I have a Vado HD and a Macbook pro w/ imovie. There is a transfer button on the Vado Central application. The transfer option allows you to convert the videos to imovie, just click transfer and select the imovie drop box and when you open imovie you can import them in. It keeps all the quality as the Vado and works well.

hi, I have a different problem with my vado. I can import the videos fine into imovie09 with the vado central software downloadable from their support page and they all have sound... But anyone in the video sounds like a freakin' chipmunk!
has any one had this problem before?
is there anything I can do in imovie to fix this problem? I love the Vado, I think it better than my flip mino, but it simply isn't mac friendly, shame :(

Gary,

If you download the free Perian software, or the "new" software that's available on Creative's website, (as discussed above) you'll be able to playback (and see) your videos in iphoto, as far as I know. Mine play, but I also have a free downloadable version of quicktime too. Either way, with both of those, mine play back with audio and video.

The problem I'm having is that I cannot edit in iMovie WITH audio. I'm told that I can do so with Quicktime PRO, and Streamclip, but I'm unable to acquire it at present. Someone also mentioned something called DV kitchen (?) which I've never had experience with.. for converting video. Is there any software that someone knows of other than quicktime pro that will let me edit in iMovie WITH sound?

I have the Vado HD, and a mac. I've heard that to be able to edit my videos in iMovie WITH sound - I need streamclip (which I've downloaded) AND Quicktime Pro. Video simply converted to import into iMovie, using streamclip, has no accompanying audio.
Now -my understanding is, that Quicktime Pro isn't available online. It's something I have to physically purchase. My problem is that I'm in a foreign (and undeveloped) country and cannot receive mail, so I cannot order quicktime pro.
Is there ANY other program that will convert audio as well, so I can edit in iMovie? I've been out of the states now for almost a month without being able edit or post videos because of this problem. Lesson learned, in my case. Should have bought a mino.
Any answers?

So I have the vado and the flip mino hd....I can confirm that (1) as Chris has set out, the vado is a better device in most ways (screen quality, image quality (barely perceptible), zoom quality, battery swap) except for the flip out USB (I prefer the mino) (2) the flip mino HD is designed for the mac. If you have a mac, until imovie itself includes the drivers for the native avi video produced by the vado, it is a waste of time on a mac (literally). The mino works like a charm - I store basic video content in iphoto (as my library), then can view this content just like images in imovie. I can pick and choose what I want. Any vado content is visible from iphoto, but not available to imovie without going through about 15 minutes of conversion hand springs. The vado is really nice, but a serious pain to use on a mac.

Thanks for this post - good info.

If you can find a copy of VisualHub (no longer being supported or distributed) it converts .avi files from the Vado HD 2nd gen into MP4. It's easy to drag and drop a batch of files for processing.

I also just used DV Kitchen (created to transcode video for the web) and created a "recipe" for converting .avi files from the Vado HD 2nd gen to Apple ProRes 422LT .mov files. I also used it to convert the .avi files from the Vado to H.264 MP4 files.

Yes, it takes time to transcode and any high quality codec used for the end result will increase the file size. But you'll find the transcoded video will play in iMovie or FinalCut much better.

Prepping files for edit is part of the workflow of all professional editors. It's just not mentioned by people selling extremely easy-to-use video cams like the Vado.

The software released by creative for importing is a bundling of perian with creative's own solution...still takes forever to get the files into imovie, and if you store them in iphoto (which I do), you still have to go through the processing step using perian outside of creative's solution. Its a hack attempt by Creative to get the video into iMovie, not a real solution.

So I am bailing on the vado...while I do think its video quality is better, I just can't be bothered with the inconvenience of importing into iMovie. Getting me a flip mino HD.

Creative just released OSX software that imports movies directly from VADO HD to imovie. You can get it on support.creative.com under the VADO 2nd generation support. It works with the original VADO HD just fine as well.

I also encountered the "no audio" problem when converting Vado HD .avi clips to .mp4 using Streamclip. The workaround I came up with:

Open the .avi clips from the Vado in Quicktime Pro.
"Save As" from Quicktime Pro to .MOV.
Using Streamclip, convert .MOV to .MP4.

The resulting MP4 will have audio, and will import properly into iMovie 09.

Love the quality when played on big HD screen. However, need help when transfering to iMovie '06hd. What is the procedure? Without complications.

This time I was mad at Chris. Why, oh WHY didn't he make it bold and in capital letters that this nifty camera is NOT compatible with iMovie???? All suggested solutions seem to me like extracting teeth through one asshole. Disgusted! Feel like he was paid to push this product...
