Cancel Napster

Hey, Napster? Thanks for making it an absolute pain in the ass to cancel our account - yet another reason to abandon your service. I had to call a phone number to tell you that I wanted to quit. Why?

  • MTV’s new URGE service is far less problematic. Far less.
  • I really like the Clix, and URGE works better with it.
  • Napster’s software continues to suck.
  • You made me call a number to cancel service. I hate that. Really.
  • URGE is the future, Napster is still living in the past.

Windows Media Player 1l… is still far from impressive. Don’t swallow the hype when you see it, please? WMP11 is better than WMP10 - but “less crappy” is not an honorable benchmark. They continue to ignore user interface inconsistencies and feedback from Windows Media’s most ardent supporters - including MVPs, who were seemingly marginalized during 11’s development process.

Come on, no one buys music, if I want to buy it i’ll buy the full audio quality CD but only if the band is amazing, if they suck or if I don’t want to spend money thepiratebay.org and the limewire p2p network are all I need.

to make it easy for people to cancel their account with an online service. He backs up his opinions with some hard figures of Fog Creek’s experience with their unconditional 90 day money back guarantee. So I had a bit of a giggle when I read that Chris Pirillo had to phone Napster to cancel his account. Why would you force someone to do this? It’s just bad PR.

I want to cancel my account. Do I have to call a phone nr??

Brendan, that is the most infantile opinion I’ve ever heard on the net, and that’s saying a great deal. If you don’t want to spend money, you’ll steal stuff? That’s all the justification you need? At least have the decency to come up with some quasi legitimate post rationalization about “fair use” like the rest of us. Not following your ethics is bad, but not even recognizing the existence of ethics is even worse.

Does anyone out there know the phone number to cancel napster??? Help!!

I agree, Napster sucks really hard. Many more options with free music and of course, making it hard to cancel is another one of their crappy services. Whatever happens to them, they deserve it.

Does anyone out there know the phone number to napster?

I had the exact same experience. It’s so shady! Here are their phone numbers:

Napster Inc
(888) 660-2265
(310) 281-5000
(800) 839-4210
9044 Melrose Ave
West Hollywood, CA 90069

Good luck!

I want to cancel my account.

hi, after months of wanting to cancel, i called the three numbers above, the one that works is 800 839 4210.

I said to the operator that i had wanted to cancel for a long time and that everyone is mad that they make it so hard to cancel. i asked for three or four months back. he said no. i asked twice more then asked for his supervisor. after holding two minutes, he said his supervisor approved three months refund.

good luck

It was a pain in the *** to cancel with napster. These people make it hard for most people to cancel their account. When I first started with napster, i did not know how much of a hassle that it would be in order for me to cancel my account. They kept on offering additional offers that I was not interested it. It took me almost a hour from start to finish in order to cancel. They need to better learn how to assist customers, before legal action is taken against their company!!!

I can’t even find the number. What is the number?

I am currently on the phone this very minute. It is officially cancelled. I also told them that it might be a good idea to put their phone number on the website so if someone wanted to call them, they could access it easily. I told them that i had to go to someone’s blog in order to cancel.
She said that she would make a note of it.

I wonder what the odds are that the number will appear on the site.

I cancelled the account because, i went to my media player and i played a track from my library which i had downloaded from napster months ago. Actually, i played it a few times. Anyway, i switched over to napster and i get a napster not detected. WTF! I just played these tracks seconds ago, plus i was listening to napster last week from the same computer. After reinstalling and repairing numerous times and going through the installshield, i kept getting the napster not detected.

I could go to the site and sign in but that site is generic. It looks like an amateur designed it. Anyway, the artist that i wanted to hear was not located on napster.co even though she was available on napster through the media player.

Goodbye and good riddance. :)

Luckily, i was only on the phone under 5 minutes.

