Comcast Makes Me Gag

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (or EFF) has found Comcast guilty of traffic shaping. This is a practice where Comcast intentionally slows down your internet connection. The program they used to detect this shaping is an open-source application called WireShark. Apparently, Comcast feels that they need to interrupt some of their customer’s connections a bit if they think the customer may be using lets say BitTorrent to download perfectly legal Linux Distros. Or, maybe the customer is like me and sends tons of data up and down… legally and legitimately… in the course of business.

This is kinda sad. It’s kinda scary. It’s kinda sickening. Well… it makes me…

Yeah. It’s “Comcastic”.

I think your fake gaging there…wait…no I’m wrong. Your gaging. And after seeing this…I will never speak of comcast again.

That’s a shame. I’d heard rumors, but not confirmation until now. Verizon FIOS just came to my area. Sounds like time to switch.

I am a first time blogger. I did not start reading blogs until I started my own. This blog has been so helpful to me as a newbie. Thumbs Up!

It shouldn’t matter if you use it for business or not. You are paying for something they say should move at X rate of speed and then purposely messes with it. I then see they have commerical like Cox Cable saying they have “Powerboost” to help speed up d/l’s. What two faces they have.

I have noticed this many times on my machines when I torrent Linux Distros. Not only does it stop allowing me to access websites but I am only downloading at 60kb/s! I never knew of Traffic Shaping I will have to research it a bit more. It makes sense, this started happening when Adelphia changed to Comcast. Go Figure. Thanks again Chris.

That is sad that they are doing it and have lied about doing it in the past. What happened to coming clean about what your business does? And not telling your CSRs to lie to the public about or risk getting fired?

Those responsible at Comcast for forging packets should be charged for felony interception of communications. The packets were not their property to intercept and forge. The Fed needs to nip this in the bud here and now, not that I have much faith in them looking after public interest any longer. But I have a dream…

We need a government that will protect the people from corporations like Comcast.
I am voting 3rd party.

Yup. Wondered about this when I noticed performance in connection… One minute 54Mbps, then down to 48… sometimes 1?! wtf?

So, I disconnect, reconnect…

It is such crap when we pay for a service and they tweak it to “their” wants as opposed to the customers.
I hope they get stung.

It is a shame that Comcast does this .I have seen my downloads for updates and home stuff either stopped to a crawl or totally stopped in mid stream. Figured at first I had computer problems BUT NOW I SEE THE COMMIE CABLE SYSTEM is doing it. Class action needs to be started, OH I THINK One already has MARK

so what? as a whole they are making the net experience better for everyone. SUre they’ll be some people slowed down by their “mass downloading”…im happy about it, because MOST people are doing it excessively and MOST people actually would like a good internet experience and not have to be slowed down by MASS downloaders downloading their pirated movies, software, and such….i for one enjoy my ridiculous comcast speeds. I LOVE my consistant gaming pings…

Poor baby. you have to wait a few more minutes for your linus uploading or downloading. So freaking what?

Comcast interrupts TV here in South Florida. About once every half hour no matter what channel you are watching, the picture freezes and the sound stops for from 1 to 4 seconds. Then it carries on without ever letting you know what happened. In addition, they interrupt commercials on cable channels with OTHER commercials. And finally, they interrupt cable programs (like CNN headline news for example) with their own local spokesperson conducting the driest and dullest interviews you have ever heard. So when they advertise their computer services I was wondering if they interrupt them too. From your blog it sounds like they do.

I can’t even play xbox live or pc games anymore since this Comcast crap started. Everything times out or just doesn’t connect. I figured it was the Halo 3 launch netquake causing problems but it hasn’t subsided since it started up around mid October (I believe). It’s time to go to Verizon, Buddha forbid.

Oh wow. Thats horrible! I’m downloading wireshark now to see what my ISP is up to.

What program did he say that checks your connection?

All weekend my Comcrap has been going down every few minutes. If I was trying to meet a deadline/school work, etc., I’d be hosed. Once, my modem fried and I had to literally BEG and PLEAD for them to send out a tech.. They warned me, like a tard child, if it was my equipment, I’d have to pay. Did they subtract the days of no access from my bill? Of course not. I love you, Roadrunner! Why did you leave?

