I noticed around the web that we have three community members celebrating birthdays today! Traci Toguchi, Frank Eliason and Drew Olanoff will all be blowing out candles today. Now, normally I’d say a simple “Happy Birthday!” and be done with it. However, realizing today is Drew’s birthday gave me pause, and made me think…

Six months ago, Drew completely sure what his future held. He was diagnosed with cancer back in May, and the fight began. He finished up his last Chemo treatment a week ago, and the doctors have given him the awesome news that his tumors are gone. He is free of that stupid disease, hopefully forever. He continues his fight against Cancer, with the support of many thousands of people… including Drew Carey. In order to help raise money for the Livestrong foundation, all you have to do is click that little “Follow” button on Drew Carey’s Twitter page. For every follower – up to one million – that Drew gets prior to midnight on New Year’s Eve, he will donate one more dollar. How cool is that?

Thinking about all of this, and Drew O’s birthday, kind of puts life into perspective a little, eh? It makes one remember to stop and be thankful for what we have… right here, right now. It makes us want to push ourselves a little harder to do the things we promised ourselves we would do. It makes us want to reach out and tell those we care about that we do, in fact, love them.

Cancer touches everyone. EVERYONE. In some way or another, your life will be affected by Cancer at some point. Even though Drew’s personal fight may have come to an end, the war has only begun. Keep doing your part in kicking Cancer’s ass, everyone. We won’t rest until we eradicate it for good.

Birthdays aren’t the only thing going on in our community today, as you know. All of you are busy posting and writing, sharing your thoughts and dreams. This goal of spreading benefits led to an interest in new varieties of intellectual property including open source software, a term she is credited with originating.

More recently, having noticed that — as some crudely put it — “aging sucks”, she works to further life extension, especially within the tech community.

She serves on the Advisory Board of the International Council on Nanotechnologyand the Editorial Advisory Board of NASA’s Nanotech Briefs, and served on California’s Blue Ribbon Task Forceon Nanotechnology.

Firas Khatib is a postdoctoral researcher in David Baker’s Laboratory in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Washington. He is currently trying to cure cancer by getting people to play online video games, specifically Foldit, but has yet to break the news to his grandmother who would not approve. Firas received his PhD in Bioinformatics from UC Santa Cruz in 2008 where he gave the graduate commencement speechfor the school of engineering; luckily they still gave him his degree.

The University of Washington are investigating whether the brainpower of humans worldwide can be brought to bear on critical problems posed in computational biology. The long term goal of this project is to utilize the combined power of humans and computers in order to build accurate models of disease-related proteins by introducing a new approach: distributed computing driven by human intuition.

The problem of accurate prediction of protein structures remains one of the most important unsolved dilemmas in biology. Determining the correct structure of a protein helps researchers successfully target them with drugs. Currently, experimental methods for solving protein structures result in accurate, high-resolution solutions, but cannot keep pace with the quantity of information. Developing new computational techniques to produce experimental-quality models is one of the most important problems in computational structural biology.

While progress in high-resolution protein structure prediction is being made, particularly here in David Baker’s research group using our Rosetta prediction algorithm, consistent computerized production of models with atomic level resolution are still out of reach. Even with the current supercomputing and distributed computing power available, the protein structure prediction field is still years away from being able to predict the 3D structure of any protein whose genome has been solved. A novel approach to this problem is the use of human puzzle-solving intuition and pattern recognition skills in conjunction with computers running the Rosetta algorithm.

Foldit is an interactive Rosetta-based program that was recently developed by the Baker Lab and University of Washington’s department of Computer Science and Engineering. This program allows users around the world to directly manipulate protein structure models on their home computers in real-time using Rosetta’s energy function. The ultimate goal of Foldit is to use results from the computer program to improve protein structure prediction algorithms by capitalizing on human 3D problem-solving skills. Human users can recognize that certain moves they make might temporarily result in a worse Rosetta energy score, but lead to a better overall energy score. Humans have the advantage of awareness that often the only way to get to the correct low energy state is to go through many high energy conformations. Foldit users are also able to share their solutions with others around the world, taking advantage of the strengths that different people have.