Such a clumsy program such lousey download speeds (61/2 hours over a dialup connection for 1- 20 min song) such corrupt buisness ethics making it impossible to quit a bad thing from within the site. If you read this first then do not do napster I thought it would be fun but it wasnt

Thanks for the info. Finally got napster canceled. thx

All the complaining must be working because I was on the phone 5 minutes and they didn’t give me the run around or anything. I have a cancelled account!! The number to call is 800 839 4210. What a pain!!

I just spammed every napster email address I could find with a cancellation request. Either they cancel it based on my email or I’m disputing the next charge they put to my credit card. Every internet subscription I start from now on will be with a virtual credit card number so I can control it.

I cancelled Napster online, which was incorrect. (Available as a trap, but incorrect, nonetheless.) The next month, I called and cancelled. Napster assured me I was cancelled.

The next month, they charged me again.

CREEEEEPY!!!!

Tonight, I called to cancel, but you can only cancel over the phone, M-F 9AM - 5PM Eastern.

CREEEEEEPY!!!

Really? Wow….calling a phone number, being polite, and asking someone to please cancel your account is REALLY hard….not. Only for the lazy schmucks that Americans have become. And jsut a little fyi, you can cancel 7 days a week. It’s open 9-9 MF (not 9-5 like someone posted) AND 9-5 on the weekends eastern time. Is it really THAT hard to do it?

Also, the cancellation number can be found in a number of places, none of which being that difficult to find.

You people are truly lazy.

Why did you delete my comment? Pretty childish. No wonder you are sitting there boo-hooing over the fact that you had to make a phone call to cancel something. Deleting this comment again only makes you more childish. So pretty much, Americans are lazy as ****. I promise, it’s not that hard to pick up a phone, dial some numbers, be polite to the person who answers, ask them to cancel, wait a few moments, and be done with it.

I know how busy you must be with all your online blog posting such as this one. So it must be incredibly difficult to take the 10 minutes out of your action packed day to pick up a phone to cancel a subscription. Instead, you want to wait weeks and weeks to do it because you haven’t had a moment to yourself, then you probably want a refund because you didn’t cancel earlier. Really, people? Do you conduct yourself this way at your jobs?

The phrase “the customer is always right” is the worst possible thing that could have happened to American culture…because it lets “you people” act like self-absorbed children because you think you will be considered right. Grow up, really.

ah hah….now the first comment comes back. I take it back, you may not be as childish as I previously thought.

The only reason this topic enrages me so much is I have delt with Napster since 2003. I’ve cancelled, rejoined, cancelled again and in that time I never found it questionable that I had to call to cancel anything and the people there were never rude and always cancelled my service when I asked them to.

I work in technical support for a company that makes mp3 players and I know how demanding and absurd people who call in can be.

If you want to avoid getting stuck in “traps” as you’d say, read the terms and conditions before you sign up for something requiring your credit card. Have some common sense.

Wow, Austin, how paranoid can you be? People deleting your post? hmmm

Let me ask you, if having to call to cancel Napster is such a great idea, why don’t they make you call to open the account? I’ll tell you why, because no one would do it! Exactly what they’re hoping for by making cancellation so hard. It’s their lame attempt to coerce people into sticking around.

By the way, reading the agreement in advance doesn’t help. It doesn’t say they will require you to call to cancel.

Business 101: You keep customers by making a great product. If you have to resort to tricks to keep customers, it’s because your product sucks!

Since I used PayPal for my account, I cancelled the billing agreement through PayPal. Then I sent two messages to Napster using their various forms. Surely they’ll figure it out!

Well…I posted the first one and came back a few hours later and it wasn’t there for whatever reason (and I accessed the page from a different computer) so I wasn’t sure what to think. Anyway, can you cancel cable tv online?? I know in my area you can’t. I’m pretty sure I can’t cancel cell phone service either online. There are plenty of services you can’t cancel online. Calling someone to cancel is nothing new and it’s not really THAT hard. Although I will give you a tip, if you treat the customer service people like **** they are less likely to cancel your account.

