“Microsoft Corp. will have to supply the computer code for its Windows program to a group of states seeking stiffer antitrust sanctions against the software giant, a federal judge ruled on Friday.”
Quite honestly, making Windows “open source” is the best thing Microsoft could do. They'd still be able to develop a “distribution” and sell it; more importantly, these silly states wouldn't have much of a case. Imagine a Windows core optimized for speed, another optimized for gaming, and yet another optimized for defragging. Well, you get the idea. It's not out of the question - at least, for those of us who use the OS and appreciate what it offers. For what it's worth, I've heard of far more problems with OS X than I have with XP.
