Buying a Desk

I am looking into possibly buying myself a new desk soon. These tips sent in by community member Serores will definitely come in handy for me. I hope they will for you, as well.
- Size: If you’re only going to be using a laptop and maybe some books and papers, you dont have to waste your money on a huge desk. This way, you can save a lot of money and buy other things to enjoy in your home office. On the other hand, if you have a huge monster computer like the one Chris gave to Kat, you may want a bigger desk. This also depends on the kind of monitor you’re using, and if you want your computer tower on or under your desk.
- Shape: Chances are, if you’ve had your house for awhile you already have a pretty cluttered office. So, here comes the question of where will you put your desk? If you want it in the corner, get a triangular one. If you want it just on the flat wall get a square one. If you want it on the ceiling, you’re looking at spending a lot of money on duct-tape… so I dont recommend that.
- Compartments: If you’re the kind of person with a lot of knicknacks, papers, books, and other miscellaneous items, you may want to look into a desk with a lot of compartments. The compartments should be various sizes to fit everything you need. This is where, if you want to get fancy, you can bring a list of things you’ll have on your desk shopping with you, to remind you of what you have. This way, you can look at a desk and picture how everything would go on it.
- Quality: Simple, if you have a lot of heavy stuff… you dont want your desk to fall over. Also, a good sturdy desk is best when you have kids or pets that are always jumping off the walls. Another exaple of quality is wood smoothness. If you’re an artist like me, you know what it’s like to draw on a table with gaps between the boards when you have no tablet.
- Look: I know for me this would be the last thing I look at. However, for some this may be of high importantance. Pick something that matches your style and color scheme (if you have one). Also, stay away from annoying bright crazy colors that won’t let you focus on a book or the screen, because you are distracted by your desk.

good top 5 list. and the quality of a desk shouldn’t be underestimated. the saying you get what you pay for, applies very well. if you buy a cheap desk it’s likely not made of real wood, more likely some sort of plywood or synthetic material, and those firstly look uglier, and may not be as strong. my dad had an old synthetic wood desk and it didn’t do too well over time :)

I highly recommend Ikea. Most of their stuff is of decent quality, and they love to have “Modular” setups, which means you buy specific parts. If you need a lot of compartments, you can get all compartments, etc.

I found shape especially important! I use a corner desk; its shaped like a wedge so its actually touching 2 walls. It was a great way to make an unused portion of my room usable, and has plenty of space for my monitors (2), printer, and speakers.

I have 2 desks that are almost next to each other. They make an L shape and they’re separated by a humidifier.
The first desk is one I’ve had almost all my life. It’s older than me, I know that!
The second one is homemade. It contains an old door we don’t use anymore, some strips of wood that angle down for arm comfort at the keyboard, a hardcover top, and 2 file cabinets from Staples. All in all, about $300 on supplies total.
These desks are very nice, long, and hold what I want them to hold, and I am very much satisfied!

I am hoping to get a new desk some time in 2008. The one I have right now its getting kind of old. Unfortunately I don’t really have the money right now as I am trying to get two 24″ Dell monitors. After I get those I definitely want a new desk.

I have a good sturdy desk but one thing to remember when purchasing a good sturdy desk, is they weigh a ton when it comes time to move it. Of course no one is ever home to help when I decide to rearrange things. Mine also has a little cubby with a door underneath for the tower, a place where I now store “stuff”. I bought an end table at kmart for my tower so it was more accessible.

Exellent Top Five! I agree with your assessment that a Corner Desk is most optimal. Unfortuantely, I am using an old microwave cart as a computer desk. It holds my 22 inch widescreen, wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse, satellite speakers (sub underneath), and ashtray, with the tower sitting next to it. Not the most optimal arrangement, but it’s working…

Corner desks are great and a space saver at that. My desk is a regular desk (rectangle) like a teachers desk and takes up half of my small room. But it does afford great room for monitors and a laptop. Although, corner desks are better for multiple computers, just add a roll-y chair (technical term haha), and easily turn from one system to a laptop to another. Keep in mind one of two things for storage – one that has alot of room beneath it so you can add storage / file cabinets, or one with well-built built-in cabinets.

