Subject: coupon for HV30?

Hi Chris I watched your show on the HV30 I want to buy one and I was taking you up on your offer to give out a code. Do you have one? I plan on buying at Buydig or wherever the code might work..

Thanks, GlowofElectrum

Tips for Buying a Camcorder

  • What recording format is best for you? The type of recording you choose depends on how much money you can safely spend for memory devices, as well as how long of a recording time you’ll need.
  • Consider the weight and size. While you’re actually in the store, pick up and hold different ones to make sure they fit in your hand and you can easily hold them. Make sure all of the buttons and levers are positioned where you can reach them easily, without having to stop recording to look for them.
  • Keep lights in mind! You will use your camcorder inside a lot of the time. You can take videos without much light, but remember that your quality isn’t going to be as good. There are several camcorders that work well with low lighting conditions. Look for one of these if you know you’ll shoot indoors a lot.
  • Features play a huge part. If you’re a beginner, make sure your device has an “auto” setting. You want to be able to turn it on, click the record button, and go. Once you become more comfortable with your camcorder, you can begin to play around with different settings.
  • What type of storage format does it require? As I mentioned in the first point, the memory will play a large part in your decision. There are five different types of memory storage devices for camcorders:
    • MiniDV
    • DVD Disc
    • hard drive or flash-based
    • Digital8
    • MicroMV

You will need to choose the one that fits your needs, budget and lifestyle.

Got a bunch of deal requests for the HV30. Best deal at a reputable store (i.e. no reputation for bait & switch or gray market sales) is at B&H Photo.

Chris! I trust your site for advice and suggestions in all things tech but just realized that you also have sponsored links to well-known fraudulent bait and switch companies!

How could you, Chris? This absolutely breaks my heart to see that you’re inadvertently picking up small ad revenue streams from companies who are currently under investigation by the state of New York for fraud. I love your site and have followed you since the days of TechTV. This is such a bummer to see. I know you don’t have control over which ads Google plunks through but my advice is to stop incorporating Google ads on your site. I read your article on the Canon HV30, liked it and thought about buying one myself. That’s when I noticed the sponsored links to the fraudulent sellers. You have to realize there are lots of people who might click on a link for a great deal for one of these camcorders and wind up getting ripped off from one of these companies. After all, we come to your site because we trust you, we trust your opinion and you make us feel safe about our tech purchases. It stands to reason then, that we’d also trust sponsored links on your site because you’re the type of guy (or at least I thought you were) who wouldn’t stand for making a few $$ from internet click-through advertising if it meant people were actually going to be defrauded from these companies. This is my last visit to your site unfortunately. I’m a big fan of yours but this just bummed me out beyond belief.

For those of you who waded through this novella of a complaint always do a quick search via Yelp before making a tech purchase. Google searches for purchases just can’t be trusted.