The more knowledge we have on how proteins fold, the better equipped we will be in the fight against protein-related diseases, such as cancer and HIV. Foldit can contribute to this global fight by giving worldwide participants an immediate and relevant application for scientific knowledge, and hopefully reinforcing motivation to understand the underlying science.

My friend Imei is a great cook, whether it be Asian food, or “American” food. I happen to like Tofu if it is cooked properly, so we decided to show you how to make it – and make it taste good!

We are using Silken Tofu. Don’t ask me why it’s called that. Maybe it’s silky smooth (said in my best Zohan voice)!? We pulled the Tofu out of the box, and sliced it up like spam, into cubes. Imei prefers to cook it in a Wok that has been seasoned, but I don’t have anything like that! What’s a Geek to do?!

We had some Guy Lan, which is basically akin to American Broccoli, just without the little tree parts. You can find it in any Asian food market. You can eat the stalks, but I’m not so sure I want to. We chopped down the Guy Lan, to add it to our food. And, of course, we have my favorite Shiitake mushrooms.

If you have garlic cloves, you can heat them in your skillet with the oil, and stir them around a bit. Then, add the Tofu. The cool thing about making any type of stir fry is that you can just throw everything in together. You don’t have to cook things separately.

Next, we threw in the Guy Lan. It looked like a heck of a lot of it, but Imei told me that it’s not. Apparently, it shrinks up while cooking like spinach does. We also added some black bean sauce that has garlic in it. It’s free of MSG, so that’s a good thing!

I wanted some hot sauce. I can’t help it – I like it that way! Imei accomodated me, and squirted a little in the stir fry so that it would have a bit of a kick. For the leftover Tofu, I guess I can heat it up with some Soy Sauce, and chop up some onions on top! Or, I guess I could put them into my soup.

Since I do like Tofu, and it’s healthy… drop me an email with your best Tofu recipes. I’ll definitely try them out.

On a recent trip to Fatburger, I became involved in a burger eating contest. I thought “hey, no sweat! I can pack away a burger pretty fast”. This, of course, was before they brought out the WTF Burger. When I took a look at what I was supposed to eat, I indeed thought WTF!!! This thing isn’t a burger, it’s a monster. It is, however, delicious. I’m happy to report that I managed to eat about half of this sucker… even though it’s pretty much the size of my head.

By getting out and participating in more physical activities, I’m also learning to relax my mind, and de-stress myself. It’s working, too… I have renewed energy and enthusiasm!

How do you relax? What’s your little secrets and tricks that you use in order to try to keep some semblance of order and peace in your mind? One thing I have always done, as you know, is to read up on what is going on in our community. I learn things, I laugh at things, and I even at times empathize with things.

One of the cool things my friend Imei does is to teach Yoga. She often works with people in corporate environments, to help them learn how to be more productive due to learning how to relax. Isn’t that an interesting concept for a Geek? That whole relaxing thing kind of worried me a bit at first. I have to admit, I feel more comfortable in my own body now. I feel as though I’m getting more oxygen… and that little spot between my shoulder blades no longer hurts due to having bad posture.

By simply learning to breathe better, and relax each muscle of my body, I now truly feel like a million bucks. I know I slouch in my office chair. Don’t lie – I know you do, too! Most of us have bad posture. Since we spend so many hours a day hunched over our computers, it’s no wonder that we’re always in pain, and rubbing kinks out of our necks!

If I were you, I’d take a yoga class or two. It will only help you, and no… it does not make you look unmanly! I feel better. I’m breathing better. I AM better.

My entire life, I’ve dealt with being stuffed up. I’ve always had problems with my ears, nose and throat. When I started stuffing up recently, I decided to take a new and drastic approach. I wanted to try something I had seen on YouTube, that supposedly really works… a Neti Pot. It looks weird and awkward, yes. But apparently, it works! My friend Imei came over to watch and laugh, and to hold the camera for me.

You know, this is touted as a miracle cure of sorts. It unclogs your sinus region, allowing you to be able to breathe freely. This saves you from needing to take medications, use nasal sprays, or walk around miserable. Hey, if I can breathe again, then I’m all for it!