But, it doesn’t help to tell the people who answer the phone that it was hard to find a number or anything to that affect. They have no control over where that phone number is placed nor do they care that it took someone all of 5 minutes to find the number.

Not saying you are one of those people, but I know people are out there that think this way.

Just looked at the service agreement, while true it doesn’t say you have to call to cancel, it does say you can’t cancel in the middle of a billing period. Just something people ought to be mindful of when they sign up for things. Netflix, Blockbuster, Napster and other things of the like…

1. They WILL bill you when your trial is over unless you cancel it.
2. You are not entitled to a refund if you neglected to do this. In most cases you had at least a week to figure out how to cancel. No one is THIS busy, and if you are this busy, why did you sign up in the first place?

OK so this is too funny i ran into this…i just canceled my aol account and noticed on my bank statement that i am getting a napster charge too. with some investigation i found out that a few months ago aol music net (which i probably signed up for years ago) has given all their accounts to napster…so…i had to call napster to cancel. well…i live in hawaii so in order to catch them on the east coast (6hrs difference) i have to strategicaly time my call…just to cancel. oh…i got the number from my bank statement and aol. no it is not posted in a convenient spot…its not being lazy, its about what good companies do in cyberspace to take care of their customers. internet is supposed to be about speed, not snail mail days. aloha

Wait, I’m a little confused…you saw on your bank statement that you were being charged…and the number was on the bank statement…and you say the number was not conveniently placed?? Hmm…that doesn’t make any sense to me.

While I agree there should be a contact link on their website…it really isn’t that difficult to find. My heart goes out to all those AOL MusicNow customer though who are getting charged by Napster because AOL is an unethical company and sent over closed accounts and told Napster they were active. You have to call AOL and get confirmation if you want your money back from Napster. That is a pain, but not Napsters fault.

I WANT THIS SERVICE CANCEL..

Canceling Napster is like trying to kill a roach, the dumb thing wont die.

I agree; it’s a pain! What is the phone number, I need to cancel my subscription.

Worst experience ever! I can’t believe the fee is to “rent” the tracks. What a waste of money. I’m cancelling it today! Plus it doesn’t help that their customer service REALLY sucks. Any recommendations for a better music program?

Pleasr cancel my connection to Napster right now.

I just cancelled Napster on the phone in about 5 minutes and there was NO HASSLE WHATSOEVER. If you are hesitant to call, don’t hesistate. It was PAINLESS.

You know, I did literally 30 seconds of browsing and found this in their FAQ.

“How do I cancel my Napster subscription or free trial I am currently in?

Canceling Napster

Pretty easy to find. Times are clearly marked, phone number placed (twice!) and a offer to listen to your complaints. Yes, the internet is about speed, but only if you use it right and use your brain when surfing. If i’m looking for a customer service number, i’m not going to look in press and media relations.

And it’s really not that outlandish to call to cancel a subscription to, well, anything. Give me one example of a subscription you can cancel online and i’ll give you ten examples of subcriptions you must cancel by calling them. If you haven’t noticed this by now, grow up and look around you. It’s the way the world works.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve occasionally browsed the Napster site in temptation to cancel but can never even find my account information area to cancel from. Napster’s a newer company. They should easily have a detailed online account information system, but no.. they don’t even have a simple “member login” on the home page. And when I do find the member login, it just says that I’m already a member and don’t need to subscribe again.

Sometimes I feel like they need to make it a written requirement that any business offering online signups must also offer online cancellation.

I think Napster is the only service I have that must be cancelled over the phone. Now that I finally have the number, I’ll be calling shortley.

Napsters a newer company??? Compared to what? Certainly not compared to the likes of Urge and Rhapsody. Napster was the first online music subscription service. Get your stuff straight. There is no member login on the home page because you’re NOT SUPPOSED TO LOG IN ON THE HOME PAGE. You download the software to access everything you need. Duh.