For the last 2 days, I had Extremely slow speeds/no email and that’s after restarting router/modem/attached devices, 3x. I called Comcast and they said everyting was fine.. flat out lying. So FUCK YOU Comcast. Every time I see that CEO’s face, I also want to throw up.

888-610-0995 tell them they suck

well why don’t you remove your 3rd party router piece of shit, the it will work

Downloading Linux, right. Not downloading illegal movies. Sure I’ll buy that.

TY ALOT> i will spread the word. wat kinda ofcompany changes where their customers are going on the internet>???

comcast is the shit people. they do not slow down your connection. it is impossible for them to do that. yeah they can go from like 12mb to like 8 or 10 but unless your downloading stuff you can’t tell. we get everything for free from them. best connection ever. dish?? directv?? if…. if you get a picture especially on cloudy days. they have over 400 channels. for what??? those channels are all garbage anyways. they make no sense. if you bitch to comcast they will credit your account. dickheads

Comcast sucks… Get FIOS if its available… 20down/20up speeds. No capping or “traffic shaping”. I dropped Comcrap for FiOS and havent been more happier. And its cheaper!

Which is worse? Wrong information or just being completely unfunny? This guy is still getting beaten up in high school.

No, it’s actually not. See shortie’s response. Wrong information sucks.

It is cheaper, if you get internet by itself. I paid $71/mo for Comcrap and $50/mo for Fios, which was better. I dont care what you say, screw Comcast.

Actually I will give Comcast one thing, they WERE reliable. I only had one outage with them in which I only needed to power cycle my modem for it to work again.

Comcast also reliably increases the volume on its commercials on cable to the point that the people livivg next door complain about their noisey neighbors.

I fuckin hate comcast. Can’t even play over half my games on Xbox live. Plus, I lose connection once in a while. >:(

Wow, what an overly ignorant post/comment. They have been FOUND to be guilty doing it – look it up. They CAN do it – all be it, it’s illegal for them to do, they CAN do it and they have. They have cut off peoples accounts for using “too much bandwidth” but NOWHERE have I see something describing what “too much bandwidth” is.
(Continued)

Best internet? Try FiOS, it’s quite a bit better from what I understand (I would try to get it, but my location is not wired for fiber currently).

.. What do we get for free? You mean, “I get everything for free because my PARENTS pay for it”?…

Lots of people get Linux distros off Bit Torrent because thats a good way to distribute them, especially when it’s multiple ISO files because its for CD and not DVD.

To assume Bit Torrent = Must be illegal is wrong.

I have had Bright house in Florida, and it was a freaking crapton better than Comcast.

We are stuck with comcast – None of the choices around here are as good as comcast (Which means they suck even more). If we had FiOS or Bright house, I would switch rather quickly.

damn u have a deep throat LOL can u fit my 11 inch there 2????? lol

Dexter, get back in your lab.

Comcast sucks. Our TV had the withdrawls for the longest time and the Internet was just…ugh…

Comcast is screwy in more than one way… Check it – watch?v=P3t51oWwL3I

I think it’s funny that anytime some moron loses his internet connectivity, it’s Comcast’s fault. 99% of the time, it’s a router losing sync and the modem is online and functioning perfectly. Basically, you’re an idiot.

Wow, do you live under a rock or what? This issue been all over the web. Its not just some modem losing connectivity.

Google is your friend…

Mine used to be waaaayyy faster!

We recognize that for “business” you have a lot of data going through, need static ips, have 24 hour instant support, etc. But for “Business” they don’t throttle it, but if it’s a personal account not a “business” account you don’t get the “business” benefits. If your gonna run a business and do something like that than pony up the dough and don’t complain about it. the residential accounts are meant for recreational personal use, not business use. There are different benefits and costs for each level of service. If you want premium service pay the premium price. And the level of throttling for personal accounts starts at about a Terabyte, if your passing through that much, chances are your doing something you probably shouldn’t and also taking bandwidth from other people as well, being a little greedy are we? Well that’s when we start to throttle you so it’s fair to everyone, not just those who want to be bandwidth hogs. As I said, you do have the option for that on a business account, and yes you can get that in your residence, if you want all that you gotta pay for it.

What Do You Think?
