Buying a Mac Pro

The night this video was recorded…. I FINALLY ordered my Mac Pro!!! Yes, that’s right. I’m making the switch, and my Mac is being built, baby!
Freeware is what has driven me closer and closer to use a Mac exclusively. I currently run the live stream off of a Mac Mini. I use CamTwist, which allows me to add video effects. It allows me to integrate live weather from WeatherBug. And of course, I can also add in our live chat. I use a free IRC client called Colloquy. Knowing I couldn’t find Windows-equivalent software, I made this choice.
I’ve already nick-named my new Mac! It’s name is “Big Mac”. Get it? It’s beefy!! The specs are just amazing, and blow even MY mind! Yes, I went with the Terrabyte drive. Right now, I only bought two Gigs of Ram. However, I’m thinking about upgrading to much more. I just haven’t decided HOW much yet.
Do you want another reason I’m making this switch? What about the fact that it just works? And the software works? I can configure my Mac to have up to 32 Gigs of Ram. I mean, seriously. Why wouldn’t I switch?
I’m not abandoning Windows completely, not by a long shot. I’ll be running Windows inside of my Mac, using Boot Camp. Am I an Apple fan boi? Absolutely not. Is a Mac perfect? Absolutely not. I still support both companies. I will still use products from both companies. If you look at my MacBook, you’ll see the Apple logo is covered up. So it’s not a matter of “loving” Apple. It’s a matter of getting what I needed and wanted, at a price I can handle. And of course… it’s a matter that it will work.

Absolutely I completly agree. I am an MCSE and earn my living out of Microsoft Servers and backoffice servers, however my laptop is a Mac Book Pro, why? because it works!, its fast, reliable, boots instantly and is a pleasure to use. I have owned numerous laptops over the years and this is by far and away the best.
In the house the kids and wife use an iMAC because its simple, reliable and they dont harrass me constantly to fix it and explain how to do things as they used to with a PC in the house.
I have a PC in the office for work with XP Pro and I love that as well. I beleive in using the best tools for your job and get quite irritable with the PC v MAC debate and the fact that people are so anti one or the other. Just use whats appropriate, how great that we do have the choice!

Chris, you’ve totally done the right thing!
I’m a switcher myself.
I was so disappointed of Vista last year and tired of all this trouble one encounters with Windows (whichever version).
Would you’ve asked me about a year and a half ago, I’d never even considered looking at a Mac – they’re something for geeks – I thought.
But Vista made me become interested in Macs and about half a year ago I did it: I bought one of those brand new iMacs – the Extreme actually, ordered on the day they were released.
I never ever regretted the switch!
This iMac is the best computer (also PC) I’ve ever had.
I’ve never bragged more about a computer… ;)
You know, me buying an iMac inspired many people around me to think about the switch, too – and some of them already did switch, others are preparing for it.
Microsoft has made a huge mistake with Vista and this time they WILL get hurt – figuratively (well, financially) speaking, of course.

So It’s been a nice ride all the back to when you were in Des Moines, too bad it ends here. I thought the article was called “Windows Fanatics” not “Mac Fanatics”.
Some of us either can’t, won’t, or refuse to pay the huge cost of “It just works.” Some of us are on limited resources and “Just Can’t”.
So here it ends.
I will go elsewhere to get my “Window Fanatic” fix.
Have fun in the Apple world!

Ok, this begs the question. Why, if freeware is your driving force are you not going with one of the new laptops runing Linux. There are several models with better spec’s than the Mac and the freeware running on Linux is much more extensive than anything available for the Mac.

I’m curious. Why cover up the Apple logo?? I have a Dell laptop and I don’t cover up it’s logo, even though my main machines have been Macintosh since 1984 and Apple II+ & IIe & IIc prior to that. It seems that since you are proud of a product, you are ultimately ashamed to let anyone see you using it. Not bashing. Still curious as to why the coverup.

You didn’t mention that the Mac Pro is way cheaper….
I have been looking for that upgrade, to a dual quad core Xeon. I priced it out with the Dell, and the Mac Pro comes in a full $1500 cheaper. That is enough money to add a couple of HDs, more RAM, Windows 64, and still have money left over. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw how much cheaper the Mac Pro workstation was than the equivalent Dell workstation. Unfreakinbelieveable….

