One of the first pieces of hardware I ever remember lusting after was a cassette player. I was pretty young back then, and a cassette player was innovative! As I got a little older, making “mix tapes” for girls you liked was all the rage. I enjoyed being able to record things, and play them back. These days, we take audio and video recording for granted. Back then… it was really high tech stuff!

I still have several of my old cassettes. I want to start archiving those memories into MP3 format, so that I can save them. There’s a few different ways that you can accomplish this, using various pieces of hardware. The folks at ThinkGeeksent me something that will help me do this easily… the ION USB Cassette Deck. It works with either Windows or Mac OS X, and comes with its own software. I have to warn you, though. Even though the hardware is an excellent device, I don’t recommend using the software. It’s not so great.

It’s a dual cassette deck of sorts. You can dub from one deck to another. Or, I can use a USB connection and play it back on my computer… and record it from there if I wish. I recommend downloading the free version of Audacity in order to record and edit your audio files.

Pop open the cassette deck and throw your tape in. I still have the first cassette I ever purchased – Twisted Sister. Tell me you remember the song “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. It’s a classic that’s still played often today! Hey… I loved them back in the day. What’s wrong with liking the song now?!

The ION features LED Audio Level Indicators to let you know when it detects music on one side or the other. The “A” deck is for cassette playback only. The “B” deck can be used to play and record. Copy your music from one cassette to another at regular OR high-speed. There are several nifty little add-ons for all of you cassette junkies!

I do like this gadget, and will be using it quite a bit. I am having a great time going down memory lane and putting faces, names and memories with each song on the tapes.

I am able to change the music I’m listening to throughout my house by controlling it from one small little tool! This is one of the best things I’ve used in quite awhile, for sure. The Sonos Controller gives you instant access to all your music and all the rooms in your house, with just the touch of a finger… even from my iPhone!

Turn off what’s playing downstairs while you’re still upstairs, or change the song playing in your bedroom while you’re in the living room. You don’t have to aim the remote at anything in particular, since it’s all wireless… and works seemingly like magic! Play the same song in every room of your house – or different things in different rooms, depending on what everyone wants to hear.

The best part of all is the many different ways you can listen to music with Sonos. Listen to the music collection on your computer, or a free Internet radio station. Or better yet – subscribe to a music service (I use Rhapsody), and listen to that. The possibilites are nearly endless.

These are simple to use out of the box – you don’t have to be a gadget genius to figure it out! There’s really no reason I can think of that you wouldn’t want one of these.

Pixie might think she’s fooling me, but I always see her sitting in my chair. However, I had to make her move since I needed to record this video talking about the uCorder. It’s possibly the World’s smallest recorder, but don’t let the size fool you. It’s an excellent little device, and one I am sure you will be happy to have. What would you use it for if you owned one of these?

The uCorder allows you the convenience of Wearable Video Recording plus the benefit of a Webcam. While I was in Hawaii last week, I had the opportunity to record a “Question of the Day” video with Traci Toguchi. I decided to ask the question: What is your favorite piece of technology?.

Traci stated that there’s no way she could live without her cell phone. Not only is it used for calls, she also relies on it heavily to be able to check her emails and take care of her various online duties while she’s on the go. Today’s technology trend is pushing ever closer to being “all” mobile. We are busy, and we need our gadgets and gizmos to help keep us connected while we’re running around.

My answer was simply the Internet. The Internet has changed my life, and that of many others. We can do anything there, from research to connecting with people. I’ve been online since 1992, which is quite awhile now I know.

The world of the Internet has exploded since I’ve been online. In the future, it will become even faster and easier to access. It will also be more ubiquitous. It’s evolutionary, and there isn’t a question as to whether the Internet will continue to “be there” in the future. It’s going to be a huge part of our daily lives in years and decades to come.

How do you keep things safe when you are traveling? I’m sure you make use of the safe in the hotel room. However, things like your laptop just won’t fit inside there. You can pick up a cheap alarm for around ten dollars at any supermarket or convenience store. Let me tell you – these things are LOUD.

This little gadget I picked up only cost me a few bucks, and it’s awesome. It has these two flat little metal prongs. You just stick them underneath whatever it is you want kept secure. When someone lifts that item up – all hell breaks loose! Your ears will bleed from the loud chirping sound!