HEY! I JUST CANCELLED MY NAPSTER MEMBERSHIP. IT TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES WITH NO HASSLE. I FOUND THE TELEPHONE NUMBER ONLINE WITH MY ACCOUNT INFO. MAYBE NAPSTER GOT THE MESSAGE FROM PREVIOUS MEMBERS.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who had problems. I e-mailed napster three times asking them to cancel and quit billing me because I had never signed up in the first place. I should have known better than to assume it was cancelled. I was going to close my bank account, had switched all the funds to my other account (did this online btw) before I could get to the bank to close it, that account went in the negative b/c of Napster. So now my account was $40 in the negative b/c of the $10 charge and $30 nsf penalty. Grrr!

I googled “Napster 800″ and found this blog. Called and officially cancelled. Was not hard to do, although I didn’t have my Napster ID or anything cuz I had never signed up. The girl I spoke to was very patient with me and simply did her job. I know I hate it when people ***** at me for s*** I didn’t do so I wasn’t going to complain to her. Didn’t ask for money back or anything. Just washed my hands of the whole thing.

No maybe I can close that account.

That’s absurd. Maybe “you” didn’t sign up, but SOMEONE signed up for an account with your information. They don’t just randomly charge people for accounts when no one signs up.

So, I had to come here to find a number to call Napster after scouring their webpage for 30 minutes. Nothing…anywhere. If the person that found the number on the webpage would be so kind as to publish the URL, that would be great. Until then, I think you are lying. Show me you aren’t.

Here’s my story. I purchased tow napster accounts. One for me, and one for my girlfriends kids who live in Canada. Now, after two years of uninterrupted service, with the advent of Napster 4.0, th kids cannot access Napster. Called them up (after the 30 minute search for a p[hone muber, a Google search to find this blog). I was told, sorry the rules have changed. You will have to cancel the American account and buy a Canadian account. Ok, no problem. A little frustrating, but I guess I understand.
Cancelled the account, went on line to start a Canadian account. Great….I can’t use my American credit card. It won’t let me.
Back on the phone. They, Napster, one of the biggest names in online music services, have no way to allow an American to purchase a gift of service for a Canadian user, except with a Canadian credit card.
Funny, I can walk inot any store in the Greater Vancouver Regional District and buy anything I want with an American Credit Card, but Napster, an International company, can’t figure out how to do the same thing.

Too bad for them. They just lost not ONE but TWO Napster subscriptions from me. Over $400 a year, every year. No sweat, Someone else will be happy to get the money, I am sure.

You were NOT searching their page for 30 minutes to find a phone number. Had you looked on their MAIN PAGE http://www.napster.com and clicked “Quick Help” at the bottom you would hae immediately found their phone number when you clicked on “How do I cancel my Napster subscription or free trial I am currently in?”

As the gentleman stated before, the internet IS about speed, but use your freakin brain dude.

This is so sad, I just got this damn account and already, I’m trying to cancel. Damn, I could not find the number, nor a site to cancel!! I am so glad I found this site, or I would have lost my mind and had bad road rage!! Hell I want to go to sleep now. But once more, Thank You for saving me from taking my anger out on someone who did not deserve it.

Everyone should find out how to cancel a membership or account before clicking ‘yes’ on the terms and conditions if it includes your personal info.

In September I wiped my hard drive clean and reloaded everything. I downloaded Napster to register my “new” PC so that I could play tracks I had previously purchased through Napster Light. How did I get signed up for a Napster To Go account for $14.95 a month? Was I dazed and confused after sitting in front of my PC for hours putting it back together? Maybe.

I went wrong by not checking my credit card statements closely each month, and sadly didn’t notice the fee until the third time it had been charged. I called today to cancel and beg for a refund, however they would only refund the last charge. I am out $30 bucks. It sucks.

I don’t need Napster. They can keep my money (like I have a choice), but please don’t give them yours. There’s many more satisfying ways to get music than from this company.

Yes, Napster is very very bad news.

