Billy Joel at the Super Bowl

Yeah, I’m watching the Super Bowl right now (just about everything is entertaining in HD). I don’t wanna start a conspiracy theory, but… it sounded to me like Billy Joel’s voice (during the Star Spangled Banner) was being aided by some kind of electronic equipment? Not the whole song, mind you – he missed a noteat the beginning of the anthem. From that point forward, he sounded synthisized in certain parts. I’m sure it wasn’t a vocoder, but I really think his voice was enhanced as a contingency. I hope he’s okay; I love Billy Joel. I think he was auto-tuned:

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor for correcting pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise inaccuracies and mistakes and, due to its increasing use in modern music, has allowed many artists to produce more precisely tuned recordings. Its manufacturer, Antares, offers the processor in several plug-in formats as well as in a rack mount hardware solution.

Billy Joel sang at the Superbowl. First person to sing the national anthem twice for a Superbowl. I thought he hit a wrong note on the very first line. I’m not a singer and my ears aren’t musically inclined in any way but I’m glad that I wasn’t the only one that noticed it

As a Record Producer, and long time user of Auto-Tune, I more than agree. What you heard was AT set to a major key setting, while Billy was singing in a minor key. The result was the unnatural warble of the program trying to force his notes into a scale he was not singing in. Major oops on someones part!!

I wasn’t paying attention, but from the description, autotune would be a good guess. As cool as the technology is, I think it has resulted in some people (not Billy Joel) becoming singers when they have no business singing in public.

Agreed with Deepak, nice for the singers to have tools to help them out, but if you “ain’t got it” in the first place, don’t use hardware to fake it.

GO BILLY!

I heard it too. Cher used that in one of her songs.
Totally annoying (IMO).

Hendrix or Clapton on a wah-wah pedal sounds good, but the voice thing sounds weird to me.

yes, he was singing live thru a pitch corrector – it sounded just like my antares set just a bit too strongly.

most superbowls recently have had the anthem sung by singers who sang it in advance and then lip-synced on air [dixie chicks].

the halftime show lately has been actually performed – with the exception of janet jackson who can’t sing and dance at the same time.

it was interesting that billy sang live. i would think that the decision to sing live with a pitch corrector, or to lip-sync to a pre-recorded track, is something that the NFL producers ask for and work out with the artist’s management – depending on how powerful the artist is and how much they want the gig – and how much the NFL wants them.

the NFL is afraid of another “rosanne barr” or “carl lewis” national anthem moment. though they may seem to be weilding a dictatorial power, i believe they are correct to do so as it is their show. and there are a lot of people who wreck “the star spangled banner”.

the pitch corrector did sound funny though!

prince was awesome. a real performer who can sing and dance at the same time – there was a day when they all could do that or they didn’t get onstage.

As far as I can tell, nobody sings “live” at the Super Bowl. It’s all prerecorded and they lip synch. Besides, it’s extremely difficult to sing the Star Spangled Banner in tune in the original key in which it is written, or almost any other one. The primary reason I watched this year’s Super Bowl was to see Prince “perform” at halftime. With all that rain, he was lucky he didn’t get electrocuted.