Dear Chris:
Congratulations on your decision to purchase a new MacPro! I, like many others, look forward to you reporting on both the ‘ups and downs’ of the new system.
As I have sated on my on little blog:
“Well Chris, now that you are an official Mac switcher, may I extend my official welcome to you, and, also, a big thank you on behalf of all of the people that I know that you will help, in the future, when they too switch to the Mac as you have.”
Again, looking forward to your unbiased experiences and reports on the Mac Pro, a system I can only just afford to dream about. (nice dream though!)
Much luck!

Chis,
Let me start off by saying congratulations on the order! I still remember how I felt when I made the switch myself. You mentioned that you only ordered it with 2GB of ram, and i agree with you decision Apple sells their Ram at a ridiculously high amount. I would recommend you buy the Ram from macsales.com also know as OWC.
Once again congrads on the switch.

Before you commit to Boot CampI’d strongly suggest that you try either Parallels or Fusion.
I’ve got them both running on other machines and the ease of HOT SWITCHING between OS’s makes boot camp a sluggard

Way to go gnome!
I’ve switched just before Christmas. I have used PCs ever since they came on the market and now with the mac, I’m enjoying using a computer again! My mac has 4GB and I think it’s a minimum for what I do with it.
I cannot think of anything that is better on a PC. Specially now that Windows apps can be run on them. I hesitated a long time before making the plunge. Honestly, for the first month, I had goosebumps every time I used it.
I personally use Parallels, so going from a mac program to a Win program (when I absolutely have to) is totally seamless and transparent.
From now on you will feel the real joy of using a computer.

I’m a year and a half ahead of you in the big switch. I forgot to unsubscribe to Windows fanatics and would glance through the headlines just to keep up. Then I started seeing more Mac articles and the next thing you know… here you are. It’s not cheap but it’s so worth it in time spent not confuguring and screwing around. Like the tech guy earlier (Mark) I converted my wife to a Macbook and have only had to show her a few things and she never bugs me with questions about how to use it. The kids are next. My guess is 90% of people will find iWork ($79) a more than adequate (friendlier) replacement for Office ($250).
Welcome!

Congratulations. Enjoy. What’s especially cool is the design of the enclosure for easy access to the guts for installing RAM, upgrading HDD, installing cards, etc. You don’t use it often, but when you do, you smile. (The HP-Voodoo collaboration Blackbird 002 takes these accessibility concepts even further. But, it’s not a Mac.) I think your audience can handle the news… especially when you are so patient in explaining how you got here and what your plans are. As for RAM, I know you’ll be heading past 2 gb. But taking it all the way to 32 is pretty pricey. What apps are you planning to run that will need all of that?

they’re not cheaper. Dells are more expensive because they have the latest and greatest graphics cards.
If the Mac Pro had a gamers’ card I’d make the switch myself.
and wouldn’t go for Linux because linux GUI is modeled after windows and it’s even more clunkier… and GUI for it. the Macs GUI is and has been far superior in years.
I’m a gamer. And as a gamer I love to own a Mac instead of Vista because “it works!” and the GUI, however, the hardware for games lacks so I stay on the PC. Just give me a good gamer’s video card Apple, and you have me!

Hi good choice, I switched to macs a while back. I run mac osx but have dual screens and have windows in one runthrough vmware fusion. It is a great combination and allow to run both together and to trasnfer files from one to another and you can even copy and paste between the two.
I only have an imac with 2 gigs but it rocks! Its a core2 due and as I already had a 22inch widescreen LCD I hocked that up via the mini dvi port and dual screen heaven here I am!

Have you heard of the Mac Pro? You can make it run Windows, so no compatibility is lost, it’s one of the most easily upgradeable computers on the planet(no wires in the way), and it will save you money on a computer in the longrun, because you can just upgrade a single component, instead of buying a whole new machine.

bibbler brings up a great point. a lot of these people spend a lot of time on the computer, wasting time by playing games. then they grow an ego about what they know (dont know). they never spend time learning the environment, learning how to manage system administration through shell, networking systems, security, etc..
they just end up being n00bs.