There’s really no excuse for not having something like this with you when you’re on the go. Isn’t a few bucks more than worth your sanity and peace of mind?

If you didn’t already realize it, Gnomedex.com is currently promoting our next conference – coming up next month (August 20th – 22nd, 2009). One of the presenters is Bre Pettis, who is a “maker” extraordinaire. For the second time in the past couple of weeks, I’ve had someone from the community email me to let me know about Bre’s MakerBot.com – without knowing that (a) I know Bre, and (b) Bre is speaking at Gnomedex. Still, Christopher Benjamins explained Bre’s project to me…

Hello Chris! I’m not really in the chat, but I’ve seen a lot of your videos. I’ve been getting interested in 3D printers and stumbled on an old video you made back in 2007 talking about them. You mentioned that you read in a magazine I think that someone was trying to make one out of cheap stuff, well – he did. I wasn’t sure if you kept an eye on it or not or forgot about it.

I’m sure you know that the commercially-produced 3D printers are expensive; they now range from $20,000 to $500,000. I was lucky and got to play with one back when I took an CAD Engineering class in high school (I made a cool little spaceship in 3D). Recently, I found the MakerBot and the RepRap 3D printers. They are very cheap compared to the other ones. I’ve been thinking about getting a MakerBot, and then using that to make a RepRap. The interesting thing though about them is that they are open source projects. You can get the designs for them and built them completely by yourself. Or, you can get kits. Another interesting thing (specifically, the RepRap) is that 60% of the parts can be made by another 3D printer (it doesn’t have to be RepRap or MakerBot). They are self-replicating machines. The RepRap project is working on improving that ratio, and also allowing someone to print in more than just plastic. I think they have a solder and a plaster extruder?

3D printing is more than just prototyping now. Their dream is in the future instead of buying something online and having it shipped to you, you would download it, and print it yourself – like a mini personal factory.

Both of these projects work together to improve their designs. Actually, the founder of RepRap helped jumpstart and support MakerBot – both are different in a way. MakerBot is made from cheap stuff that anyone can find and build. RepRap is designed to self-replicate, but the downside of that if you don’t have a friend or some other resource who can give you those special parts (the ones that a machine would make), it’s difficult to make one. So people usually make one, to produce a RepRap, or make a temporary machine using the same motors and circuits to make the parts for it.

I’ve had the Kodak Zi6 pocket video recorder for awhile, and have even posted a review of it. I like it fairly well, so I was excited to test out the new Zx1 when Kodak sent it to me for review. Not only was I ready for even better quality, I was stoked to find out that it is considered to be “weather-proof”. Since I was heading out to Kayak this weekend, I figured it would be the perfect camera to take along.

The main thing that bothered me about the Zi6 was the fact that it dropped frames quite often. It was a good camera otherwise, but frame dropping is just a big no-no in my book. I wanted to give this Zx1 a fair shake.

The Zx1 records 720p at 60 fps with 16:9 aspect ratio. The rubberized doors protect all ports from rain, snow, sand and more. The view screen is 2 inches, and there are cables included to allow you to watch footage on your HDTV. You can also easily upload recorded footage to YouTube with the built-in USB and software.

We’ll see this weekend how well the Zx1 stands up in an outdoor setting. If you have a Zx1, feel free to leave me a follow-up comment or video. Let me know what you like and don’t like about this particular camera. I’ll be sure to post more at a later date on my experiences.

The object in my hand, my iPhone, has length, width and height like most objects in this Universe. I know the dimensions of it, even. The problem is that sometimes it’s kind of hard to picture. You have no idea how the gadget will fit in your purse or pocket. You can’t get a good mental image of how big or small it is in “real” life, once it gets to you!

It never fails. We see the dimensions on the screen when we’re shopping online. But then when the item arrives in our home, we decide it’s either too big or too small! How do we avoid this issue? It’s simple! Check out Pective. It will display the actual size of any item – right on your monitor! All you have to do is specify your monitor size, and Pective will display the image life-size !

Once you’ve set your screen dimensions, just browse (or search) around on the site for whatever item you’re interested in. When you click the thumbnail of the object, it will open as a life-sized picture right on your monitor! This way, you can compare it to something you currently have on hand, such as with my iPhone. I checked out a Palm… and held my iPhone right up to my monitor. The Palm is a tad smaller! Who knew?!
