A long-time community member and Geeks contributor, Gerald Smith has been missing since Friday night. Gerald’s mother contacted me today, in the hopes that someone in our community may hear from him.

I know that many of you don’t live anywhere near Indiana, where Gerald is from. He attends school at Indiana State University. My assistant Kat happens to live less than an hour from the college, and plans to contact his mother to offer her help in any way that may be needed.

I’m not asking you to reach out to join in the search, especially since you likely don’t live nearby. What I AM asking of you is to pull together as a community. Spread the word. Pass on the link to this post, the YouTube video… anything. Tweet the link, throw it on your MySpace, email your network. Let’s help find Gerald and bring him home for his college graduation in a few days.

To Gerald’s family, friends and classmates: Our thoughts, wishes and prayers are with all of you right now as the search continues. Please know that the power of community is strong, and we will do everything in our power to help.

I’m an Indiana native (graduated from Purdue), but have lived in New Mexico for about 20 years.

If I was a cop, I’d look around college campuses for a missing student. Assuming that the Terre Haute area has been searched and that here haven’t been any prison breaks from the nearby penitentiaries, consider that college students often go to other campuses to visit friends and party (I certainly did, years ago). The campuses in Bloomington, Lafayette, and Indianapolis are not that far away, and the Champaign-Urbana campus in Illinois is relatively close. There are other small campuses like DePauw nearby.

Hope this helps.

I hope he is ok and he is found I sent out a big tweet and a mass text and email all over I will post on my wordpress blog I will post how they can help and all that no geek shell be left behind

Most of my tweets are about missing people because of my experience losing a close friend (Lilly Aramburo missing from Miami, FL since 2007) I’ll definitely do my part to get his info out there. Is there a missing person flyer for him? And do you know if he’s been entered into the National Center for Missing Aduts database? Thanks for including the html to post the video. It makes it that much easier. I hope he’s found safe and gets to graduate with his class.

A sad note: Gerald’s body was found in the Wabash River last night. No other details are available at the moment.

[...] I know i don’t know this chap, however, he’s missing, and that’s not good. A request by Chris Pirillo to pass the information on was posted on his blog [you can read it here] [...]
