Can a Cool USB Beverage Chiller Keep Your Drinks Cold?

In front of me is a small, light-weight device. I’ve seen it advertised in the past. When I ask people to send me ideas for cool USB products, I keep getting this one sent to me. It’s a USB beverage chiller. I was skeptical as to whether one of these would work or not, so I decided to try it for myself. Once it’s plugged in for awhile, it will cool to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, which is definitely pretty chilly.
I didn’t realize Mac OS X could do this. I had this cooler plugged into the laptop, and at one point the Mac told me that it was drawing too much USB power and would shut it down. Wow. That’s impressive. So, I changed it up and plugged it into one of the USB grommets on my desk. Or, you can plug it into a wall.

They would probably be convenient on airplane rides, if you are on an airplane that has USB ports near the seats.

I bought one just before CompUSA made the big announcement. I think the device is good at helping to keep something cold, and just barely. Overall I give a barely passing grade. I did put a very soft peanut butter cup on the unit, and checked on it about 20 minutes later and it was firm again. A better idea would be to be able to put a can or typical glass into some type of holder that does the same thing
