Can Washing Dishes be Less of a Chore?

I hate having to do the dishes. Flat out… HATE it. Does anyone like it? Seriously. Flyboycom in our chat room sent these tips in to help us try to make washing dishes a little more fun.
- Turn on the music. It’s amazing what a little music can do. I modify my song selection by my mood. Sometimes I want a quiet reflective atmosphere to allow me to relax and contemplate while I wash. Other times I’m energized, and upbeat songs are better to motivate me. Find your songs and turn them up.
- Make an assembly line. With one person scraping, one washing, one drying, and one putting away, the chore runs smoothly and quickly. Instead of assigning one person to do the dishes on different nights, round up everyone and have it done in a fraction of the time every night.
- Have a conversation. One couple I know purposely avoids using the automatic dishwasher in the evenings. After dinner dishes has become their time to talk and reflect on their days. It may seem weird to think of reconnecting with someone over a sudsy sink, but it works. Washing dishes can be a monotonous chore. The benefit is, that your hands keep working in rhythm, while your mind or your mouth goes on with something more interesting.
- Have a reward. In one friend’s family, there is no dessert until the dishes are done and the table is cleared. There’s very little complaining about the chore now, just a knowledge that as soon as everyone chips in, there will be dessert. Find a way to reward yourself for completing the dishes and the time will fly.

Basically, if you hate doing them then the problem is in your head. I’d look there first.

Good cooks and Martha Stewart will tell you – split the chore! Not split it by several people… if only life was that generous!… but wash as you cook. So that at the end of the cooking, you have no dishes left except those you going to use to serve your food.
Then, when you finish your meal, make it as easy as possible to wash: scrap as much of the scrap as possible away so you are left with, as far as possible, just an oily plate / bowl.
When you stack up the dishes, segregate them. Utensils on one side, plates on another, glasses, bowls all separate. Then it makes it easier to grab something and scrub away! A lot faster too!

Yeah, I have this large knife which isn’t dishwasher safe, so if I accidentally knock it, I instinctly try and catch it, I usually catch it and then Bam, im cut.

I have a few tips to share.
1. If you have a large family or you’re a bachelor, it doesn’t matter; don’t let the dirty dishes pile up for a few weeks. Being faced with a large amount of dishes to wash can be daunting.
2. Rinse your dishes, silverware, cups and glasses after every meal. Develop the habit of doing this after every meal and your dish washing time will be greatly reduced. If you have a small family, it’s easier just to wash the evenings dishes and be done with it.
3. Don’t cut yourself, use a glass cleaning tool.

I exploded a tall drinking glass one day to clean the bottom of the glass, thankfully all I got was a small cut but, it could have been a lot worse.
I used to enjoy washing dishes. but nothing beats a dishwasher :)

Doing dishes is only a chore when the dishwasher is broken. As my wife would say…”just fix the damn thing” . Having a dishwasher frees up a lot of time in the evening to spend some quality time with your family. Plus, in todays world when both adults in the house have to work inorder to pay the high cost of living, time is very important.

I never have a problem doing my dishes because frankly, I wash each dish and utensil after I use it. My sink is never filled with dirty dishes.

Get and use a dishwasher! Even if there’s just 2 of you, it beats washing dishes by hand, gets them cleaner as well, and if you get an energy-saver dishwasher, uses less water.

I have to agree with awilliams24, that shouting is VERY annoying. I try to listen while at work and that jump in volume blasts my eardrums. I end up shutting off those videos you do that in. Please keep this in mind in the future.

Luckily, I can get out of washing dishes… for Chris at least… I recently purchased a Logitech Quickcam 9000, so I’m “set” on webcams for awhile :-)
