Geek Eye for the Sloppy Guy – a Beginning

I think my new idea is catching on rather well. “Geek Eye for the Sloppy Guy”. I can’t help but love that title for the series I’m doing – beauty tips for guys! Who knows – maybe it will turn into a television show someday! Ok, ok – maybe not. But hey… anything can happen! Have you seen the latest additions to the series?

I’ve been busy doing other things, as well. Don’t worry – I’m still a techie at heart! Just because I tend to take pride in how well-groomed I am doesn’t mean I’m not still a complete Geek! I love to read about anything and everything, especially things that all of you from the community put out there. I spend hours a day just checking out what’s what, who’s where, and why wonders never cease! Are you reading what your peers are doing?

How to Sing Karaoke Online for Free

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Who doesn’t like to sing? Even if you can’t “sing” really well, you still probably like to. I sing in the shower, in the car, and even on my live stream. Heck, people have recorded me singing in the past, and uploaded it all over YouTube. Oh, the joys of live streaming!

If you enjoy belting out songs, you will probably become addicted to the new online Karaoke site! Karaoke Party is a free service where you can practice from your own home, and “compete” against others. Sing karaoke online in your web browser. Practice your singing and increase your score. Challenge your friends in becoming the next karaoke champion. All you need is a microphone and a web browser that connects to the ‘Net!

Just a few minutes before recording this video, I recorded my own Karaoke version of the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. I know nothing about music, and I can’t really sing. I’m sure you’ll cringe when you hear it, but that’s ok. I just love to sing along though!

You don’t need a Karaoke machine, nor any other fancy equipment. All you need is yourself, an Internet connection, and your microphone. Send everyone outside so they can’t hear you, and cut loose. Show the next American Idol that is inside of you!

Community Challenge: Green Screen Me!

Here’s your chance to do something with me! I recorded this while sitting in front of a green screen. “Chroma Keying” is a technique for mixing two images or frames together, in which a color from one image is removed, revealing another image behind it. It is commonly used for weather forecasts on the news. The weatherperson looks like they are standing in front of a large map. In the studio, it’s actually just a large blue or green background. The different weather maps are added to the screen using software.

You might already have the software installed (and yes, the new version of iMovie does an amazing job with chroma key / green screen shots).

So, here’s your chance! Decide what it is I was trying to say! Have fun, be creative, and make sure you show us what you come up with. Leave a comment here with the link to your creation, or upload it to your Geeks account.

Holophonic Sounds

Put on your headphones and check out these MP3s:

Chris, Scott Lencl here (scolen3 to the chat room). I came across some pretty amazing technology I thought you would like to see, or listen to in this case. Its called holophonics, a type or binaural audio recording. Basically, two microphones placed on a dummy humans head, and recorded on two separate channels. The sound is enhanced is some special software that gives the illusion of sound in 3D space, most notably the up and down axis, though your brain does most of the work. It only works if you wear headphones, and make sure you have a good amount of volume to give it a more realistic effect.

Here is my favorite link for this: Get Your Virtual Haircut (and Other Auditory Illusions)

My favorites are the virtual haircut, by far – and the holophonic match box. If you have not yet head this before, prepare to be amazed.

Whoa! That’s trippy!

How to Make Money Playing World of Warcraft: WoW!

One of the live callers the other night is a professional World of Warcraft player. He and his team travel around the country playing in tournaments. In just one that they won first place, each team member won $5000.00!! I’m serious – five grand for winning a WoW tournament!

Since the team has no official name and are playing again at the upcoming BlizzCon, they wanted to know if they could name themselves after our Geeks site! Heck yeah they can!! Apparently the tournament will be broadcast live, with thousands of people watching.

Speaking of Geeks and WoW… we do have a group especially for WoW players and fanatics! There are 280 members of it at this point in time, and quite a lot of discussion, tips and tricks being shared in there. Be sure to stop by there if you’re a WoW player!

Good luck to you guys at Blizzcon. Sadly, I won’t be able to actually watch the tournament live, as it’s the same weekend as my Gnomedex convention. However, we’ll be pulling for you guys!

Red and White Darth Vader Figures

Red and White Darth Vader Figures

I’ve been collecting Darth Vader merchandise for the past few years, and I stumbled upon a white Darth Vader this afternoon. This Vader was a part of the “Infinities” comic book series which illuminated alternate realities for the original trilogy. The red Darth Vader is a Holiday figure. I’m not sure if there are any other Vader figure colors out there – but if you know of one, please let me know.

Can I Has Cheezeburger?

I put Wicket in my office chair, and had everyone in the live chat take screen grabs of him. I wanted them to make LOLDogs out of his picture, and share them with the World. I did this to promote the new book “I Can Has Cheezeburger?“.

Iz a portable collekshun of pix, wif 5 grammar lessons from Professor Happycat! 200!!! PIX! Some favorites, many new and never seen pix personally chosen out of bajillions by cheez and tofu. Use it to confuse grandma and give you lols and make your day infinity times better!

I had to blockquote that since it explains it so perfectly. If you’ve ever been to the site itself, you know you’re hooked. Admit it – you love the LOLCats! We all do. They’re just plain funny. If you were a part of our community last fall during Gnomedex, you know that Ben Huh was one of our speakers. We had a great time learning how the site began – and laughing hysterically at all of the pictures he brought!

If you love the LOLCats (or dogs!) you definitely have to grab this book. You’ll laugh yourself silly every time you pick it up.

Where Were You at 1234567890 (UNIX Epoch Clock Time)?

Epoch time started January 1, 1970. According to the Epoch clock, we hit 1234567890 today! Now you will be able to say where you were when that time passed! I swear it, gumdrops were falling from the sky in Seattle, and yes – I really did chair dance!

Unix time is a system for describing points in time, defined as the number of seconds elapsed since midnight Coordinated Universal Time of January 1, 1970, not counting leap seconds. On February 13, 2009 at exactly 23:31:30 (UTC), Unix time was equal to ‘1234567890’. Parties and other celebrations were held around the world, among various technical subcultures, to celebrate 1234567890 day.

So, where were you when it hit 123456789?? What were you doing? I’m sure this is a moment in time that us Geeks will never forget! I know Wicket won’t!
