Certifiable Certification
A Lockergnomie by the name of Vannon asked Leo:
I disagree with your evaluation of certifications. They matter. If you are not certified then you're a hack. You may be intelligent, talented and experienced but you're still a hack. Find that offensive? Then put it to the test – when your car breaks down take it to an uncertified, intelligent, talented and experienced person you know and have them fix it. Don't forget to pay them a professional rate. After all, you get paid. Right? We're not talking about one buddy helping out another. How about that hot water heater that's on the blink, the termites that are eating away the back porch or the storm windows you want installed? Do you want a “certified professional” to handle these issues? Your dry cleaner has a little certificate hanging on the wall. Your local bowling alley has certificates on the wall. Your family doctor, dentist, pharmacist and lawyer damn well better have something on the wall. Why? Because standards matter – that's why.
Experience is where the rubber meets the road. Nobody debates the value of experience. But, if I need a new team member I promise you the guy/gal with credentials will win out over the “experience only” guy/gal every time. As well they should. They have invested the blood, sweat and tears required to be something. That something is a certified professional.
I don't have a certification, but I am certifiable!