Had it one month to download songs to use in my TEFL English lessons, but had to discontinue with so many hassles actually successfully burning to CD. Not to mention the additional costs if you want to then use these songs for IPOD (not supported) or MP3.

HUUuGE problems to then cancel the subscription (I was a UK based customer). Impossible to cancel online, UK customers are forced to dial up a normal (not freephone) London number. My experience at 4.30pm was to first wait 19 minutes (American recorded voice had advised 5 minute wait) before hanging up and redialling. Second attempt (4.50pm), cut off after 7 minutes (didn’t even get to speak to anyone). Third attempt it was answered after 6 minutes, and cancelled.

Every stage of my dealing with this online music provided has just screamed out con. In the event of experiencing problems such as I have, I would recommend sending the following email, saving it as proof, then contacting your bank directly to flag Napster as a online fraud. You are within your rights to also lodge a complaint with the http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/.

It is only reporting unscupulous market traders like Napster that will force the regulators such as the Office of Trading Standards to alter their ways.

To Whom It May Concern,

This letter dated 3-January-08 is a formal notification of my cancellation of the Napster Subscription for £9.95 a month.

Future charges from Napster after 30 January 08 will be considered fraudulent unauthorized charges and will be reported to the issuing credit card company.

Thank you for the service you have provided thus far and please consider making online cancellation an easier process in the future.

I called this morning and cancelled Napster. The worst part was waiting on hold for 30 miinutes. The woman who answered the phone was nice, but tried her best to convince me to continue with Napster (another 10 minutes). She offered me a free 30 days, but I knew I would just have to call and cancel again next month. I cancelled because I was moving and going to change bank accounts. I probably would have gone back to Napster after the move, but after this experience I’ll find another company with an easier method to cancel a membership. 40 minutes isn’t awful, but when other services offer online cancellation, why bother with Napster?

After calling countless times and either hanging up because no one ever answered or being hung up on when someone did answer, I sent emails to the same dot com addies shown in Peter’s post above. Needless to say, about 3 weeks ago they charged my credit card again, so I disputed the charge with the cc company. The chargeback was successful and a couple of days ago I got an email from Napster telling me my billing info was no longer vaild. Maybe they got the point.

lol took me about a 5 minutes to cancel my subscription could’ve been easier to cancel normally but nothing really complain about
worse part about it was that they made me listen to fall out boy and fergalicious though

oh wait is everyone here from the UK service? lol

Tomorrow I plan to call Napster to cancel because their components aren’t compatible with my computer. I haven’t had the “dreaded” experience yet but if it’s anything like trying to cancel Rhapsody I suspect it’ll be about as much fun as getting your teeth pulled.

I agree with the above comments that if you’re going to make it super easy to join then you should make it super easy to leave and if you truly value your customer base then you’ll do your best to meet their needs. Doesn’t take a business major to know that.

I’ll let you know how it went…

I just called the 800 839 4210. The recording said my estimated wait time was under five minutes. I was only one hold for about a minute or two, and talked to the Rep who went by the name Troy ( very nice fellow) Of course he said is there anything that would change my mind. I explain to him that I was being charged twice per month and that, that was not making me a very happy camper. I also told him I have a Ipod and I use Itunes now and I have no need for Napster any more. He kindly took care of everything, and wish me well. It took all of 5 minutes and was very painless. I hope everyone else can have a pain free experience to.

peace and love

Well, I have to say canceling Napster was rather painless. They had me on hold for about 10 minutes but my service was canceled basically with no questions asked and one feeble attempt to change my mind. I’m impressed…

i recently subscribed to napsters free trial, at first i was led to believe that i can download songs ulimited for 12.95, then i relized that, it only allowed me to listen i would need the 14.95 plan, well i upgraded and now i cant even log in! no matter where i go to click member sign in it has been stuck on sycing your music for 15 min, i have not synced any music fr napster, 2 yrs ago napster was cool, now they are soooo fradulent. i am a little angry at them, thanks so much for posting their no.’s because the cancel link doesnt work when i first signed up and was in , now that i cant get in at all, i will have no choice but to cancel, btw, right now, the only no. on that list that is working of the moment is the 310 no. thanks i guess i will have to wait until the bankers hours and calll fr work , *sigh*

