Copius Mobius Foibles?
Ya know, after reading Mitch Ratcliffe's post regarding last weekend's trip to The Campus (and Doc Searls' Blogo Culpa), I just thought I'd clear the air on a few things. (1) I'm not a journalist. (2) I don't get invited to go to many places throughout the year. (3) If I do get invited, I usually have to pay my own way. (4) Since I can't usually afford to pay my own way, I don't usually get to go. (5) “Underground” sites don't usually get the recognition / attention that major media players do. (6) I have no problem telling you that I saw cool stuff this weekend. (7) I have no problem telling you that I told Microsoft where they were messing up. (8) More companies should treat their enthusiasts / evangelists the way Beth Goza treated us. (9) Markets are still conversations. (10) Nobody pays me to say anything I don't want to say. (11) If you didn't go, you don't really know what went on. (12) Bill Gates wasn't at the junket, he probably doesn't know who I am, nor does he really care what I do or say. (13) I'm tired of having to rely on press releases and third-party information; I need to base my opinions on solid experiences. The only way that's going to happen is if I'm thrown into a hands-on situation. (14) There were Palm devices aplenty at Mobius 2002. (15) There were Apple iPods aplenty at Mobius 2002. (16) There was talk of Linux at Mobius 2002. (17) This guy challenged just about everything that was presented. (18) 75% of us still aren't sold on the Smartphone concept. (19) 100% of us didn't get a Smartphone to run through the wringer. (20) Palm has never invited me to learn more about their products.
To expand upon my seventh point, there are quite a few flaws inherent with Pocket PC 2002 devices. The first of which I've bitched about on several occasions (including this weekend). Sure, the Viewsonic V35 is VERY nice – but it also lacks something which 99% of the other devices on the market lack: a protective cover. As far as I'm concerned, the Jornada series is the only one that was designed correctly. Business card beaming should work differently, too; instead of both parties having to initiate the transfer, the recipient's device should automatically respond with its own vCard to complete the exchange (only after accepting the initial request). The Pocket PC Phone Edition also falls short in several areas. The built-in software doesn't allow for direct voice dialing, nor does it allow you to attach pictures to the profiles in your Contact list (for an enhanced Caller ID experience). I could go on and on and on, but – I already did this past weekend to people who were listening to me. That's why they invited us there, folks – to continue the conversation. And we did. Period. For whatever it's worth.

on auto reception of business cards: wouldn't this open up everyone's palm to receiving spam? and worse, for spammers to just walk around public areas collecting email addresses, phone numbers, and more? what about viruses?

I envy you, Chris. It's one thing to be a blogger and write stuff about the technology you love, but it's entirely another to have your opinion/audience valued enough to be able to make these kinds of press junkets. And really, I always get the vibe that you're a huge Microsoft supporter, and so I'm not sure what this guy was expecting. Sure, you support Microsoft and you enjoy their products, so why would your opinion be any different if you're presented something great at the show?

I don't mean to pick on you, Jeremy, since you're not the only one who has voiced these opinions, but I feel compelled to respond. It got REALLY long, so it's on my blog…
