Could Leopard Trump Vista?
Not sure. eHomeUpgrade has secured a top secret list that's allegedly from “a confidential source working with Apple.” I'm impressed with what I've read, but I don't know if it's enough to get Windows users to switch to a more expensive platform that only has one mouse button (which is the one thing holding me back from scoring a MacBook Pro). The possible features that titilate me:
- During the Leopard install, you are given the option to create specific partitioning to accommodate M$ Vista and Linux. Reformatting your HD is not required. Depending on your processor and RAM, all OS’s can run simultaneously & independently. A (minimum) 150 GB HD is required (250 GB is recommended), and 2 GB RAM (minimum) should you wish to run more than one OS. Dual processors are required for optimum performance, though this may change in 10.5.1 or 10.5.2.
- Hooks are built-in to support an Apple PDA, but I can say no more.
- You can have 3 ‘Finder’ windows open simultaneously, much like having 3 displays, all running different applications or OS’s. If networked, any 3 computers can be displayed. Depending on the function/application, you can even Drag & Drop between displays. Password or Admin. privileges are required. (see #2 above).
- Mail, Address Book, iCal, iSight, and iChat will become one integrated application, much like Entourage (but better). Included is a customizable Auto Responder and voice activated dialing via numbers or Address Book names. You will be able to automatically send email & initiate iSight meetings, etc. that are linked/pegged to specific calendar events. This feature is called AutoPilot (see #6 above).
- An across the board speed increase of 35 - 40%. YMMV.
- Airport (Extreme only) will notify you via the airport icon flashing in the menu bar if your signal is being hijacked or used by anyone other than you authorized.
If eHomeUpgrade gets slapped by Apple within the next couple of days, I'd guess his source was revealing something too close to the truth. Certainly, Apple has to make a good showing before (or when) Vista hits the shelves. OS X and Windows will finally be competing on equal footing - if only we could get Apple to let PC users run the OS without oddball hackery.

Okay, first of all, saying the only thing holding you back from getting a MacBook Pro is that it only has one mouse button is BEYOND ASININE. Seriously. How many times can you fulfill the same stereotypes? Get past it. This is like not buying a car because you don't like the door handle. It's idiocy.
Second, most of that list sounds like pure nonsense. It sounds like the kinds of things people make up when they describe what THEY would want in an OS.

I blogged this too, only to see a disclaimer this morning that they were duped by an April Fools Joke.

Chris, the mouse thing is ridiculous. First of all, there is shareware called SideTrack that will let you right-click on the MacBook Pro. It's not yet a univeral binary, so it only works with the older Powerbooks/iBooks, but the point is the functionality will be there soon and was there with previous generation notebooks: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20854
Secondly, just plug in any USB mouse and you have all the mouse buttons you want, including the Mighty Mouse, which I use. It's not like OS X doesn't work with right-clicking.
Lastly, Apple hardware might be more expensive than the typical plastic-laden **** from Best Buy slapped with tacky Intel/MS stickers, but as with other things in life like luxury autos and fine wine, you get what you pay for. Surely, this small premium isn't a deterrent factor for you. Apple's high prices is a MYTH and they are fairly responsible when you look at what you get, combined with the fact that Macs seem to have longer lifespans than PCs.
BTW, I am writing this on my 20″ iMac Core Duo. Switcher since 2004 and never going back!

The real question is can Vista trump Tiger… I think the answer is no.
Don’t get me wrong here, Im not an Apple cheerleader or a Microsoft hater (though I become more of one daily)…
But what’s in Vista… like seriously?
- You have the same insecure Kernel (they’ve already hooked it without it throwing up warning flags)
- You have aero (which does nothing but make windows uglier and even harder to navigate)
- You have DX10 (which is nothing but a microsoft market share grab so they can unify coding between X-Box360 and PC)
-You have an enormous price-tag.
All the things that *might have at one point justified upgrading have been nerfed or removed*. You know, things such as:
-WinFS (Don’t let MS fool you about Vista searching capabilities- they’re worse than XP and nowhere even in the vicinity of coming close to nearly approaching spotlight)
-32bit HD Support (64bit Kernel only)
-Better memory management (memory management still sucks, perhaps worse than ever… they just have more of it to abuse)
The bottom line is, Tiger is a better OS than Vista and it’s been on the market for over a year. The only thing Windows does better than OS-X is take just about any combination of hardware on earth and run it under on OS… but that advantage is rapidly eroding away, as half the hardware on planet earth has either:
1: No vista driver
2: No 64bit support
3: All the above.
Sooner or later people will catch on that OS-X really is just better, and I have a feeling it’ll be around the time that Windows Apps can execute natively within OSX… which ain’t but a hop skip and a jump away.
Cheers all!

I dont think leopard is better…..i think they are both about the same because they each have there own individual pros and cons