Misty they do offer free tech support! A company never know there if something on an acct is not working unless you inform them. And the # for customer support and tech support is 800.839.4210, Mon–Fri 9am to 10pm ET, Sat–Sun 9am to 5pm ET

people are so goofy. ive been subscribed to napster for about 4 years now and I absolutely love it. They’re tech support and customer service is based out of California and everyone know there is soooo knowledgeable! They have always fixed the few problems i had with my drm and windows media player. And the few times over the years ive had to cancel; its always been done with a save attempt and a speedy cancel. I really dont see how people can think the service is fraudulent in anyway. If someones subscribes to a service for a trial and doesn’t cancel the trial, how is a computer on the other side of the country supposed to know you dont want it?

I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!

im from singapore and I recently downloaded the napster software onto my desktop and i subscribed to the free trail, but now I dont want it. is there any way i can unsubscribe?

because they said that to unsubscribe i have to log on to napster and click ‘my account’ and so on, but i couldnt find the login buutton anywhere and they say napster is not available in singapore..?

please help!

thankyou

This is an outrange that i have to call up to tell them i want to quit can’t there be a button or somthing i can press just to cancel it??
Does it cost you to call up napster?

I have been a Napster Light member for many years. I went for a few months and did not do anything with Napster. When
I tried I could not burn tracks I HAD purchased and are in my
library. Also, the tracks had been turned into MP3 files and
I can only listen to 30 second bits. Something apparantly changed and I did not get a memo. Can anyone tell me anything? Or maybe better yet: how can I get music reliably now? Thanks for your time to read this! Purrs, K

This is the funniest and stupidest website on cancellation with napster.

Napster is so easy to cancel, I don’t know why anybody would have a problem with canceling. First you can cancel online through your account, and you still get to the end of your trial membership to use it.
Canceling through phone is so easy it took me like 30 seconds before someone picked up. The person was easy to talk to and cancelled quickly. Yes its true they do ask you why you want to cancel, but so what? you can say anything if you want to avoid the real answer. In fact i asked her a question and she even forgot to ask me the reason.
I asked her if most people cancel online and she said yes, she said she gets very few calls for cancellations and service questions.

What I do agree with is, that napsters service is not worth the price. $15 for streaming music when you can use youtube is just funny. And sure you can download music but there not even mp3’s and you have to buy a special device (unless using your computer) for it that nobody really buys now a days (compared to an ipod). Plus the music is gone when you cancel.
Price wise and service wise napster tanks. But cancellation wise its one of the easiest cancellations youll go through.
P.S. I guess this is just one opinion of a guy.

Ok Mr. Austin you either work for Napster or are a fkn *****. Companies like Napster are just taking advantage of the consumer. To make it simple please follow me here. You can sign up for the service without ever talking to anybody. But to cancel the service you HAVE TO call somebody. This should be illegal plain and simple. If you, as a company, accept electronic generation of customer accounts then you should be required to accept cancellation of customer accounts. Requiring a phone call is simply a way of forcing another step to hopefully make them more money. Napster isn’t the only company doing this. I had a run in with Wamu after Chase bought them. Their service went to ****. So I went online to cancel since this is where I made the account. No luck. I called to cancel no luck. I was told that I have to write a letter, state my entent to cancel, sign it, mail it, and that faxing wasn’t good enough, it had to be mailed. Companies like Napster and Wamu are simply practicing consumer abuse.

what a load of balls, just cancelled my account too. so convoluted

what a load of **** they are i cant cancel online atall

I have been looking for a way to cancel my napster subscription to Napster for 3 days.I wish i would’ve read these comments before now.It was so hard for me to look up the music i wanted

What Do You Think?