I recently bought an L-shaped desk and hutch made by Bush (Sommer set collection). I have to agree that the most important thing to consider when buying a desk is the size. If you plan to upgrade or share the desk with a spouse or kids get a desk that is large enough for everyone.

I’ve been looking at buying a desk myself, haven’t quite found the one I want yet, but I never really did think about what kind of space I would be needing for my things I have here now. I’ve considered doing a larger desk, but I live in a small apartment, not a lot of space, and paying rent sucks enough as it is.
I currently have 3 computers running.
Windows Vista Ultimate, 3.46 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 750 GB HD, ATI Radeon X1650 Pro
Windows XP Professional, SP2, 1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 120 GB HD, Stock Video
Debian 4.0 Sarge Linux , 2.93 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Stock Video
Having three monitors is a pain in the rear, especially for all of them being CRT’s. I’ve been looking into doing KVM for these computers, just haven’t had the time to put a lot of thought into it. If anyone has any suggestions on setting all of this up, I’m up for ideas. My Radeon X1650 Pro has a dual VGA port which I could turn into dual for my main computer.

This is an excellent top 5 list for purchasing a desk. My current desk is about 4 1/2 years old. I think it was about $100 when we bought it and I believe it can still be purchased at Staples for around the same price. While this desk has served me well over the last few years, as my home office continues to expand, I find myself feeling the limitations of the provided desk space more and more. I’ve just recently added a second monitor to my setup and a few months ago purchased a second printer. Last summer I also added a few TIX clocks that reside on top of my hutch. To compensate for the lack of desk space, I purchased a simplistic four foot table. Sure, the table works, but this certainly doesn’t feel like a home office to me.
That being said, I’ve recently started looking into purchasing a quality desk that will not only look professional and allow me to stay organized, but will also have the necessary space I need. In my opinion, a desk hutch is a necessity. Having that extra storage space never hurts. Purchasing a desk that has more empty space than you might need is also a good idea. Why do I say this you might ask? Well, even if you don’t need that space right now, someday that extra space might come in handy. I currently use a 19″ LCD as my main monitor and a 17″ LCD as my second monitor. I have plans to expand that to dual 24″ widescreen LCD’s. Down the road I will eventually go even larger than that. No doubt, having that extra desk space will become a necessity.
For me personally, I want a desk that will last me for the next decade, if not longer. Is that unrealistic? I don’t think so. So long as you take care of your desk and don’t move it around a lot, it should last you many many years.

I have two corner desks from Office Depot several years ago. Unfortunately they’re no longer available. With book cases and ancillary storage they take up most of a 9 by 12 room. The work areas are opposite each other. It’s easy to spin around and go from one “command center” to the other. This may sound like over-kill, but a couple years ago I came into some extra “play-money” (money to play with) so I built four computers to add to my Sony Vaio. One has duo CPUs and twin flat screens. I use it for video/photo editing, etc. Another is a linux server with a Samsung TV/Monitor. This one has been upgraded to a newer MB with duo-core AMD Athlon. The other two, along with the Sony, are on the opposite desk with a four “pole” JustCom KVM (switches audio as well); the fourth position is handy for the laptop and other equipment testing. As you may imagine, there’s plenty of RAM and HDD storage, a GIGabit LAN, and aDSL feeding a wireless access point router.
I’m retired now, so this keeps my idle time busy.

Quality is super important to a desk if you would go and by a cheap desk like I have like say at WAL MART or some other store you are taking a risk that your computer could fall or break.

Don’t forget function and height! You want to be sure to have a desk that is the appropriate height– if possible, simulate your everyday use in the furniture showroom before buying.
And function: Are you interested in podcasting or creating videos like Chris does? a desk with a reflective (acoustically like metal, or visually reflective like glass) surface might not be your best choice. Choose a desk that has good cable management options — imagine the best wooden desk with no holes for your monitor / keyboard to feed through! what a disaster….
happy desk shopping!
