Convert Windows Media Center DVR-MS to MPG

http://live.pirillo.com/ – Mool212 records TV shows using the Windows Media Center. He’s confused as to how to convert those files into other formats, and then be able to burn them onto a DVD. Luckily, there are some excellent tools that can help.
My friend Rakesh from Couchville.com is also the CEO of the Beyond TV program. This handy little program features some amazing things:
- No Subscription Fees. Ever.
- Skip commercials and other parts of TV shows
- Search for shows on actor, director, or title
- Burn DVDs of your TV recordings
- Automatically sync recordings to iPod, iPhone or Apple TV
- Intelligent Program Guide resolves conflicts
- Record HDTV from free, over-the-air or Clear QAM digital TV signals
Another place to get help in converting your Windows Media Center files is thegreenbutton.com. They have an excellent program there to convert DVR-MS to MPEGs.
SC_Thor recommends using FFMPEG. This is an open-source program that will take virtually any audio or video format, and convert it to any other format… for free. You can then put them into your DVD burning program.
As far as my recommendation for putting things onto DVD, it’s Nero. This is probably the best program I’ve used for burning purposes. I’m a Nero MVP, and help provide feedback to them. So if you have any suggestions or comments you would like to get to someone at Nero, be sure and send it to me.

Optimize 3.0 is an excellent tool to have in your arsenal. Use it to clean up your computer, free up space by removing junk files, and to generally speed up your computer. You spend a lot of time using your machine... don't you want it to run at its optimum speed and efficiency?

I don’t have any problems taking a programme recorded with Media Center and burning it to a DVD. This option is built-in to my version of Media Center which shipped with VISTA x64. I do it quite regularly, although Media Center does take a while to trans-code into DVD format and burn it to an actual DVD.
I only wish that Media Center would allow export to other formats, such as xVid and DIVx.

On the subject of Nero – I love the product and have used it since v3.x but I have one problem – It crashes Vista sidebar (surprise, surprise!) Has a fix been found for this or are they working on one?

there’s a fantastic open source tool called “avidemux”, which I haven’t tried on dvr-ms before but it’s worked on every other random thing I’ve thrown at it… mp4, divx, mpg, et al.
I also use beyond tv… been using it since it was known as “snapstream”. it used to be excellent before hdtv. not sure if hdtv is the cause, but I must say the quality seems to be on quite a downtick. the admin tools are no longer officially supported (indicated by “community supported” disclaimer on the web admin tool), and the search feature seems busted… I suspect because I am not on the latest version and support for my version has silently expired. last time I upgraded, stability went out the window, so I was basically forced to reinstall the whole system to the older more stable version from scratch. if btv doesn’t get their act together, I’m considering moving to sagetv (windows) or mythtv (linux).

i have directv, and want to record clips from the directv dvr to my PC. which format will give me the best quality picture and sound? would it be .mpg or dvr-ms?
what product would you recommend to record clips, as one might record on a simple vcr recorder, without all the fancy (and confusing) gadgets that seem to accompany most capture software?
thanks…
