Compact Fluorescent Lights
http://live.pirillo.com/ – Some people consider compact fluorescent light bulbs to be inefficient, while others see them as a long-life replacement from regular incandescent bulbs. Cheaper than LEDs and longer lasting than traditional bulbs, these lights often find themselves on the shopping list of people who need to replace worn out bulbs.
We have a wealth of resources here at Lockergnome covering the Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb:
- What is a Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb?
- The Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Lifespan
- How to Save Money with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
- Tips for Buying Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
In this video, Dan from Technobabble discusses how to properly dispose of these light bulbs, since they do contain mercury (a hazardous substance.)
How do you deal with your fluorescent light bulbs, or do you use them at all?

Just don’t drop the lamp-if it breaks you may spend a small fortune cleaning up the mess-because of the mercury in the lamp.

On a sad note, I read in the paper that you can’t toss these bulbs in the trash when the finally do die as they contain mercury that will contaminate the ground.
I don’t know where to get these recycled yet, but hopefully someone will be able to point that out and make it known before everyone starts dumping these into their local landfill.

There’s also the issue of bulbs that help (or hinder) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I can’t say I’m straight on which is which, but light actually does affect our moods.
Next time you’re out buying bulbs, take a look at the packaging and check for one advertising `natural light’.
Off the top of my head, fluorescent lights don’t go a long way toward helping (or even producing decent light).
Then there’s the noise issue. If you listen to broadcast or shortwave radio, lighting and computers are huge producers of noise.
Just a viewpoint from somewhere way out past left field.

Let’s see, I’ve been using screw in floresents for 27 years now. Biggest problem with them is the noise, electrical and audible. I’ve been using twist type for 7 years, some brands last 2 yers, some 5 years. The biggest problem is if you put them in an enclosed fixture (ceiling can or glass enclosed) they will catch fire. Foutunantly I was home both times this happened. The ones that claim to be dimmable have very short life spans in my experiance.
