Buy USB Flash Drives

Bowler4Ever is a long-time regular in our live community. He has previously sent in some excellent top five lists. Here is a new one from him… which should help you when buying your next USB Flash Drive.

  • Are you worried about durability of these drives? Don’t be! These drives are hard and sturdy, and they can even withstand small drops onto concrete or asphalt (been there, done that). Drops onto your wood floors from your desks are taken like cake by these tiny little tough sticks! Don’t worry, drop ‘em and they’ll still work!
  • What are you using the drive for? If you’re simply storing very important documents for your workplace and nothing else, a 512mb stick will do just fine. For a Linux distro like Ubuntu, 1GB will work perfectly, as the Ubuntu distro is slightly under 700mb, the size of your typical CD. For a moderate amount of music or various installers, I recommend 2GB, as you never know how much music you’ll want to keep…ESPECIALLY if you’re trying to back up your iTunes library! For a large amount of music or home videos, 4GB is perfect, if not more than enough than you really need. 4GB is mainly for those who are complete media “junkies” and those who also compile installers on there as well.
  • Go for the indicator display on the drive. Sometimes files are bigger than you think, and flash dries can sometimes fill up pretty quick, so you’ll want to have a good peek at how much space you have left.
  • Go with brands that are well-known and trusted. If you know how to search for computer hardware/accessories, look for those drives that professionals know and trust or look at Consumer Reports. Always buy the best you can afford. (Remember, do your homework!!!!!)
  • Look at the specs for the drive! Remember, you buy it and open it, some places will just say “Oh well, you opened it! Not our fault!” NOTE: Some drives do NOT support USB 2.0, so make sure if you still have USB 1.1, you check to make sure it will work in USB 2.0! For Linux users: Some brands are allowing Linux installers, so look for the penguin on the back of the box!
  • Remember, whatever you do with the drive…keep it legal! These things were not made for illegal/pirating purposes. It’s foolish and dangerous!

Concerning durability: I actually–and accidentally–left my SanDisk flash drive in my pants pocket and threw it in the washer…and then the dryer. Still works! To say that that is an impressive feat of durability, I think, is a ridonkulous understatement. Not that I’m recommending anyone try this, but if it should happen, know that it COULD still work.

I own a sony drive for my computer repair files. It holds so much (2GB). I recommend these to all kinds of users. I have been using them since they have been brought into this techie world! They are great. I’ve actually left mine in a laptop and bent it 90 degrees and all I had to do is bend it back and it still works. Amazing! You really don’t have to worry much about losing info at all, unless you lose the device all together. Keep all your important files without having any worries at all! Some even have protection so only you can access your files. Brilliant little things!

I use an SD card reader/writter.

same here… its much more convienient

My 64 MB flash drive works just fine for me.

Hello,

I have a suggestion with regard to USB Drives. A WRITE ENABLE/DISABLE Switch would be a very good idea. With the increasing number of viruses, spyware, malware, etc. a WRITE ENABLE/DISABLE Switch would provide additional protection.

I hope that manufacturers of USB Disk/Pen Drives read your blog.
Cheers …

I think there is a typo…

Some drives do not support USB2.0? I think this is wrong…

Some drives do not support USB1.1 in my experience…

Then, you have the memory sticks used in cameras and PDAs… you can use them as flash drives as well, just get a memory stick reader… but you better make sure your sticks are standard (4Gig SD sticks are NOT standard).

I got a 12megapixel camera for Christmas, and it only supports ‘vanilla’ SD sticks- no support for my 4 Gig or 8 Gig SD sticks (over 2 Gig SD is a different standard; the stick is made in SD standard with non-standard sizes)

On a slightly different front; my HP PDA claims to only use “standard” SD sizes, but it reads my 8Gig and 4 Gig SD just fine- but one of my card readers WON’T.

Really crappy that this kind of data isn’t clearly on the labels…

The article says look for a flash drive with an indicator… for space free?!?! Where do I get one of those??? Mine have lights for activity (so you don’t corrupt the drive by pulling it out early).

Flash Drives may well survive a certain amount of abuse but I had a 4Gb drive fail after only 2 months of light use & I know of others who have had similar problems with the same model. On the other hand I have a 512Mb drive of the same make which is well used, a few years old and will still work, although it has to be tilted into action. In the same month my 4GB failed I had a client’s not very old 512Mb drive fail whilst copying data to it. My branded 4Gb drive works well after a year although it seems slow in places. I’ll have to check that out some time. I guess the point is that these things like any other can and will fail some time.

Hey chris, thanks for the video, i had recently purchased a 4gb sandisk micro cruzer, and It’s going great! thanks once again Chris!

