Cable Management

Jthermane wrote: “USB, Power, FireWire… there are many types of cables out in the world that do many different things. They can bring things to life, carry data, output sound. But the more cables you get, the harder it is to keep track of them. They start showing up in different locations around your room or home office. Here are my top five tips for cable management.”
- Use one drawer or box for all of your cables. This may be hard. However, when you go looking for that special USB cable for your iPod, it cuts down the look time drastically.
- LABEL, LABEL, LABEL After a while, you may have two or three black power cords that have different ends… but say the same thing on the adapter. Use a silver sharpie (4 for $5.19 at staples), or buy a pack of file folder labels, and write on them in PEN. Nothing’s worse than having the lettering fade off a label in a drawer full of identical cables.
- When storing, fold them up and put a rubber band around them. This makes it easier to store in a drawer, or any other small area.
- Put heavily used USB cords into the plugs in the back of the computer. This makes it easier to connect those “quick use” cables in the front ports.
- If you don’t have USB connections on the front of the computer, or if you have more USB cords than your computer has connections… buy a USB hub. It makes access to ports much easier, and you can keep it right under your screen. When buying a hub, always think about future expansion.
- BONUS TIP!!! Try and keep cords going to the same area rubber-banded or twisty-tied together. This makes it easier to control the mess of cords behind the computer, and makes it look more sightly if your computer isn’t in a case.

I manage my connected cables like you manager yours in the draw =) The key is tucking the cables behind the table so no one can see them. hehe

actually, for cables ( i am a amateaur audio-visual technician (mabey that sounds too pro….)) but for me i use the white masking tape thing and use a black sharpie on cords to keep them organized. if you have enough cords, get a board with holes in it (you know, like for tools) and use that to store cables on. power on one side, data on the other.

There are really excellent re-usable Velcro cable wraps that I use all the time.
One more caveat. Never ever twist a cable when coiling it. This includes all cables; extension cords, microphone cords, AV, PC…….. When you coil them let them follow the natural path of the inner wires. It used to make me cringe when a fellow technician would use his palm and elbow as a wire spool, and then pull tightly while wrapping the cable around it. This absolutely destroys the inner wire strands, which are not as flexible as the outer rubber/vinyl jacket. You’ll have landfill fodder in no time flat if you do this repeatedly.

it’s also important to manage the cables in your PC case as well for better heat management. not only the cables outside the computer case.

For the cables that the store in boxes, drawers, or in laptop cases I look for something that is cheap, easy, and able to be labeled with a marker. Something that fits all of these characteristics, is paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls. All you have to do is wrap your cables up and push them through the opening of the paper towel/toilet paper roll. This is something that everyone has in their house and usually has a good supply off. After all, what else would you do with the rolls? Throw them away, what a waste of a product that can be recycled.

Another alternative to using rubber bands (the break or degrade over time) and paper tubes (they still fall out of the tubes) is to use zip lock type sandwich and storage bags.
Smaller cables and shorter lengths go in the sandwich bag size, wall warts and longer cables in the quart size and sets of cables and devices in the gallon size. Since they are see-through you can look at the contents, they don’t get twisted with each other and you can group stuff like cables and connectors if they are matching set or functionality.
Cliffystones is kind of right, but you can use your hand or arm to coil cables so long as you aren’t forcing the cable to twist. For computers and home AV equipment, the cable length is usually less than six feet so by letting one end dangle and loosely wrapping you won’t damage the cable. If it is a long length this won’t work as the cable’s mass and friction with the surface stop it from turning as you wrap it. In that case, you have to do just as Cliffystones said or else the shielding or cable fibers will break (depending on the type of cable).

Over the last week I’ve been redoing my entire home office. My new desk came so I had to rearrange everything. I still have some more work ahead of me but I think the most difficult stuff is done now.
The cable mess when I disconnected everything was unbelievable. It took me about 2 days before I finally had everything reconnected again. I did like you and put all the cords and clutter behind my desk. No one can see it and that’s the way I like it.

I have to admit, I am a cable nazi, i HATE cables, I always have.. even when playing in my band, I carry a piece of carpet with me so I can cover all the cables… the same goes for computers… i HATE having cables visible. I have a lot of cables in my office set up because I have a lot of stuff in my office (3 monitors, soundboard, monitors, audio interfaces, ipods, external drives, burners) stuff like that, so wire management is a MUST. My desk is PERFECT for wire management, because it was pretty much made to hide wires (its the Mikale Desk from Ikea) and it has a board across the bottom which acts as a support, but what I did was screw on a few shelf hooks, and that allows me to set all my wires on the shelf. I use suggest using VELCRO zip ties. I use to use the plastic ones(and there are still some plastic ones in the pics that follow), but I rearrange my desk FAR to often and having to cut plastic zip ties and buy new ones was getting annoying (your local dollar store should sell Velcro zip ties) so when you look at my desk, you would assume that it has a mess of wires, but the truth is, the only wire you can see is the power bar chord (i put a power bar on the shelf that I put the wires on, so everything can just plug into that, and it cuts down on the wires you see.
heres a few pics of my desk for proof that you can have a lot of stuff that has wires, but not have a mess of wires!