Of course, I bought the proper type of salt that is made for the Neti Pot. You do NOT use regular table salt. Good lord, can you imagine?! Ewww. That would burn! I also have some Sesame Oil to lubricate the nasal passages, warm water, Kleenex to blow out the excess gunk. You’re supposed to use a full pot for each nostril, but I decided to take it a little easy my first time out.

It was very strange, for sure. I couldn’t help but laugh through it. However, I have to admit it… it works. I feel much less congested than when I started. It’s possible that I need to redo it, and I plan to. The Sesame Seed oil didn’t burn or smell bad. It apparently will keep my nose from drying out too much.

I recommend that you think about trying this if you have problems with your sinuses like I do.

My entire life, I’ve dealt with being stuffed up. I’ve always had problems with my ears, nose and throat. When I started stuffing up recently, I decided to take a new and drastic approach. I wanted to try something I had seen on YouTube, that supposedly really works… a Neti Pot. It looks weird and awkward, yes. But apparently, it works! My friend Imei came over to watch and laugh, and to hold the camera for me.

You know, this is touted as a miracle cure of sorts. It unclogs your sinus region, allowing you to be able to breathe freely. This saves you from needing to take medications, use nasal sprays, or walk around miserable. Hey, if I can breathe again, then I’m all for it!

Of course, I bought the proper type of salt that is made for the Neti Pot. You do NOT use regular table salt. Good lord, can you imagine?! Ewww. That would burn! I also have some Sesame Oil to lubricate the nasal passages, warm water, Kleenex to blow out the excess gunk. You’re supposed to use a full pot for each nostril, but I decided to take it a little easy my first time out.

It was very strange, for sure. I couldn’t help but laugh through it. However, I have to admit it… it works. I feel much less congested than when I started. It’s possible that I need to redo it, and I plan to. The Sesame Seed oil didn’t burn or smell bad. It apparently will keep my nose from drying out too much.

I recommend that you think about trying this if you have problems with your sinuses like I do.

Cory Carrier was better known on our IRC community as simply Gimpi. On Twitter, his chosen handle was Krippl. Are you noticing a theme yet? Corey was indeed physically crippled, living much of his life in a wheelchair. He also had to be placed on a ventilator much of the time, due to reduced lung functions. Cory lived with a very VERY rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. He refused to let MD define him. He refused to live his life in fear of what might happen. Instead, he chose to LIVE life – on his own terms.

We lost our friend Cory unexpectedly last night. It is a crushing blow to this community as a whole, and to me personally. You see, Gimpi was part of our chat community long before we even WERE a community. The kid wandered in so many years ago, I’ve lost count. I know it’s been 8 or 9 years at the least, and likely even longer than that. He was to turn 22 in December, so that tells you how young he was when he first came to us.

Cory had such a zest for life, and an amazing sense of humor. His ability to laugh in the face of his disabilities actually inspired many people. So often, people in situations such as he was just shrivel up and stop living. They let the disease become them. They give up, and live out their lives quietly. Not Cory. He pushed himself every day. He laughed often, and laughed loud. He was smart as hell, and an amazing graphics designer. He also was very loyal, and was fierce in his protection of his friends and loved ones.

How do you take the life of someone like Cory and sum it up into a simple blog post? I’ve slaved over this all damn day, and haven’t figured it out yet. All I know is that there is a huge hole in my heart tonight, as there is in that of everyone who was close to this awesome little dude. He touched so many lives, and was loved by all of us. There are literally no words for me to write to begin to explain who Cory was, what he stood for, and what he meant to us all.

I will simply say that this community will not be the same without our Gimpi. We will forever think of him fondly, and miss him greatly. And when we think back on all the years he was with us, we’ll remember him with laughter – along with the tears.

You are in our hearts, Cory/Gimpi/Krippl. And to your family and “real life” friends… may they know that they are in our hearts right now, as well, as they begin to learn to cope with their loss. If there is anything that our community can do, I hope you all know that we are on it – instantly. That’s the way Cory was, always reaching out to help. And that’s the least we can do now, in his honor.

Fly free, my friend. Fly free from the physical pain and constraints. Look upon us occasionally, and remind us to laugh every day.