I have a 2GB one it suits all my needs, thinking about getting a bigger one though so i can put movies on it. they really are very cheap this days and such a handy thing to have

Man flash drives have come down in price. I really find them usefull..

Great videos chris !

Make sure you get a USB drive that requires a password. Since these drives are so small, you WILL lose at least one of them in your lifetime. You will probably have something on your drive (especially if it a 4G drive) that you won’t want others to view.

Nice vid! I could use a 256 megabyte USB with know problem. I mean You can use A USB drive with almost anything. I mean for simple word docs you can save a couple bucks on by getting 512mb.

some good tips, but i just use a thumbdrive with about 256 or so MB it is doing me fine, except for when i want to transfer music i can not store as many songs as i would like to

I Own Many Of These Drives, And Have Seen Them Up To 12GB. I Like Them and Once Had One Wrapped In Rubber, This Had A Large Amount Of Durability Since I Dropped It In The Hall And Many People Stepped On It, Still Wrks Though. Thanks For The Tips!

The only thing I could add is speed of access. If you plan on using it with vista ready-boost it needs to have certain speed to be used. All flash drives have different access speeds according to Microsoft.

This is very important when you buy a drive on ebay. a cheep drive may write very slowly, so be careful! make sure you ready the fine print! i remember seeing one that said it had a write speed of 20 mbps. complete crap

I use a flash drive in my Car PC unit . I boot up in TinyXP . about to watch TV,DVD,video files (AVI,mpg,…). also have it running Both Sat radios,GPS,HD radio, and more.

It get hot in the car. And it takes just about any bumps I can give it.

Also have the same unit in my Offroad 4X4 heavy modded Pathfinder.
No skips at all.

Both my main flash drivers are 16GB each

lovin my sandisk contour 8gigs. kinda big buts it hold alot

I use my usb flash drive for school mostly. Like if i have to write an essay or a paper or something i just pop it in,transfer it over to the flash drive, and head to school. Also if i need to take something home from school i use it too.

I think that cruzer flash drives are best but hate the way that they loadd u3 slowly

I have probably 10 or so flash drives now. The only one I use now is my sandisk 4GB. They’re much more convenient than CDs or floppies, especially for schoolwork between the computer lab at school and home.

Hey, nice tips Bowler4Ever! It makes flash drives more…useful.

I agree that these USB drives and pretty sturdy. I’ve had one for a couple of years now and it hasn’t let me down yet!

I remember once leaving mine 256mb USB stick in my clothes and washing them, to my surprise it was still working after I let it dry for a while though the data that was on there from before got deleted though =( but this prooves just how much those drives can take before giving up.

ebay is the best way to buy a flash drive

i carry a 1tb external hd w/me lol jk
i got a sd card reader/writer thing w/ like a 2 or 4 gb

i have 1 1GB USB and a 512MB USB and a 500GB external harddrive

in my opinion, drives are a missnomer. the industry , well, more like marketing chooses to call them drives but drives to me infer moving parts. in “flash drives”. there NO moving parts.

it’s more or less a single memory chip on a board with contacts. so nothing to easily damage from a drop. Although I wouldn’t leave them in a hot car.

however, this post gives an impression that they’ll last forever. Well, if you simply Google it. you’ll find plenty of cases were they’ve simply ceased to function.

I bought a usb drive and a Pupetmaster bust from ghost in the shell. Took a glue gun to it and stuck them together so no losing it here.

i´ve just bought a 4gb usb flash drive, can i use this to watch movies on a dvd player that has a usb connection??? please help

Hey chris, don’t fly anytime soon…..that comment might get you “grounded” (pun intended)….thanks for the tips they really helped while purchasing my PNY Optima Attache 4gb….

Consult your manual. It can tell you a lot more than I can :)

you spelled MIKE DITKA wrong

No I wasn’t going for that name I was going as a prank name like Mike Hunt or Ben Dover

I need to save itunes and my music library on a flash drive. How do it do it?

how can i check if i have a usb 1.1 or not?

try putting files on it and see how fast the files go.

yes i have photoshop cs3 on mine. i can run it straight from there without installing it on the given computer

code vaseline!!!!

how’d you install it the flash drive??? cuz when i copy mines it’s turns into a shortcut only

USB media stick things that have space in a solid state fashion is my company name….

i hav an 8 gb cruzer contour with 18 mb/s writing speed and 25 mb/s reading speed. :)

my 2 gig sandisk cruzer got washed and dryed in the machienes and it still works fire..all my stuff was still on it

What Do You Think?
