survive in the good old days of dial up internet.

Man those prices are crazy. That is why I prefer to stay in a hotel, where I cannot get seasick and there is usually free Wi-Fi at a decent speed depending at what hotel you stay at.

There are internet cafe on most every port of call. The one in Kona was $2.50 for 15 minutes, $6 per hour. You can use thier PC or connect via wireless most of the time. For simple e-mail I downloaded and got off line, replied and then went back on to send. 2 x $2.50; probably much better than on board.

i think fonzi is in it for the money

On vacation ? Geeze, the last thing I want to do is check my email and waste time on You Tube.

Adam

its ponzi there bud! Not fonzi. This isnt like happy days ya know braaaaaaaaa!