A calendar with firefighters in it tends to be quite hot… literally! Firefighters work very hard, and risk their lives every day. Silver Joa sent in ten fire safety tips to share with all of us. This is a very prudent video for you to watch. You’re surrounded by electronics and other fire hazards every day, so it’s a good idea to keep safety in mind at all times.

Top 5 Fire Prevention Tips

  • Use Modern Wiring. – If your wiring isn’t up-to-date, you can short-circuit it by using newer equipment and/or heavy loads. This can (and will!) cause the wiring to burn out and cause a fire.
  • Put out Cooking Fires Properly. – Don’t throw water on burning oil! Use baking soda, flour, or a fire blanket. Throwing water onto burning oil will cause it to explode, likely burning you severely.
  • Don’t Smoke in the House! – If you must smoke, do so outdoors. Make sure you extinguish your matches/lighters/cigarettes fully and properly, and discard them in a fireproof container.
  • Don’t Use Old Electronics. – If you have old toasters and the like, make sure that they are working properly. Check the cords for fraying, and throw them out when they start to do this.
  • Use Fire Resistant Building Materials. – This is self-explanatory. If you build a home or shed/garage, use as many fire-resistant materials as you possibly can, to reduce your risk of fire damage in the future.

Top 5 Ways to Deal with Fire

  • Have a Smoke Detector! – Make sure your home has plenty of working smoke detectors. These can literally be a lifesaver, and mean the difference between serious injury and escaping in time. Also, it can alert you to a problem much faster than if you smell/feel the flames, possibly causing you to get help soon enough to save your home and possessions.
  • Fire Blankets and Extinguishers. – Make sure you have these on hand, to help put out small fires whenever possible. Make sure your extinguishers are regularly tested by the fire department, as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Get Out When You Should. – If a fire is already too large for you to be able to safely put out.. then GET OUT. Have escape routes planned out (and even practiced) with your family. Teach children to test doorknobs prior to leaving a room when a house is burning.
  • How to Manage Smoke. – If you are leaving a burning building and there is a lot of smoke in the air, get on the ground. Crawling on your knees – or slithering on your belly – is much better, and a good way to prevent as much smoke inhalation as possible.
  • Don’t be a Hero. – Don’t jump off of a multi-story building – you’ll end up risking your life. Instead, wait for help, and follow basic safety rules. Also, don’t run inside a burning building thinking you will save someone or some THING. Let the people who are trained in these matters take control.

BONUS: Never, EVER remove your smoke detector batteries because they “annoy” you. You never know when that annoyance will save the life of someone you love – or your own.

The Medifast Plan – Does Medifast Work?

If you’ve been thinking about using Medifast for your diet, you probably have one very important question: Does Medifast work?

I can tell you that it does work, but since I’m pretty sure you want to hear more than that, let’s take a look at the Medifast diet plan and hopefully I can answer not only the question, “Does Medifast work?” but also, “why” it works.

What is the Medifast Plan?

Medifast is essentially a very low calorie meal replacement program. The Medifast foods come in the form of shakes, bars, soups and other items and they are the mainstay of the program. The meal replacement items are designed to meet all of your nutritional requirements.

In addition to the packaged foods, you’ll also eat one lean & green meal that you prepare for yourself each day, made up for protein and vegetables; for example, roast chicken and big salad.

Why does Medifast work?

I think one of the big reasons that Medifast works is that in addition to the program being quite low calorie (around 1000 calories a day), it also tends to be low carb as well. By eliminating many of the carbs we usually eat, Medifast helps reduce the constant cravings for more food. Most Medifast dieters find that after the first 3-4 days, they no longer feel hungry all the time so the temptation to cheat isn’t always getting in the way.

The other reason that I think the program works is that it eliminates a lot of the mealtime planning. In all likelihood, you could probably loose a similar amount of weight following a plan like Atkins or the South Beach diet, but both of those diet plans will involve a lot more time dedicated to planning your meals, and thus, thinking about food constantly. But with Medifast, you only really have to think about one meal per day.

Eventually you’ll have to start thinking about food again someday — when you’ve lost your weight and need to plan how you’re going to keep that weight gone. But I think there’s a lot to be said for not having to worry so much about every meal while you are actively dieting. It can help break that cycle, particularly if you get a bit obsessive about food.

