Should You Get Windows Home Server?

alphaxion should have been a happy customer:

Do you have the same thought as I do when it comes to the windows home server product in that their fear of losing small business server sales has caused them to miss a big opportunity to bring about some very cool parental control or even just user control with simple active directory functions (restricted logon times, roaming profiles) and the sheer capacity that group policy has (it would have to be in a super user friendly mega wizardised interface tho) to restrict and limit a user in what they can do.
If they also did a cust down module of ISA that you could purchase and simply “plug in” to the server and provide a web proxy without needing massive amounts of knowledge, you could have a means for restricting and monitoring your kids browsing habits.

Instead none of this will make it into WHS and it’ll be nothing more than an overpriced password sync, file storage, backup and “network health monitoring” device.. of which the health monitoring section will prolly cause loads of confusion and/or just get ignored (which of course can still potentially happen to the points I raised).

I also tried to get my hands on an evaluation version of WHS to see what it was like but they were wanting to charge me to have it shipped my way (why they can’t offer it as a downloadable iso file like most other items I don’t know).

I used their feedback form to suggest to them that they should enable ISO download for this because I refuse to pay $10 for an evaluation version of software, regardless of if that is to cover shipping fees or not. I got an email back from them telling me that it wasn’t available outside of the US.. I then got a further email apologizing for the incorrect info given in the previous email and they proceeded to tell me “it’s not the software you’re paying for but the shipping”.. so they never bothered to listen to my “I don’t want to pay any money for any evaluation software, I would like to download it rather than waste time and resources on a physical version being shipped to me!

Utterly useless!

I’d be interested in knowing what your take on windows home server is and if you see it the way I do – why bother spending all that money on what is essentially a backup device (especially when online backup services offer greater protection at cheaper prices, tho from what I’ve read the backup procedure is pretty slick.. never underestimate a slick interface for getting users to do something like this) when it isn’t capable of a fraction of the potential it could have had.

Open Source Backup Program for Windows

Tim Malloroy:

Since I am lucky enough to have a server on my home network running Windows Sever 2003, I run DeltaCopy. It is rsync for Windows and will automatically backup to another PC or server using differential backups. It will even backup through rsync to a Linux box and can accept rsync backups from Linux. DeltaCopy will work on Microsoft Windows NT4, XP, 2000, 2003 and I have not had any issues on Vista at this point.

Solving Vista Problems Sometimes Creates More Problems

Bill Weber has been watching the YouTube videos for a while – and he felt compelled to write me about his experiences with Windows Vista:

Thanks for all the fun moments from the Help-a-Thons and providing YouTube fodder for years to come. Some moments are truly memorable, and I don’t just mean those where you are answering questions! *laughs* I’m glad you’re still continuing to help people with their technical issues.

While I’m on the subject, I wanted to comment on Windows Vista. Unfortunately, I bought a new computer instead of building my own, and it had Vista Home Premium installed. After using XP and giving Microsoft enough time (so I thought) to work out the kinks in the new OS, I thought I’d try it. Boy… is it fragile! When faced with a bad program installation or conflicting software issues, it just turned into “Vista Whack-a-Mole.” Solve one problem, three more crop up. I had the infamous “no network – server execution failed” error. This causes a red “X” over the network icon in the system tray, although connecting to the internet proceeds more-or-less normally. Apparently people have been experiencing this issue since February, and attibute it to AOL / AIM software. I use AOL proper, and had few problems with it in XP.

Another Inconvenient Truth?

The headline for this post was not written by me, but Scott Graham:

Windows Vista? What more can I say, I personally have had (in the past) a few speed-bumps along the way but not much to “rant” about. Friends and family on the other hand, not so good. Blue screen of death, “do you want to open this, do you want to do that?” it feels like Vista is a letdown and them problems seem to be dominating the consumer’s choice over whether or not to purchase the OS. Only a week before the release of Leopard (OS X) did I receive an email regarding a move from a Window’s power-user to Mac simply because of Windows Vista. Now of course with the release of Leopard I now couldn’t recommend a Mac more but should Windows power-users consider a move to Mac before looking at Windows alternatives?

DreamScene on Vista allows you to run a video as a wallpaper. Unfortunately, I can’t use it. Vista claims my monitors are too big. That’s ok, I’m not giving them up. I did, however, discover a very cool trick awhile back to run a screen saver behind my active windows.

Another Windows Vista Speed Tweak?

“TheDub” keeps coming up with suggestions for making Vista snappier. Far be it from me to keep his findings a secret.

I thought I would mention another thing. You will not believe me when I tell you that I have gotten Windows Vista performance similar if not the same or faster than Windows XP. Both on battery and off.

Optimizing Windows Vista Performance

My problem with recommending Windows Vista is that many of its features are considered bugs by a good portion of the community. Doesn’t that say it all? No, this isn’t Windows bashing – it’s the bare-faced truth. Here’s TheDub’s legitimate experience, as emailed to me earlier today:

Vista BSOD

Ya know, I’ve gotta be doing something wrong. Windows Vista can’t be this bad. Can it? Seriously, I’m not trying to pull punches when I point out radical design flaws and blatant usability oversights.

Make Windows Look Like OS X

The user known as “PC Perini” emailed me with a common story:

I’m a Windows user (for software compatibility, and the fact that I already have a Windows computer), but recently I’ve become… near obsessed with making it look and feel like a Mac OS. Now, I’ve gotten the dock, I use things like Picasa for iPhoto, Miranda for iChat, and N|vu for iWeb, but I was wondering if there are programs out there that emulate CoverFlow Windows. And, if so, where could I find those programs. Now, I’ve done a basic Google search, but didn’t find anything.