So I think if you’re looking for a solid diet plan, especially if you have a significant amount of weight to lose, then Medifast is worthy of your consideration. Medifast does work, especially if you follow the plan. And with the variety of foods that they offer, it’s really not a difficult plan to follow either.

    Drew Olanoff has cancer – but cancer doesn’t have him.

    Drew is fighting against his Hodgkin’s Disease the only way he knows how… by being social. He talks long and loud about this horrible disease, via every social medium he can get his hands on. And – it’s working. Drew and his team are raising awareness (and money for cancer research) to new levels every day.

    Even before he was officially diagnosed, Drew started blaming things like losing his car keys on his cancer. He called up his friend Mike, and said “hey – we should start a website”. Little did Drew know what his idea would turn into.

    As of the writing of this post, BlameDrewsCancer has had 12,379 people blame 29,265 things on Drew’s cancer via a Twitter hash tag. Even people like Lance Armstrong and Jon Bon Jovi have blamed something on his cancer. But why are they doing all of this blaming?

    By blaming cancer for anything and everything, Drew is hoping to galvanize people into taking action, and helping to kick cancer’s ass once and for all. He encourages people to talk about the disease. It’s not something to be ashamed of, nor is it a dirty word. Cancer is a fact of life, one that touches nearly everyone in some way at some point in their lives.

    Drew and his team of blamers entered into a partnership with the LiveStrong people. Together, they are working hard to help eradicate cancer for good.

    Drew is fun and funny. He’s energetic and silly. He’s serious and sweet. He’s a friend to everyone, and someone who will not sit down and let cancer take over his life. He’s out there, in the face of cancer every day, doing everything he can to kick it to the curb. He’s appeared on countless radio and television shows, as well as appeared in a bajillion print articles. He even jumped out of a plane! In a word – Drew is awesome. The entire Lockergnome/Pirillo/Gnomedex community is behind him 10000000%, with our collective thoughts, prayers, wishes and love.

    I urge you to do your part. Even if you cannot donate money to this amazing and worthy cause, don’t think you can do nothing. Send out tweets blaming Drew’s cancer for things. Email your friends and family, asking them to do the same. Volunteer at a local cancer center. Hook up with your local Hospice organization to see what they may need. Don’t just sit there, thinking others are going to find the cure. Only YOU can help make it happen.

    I smell like myself, since I don’t really use any type of fragrance, other than my deodorant. I usually use chapstick, which may smell like cherries or mints. I have not purchased any kind of cologne over the past several years – since college! I never thought I could find a scent that was Geeky enough, so I stopped trying. I was happy when my friends at ThinkGeek gave me a chance to check out their newest scent… Red Shirt.

    Bright, clean and direct with top notes of green mandarin, bergamot and a hint of lavender (your hope), finishing with base notes of leather and grey musk (your smoldering shoes after you’ve been vaporized). Smell like the future, because tomorrow may never come.

    It’s strong, for sure. But it’s very Trekkie smelling. I kept sniffing and sniffing the bottle, because I like it. You know you want to wear it… I will be! If you really want to impress the ladies, you’re going to be ordering some today.

    It’s strong, for sure. But it’s very Trekkie smelling. I kept sniffing and sniffing the bottle, because I like it. You know you want to wear it… I will be! If you really want to impress the ladies, you’re going to be ordering some today.

    So I was told that while in Honolulu, I had to eat a traditional “Local Breakfast” at the McDonald’s. Ok, so let’s do this. I can handle it, right? It won’t kill me, right?

    The “Local Breakfast” includes white rice, eggs, Portuguese sausage, and Spam. You read the correctly – Spam. Honest-to-goodness… SPAM. What the heck. When in Rome…

    The Spam actually tasted good, as did the rice. It is very Hawaiian tasting, with maybe a hint of Connecticut thrown in. The Portuguese sausage, well, I’m not so sure. At least now I know what it tastes like.

    Thankfully, they had the normal old fruit punch to wash it all down with. I thought maybe it would taste better in Hawaii, but it’s just the same old punch as I get here in Seattle.
