Best Buy Law Botch
- No related posts
Ten years ago, my girlfriend tried to return a CD to Best Buy
(don't worry, there is a point). The CD would not play because the
artwork was black, and our particular CD player read that as there
being no CD in the player (that is not the point). Consequently,
the CD would not play. She tried to return it to Best Buy, but
they told her it violated the copyright laws to allow her to
return it and get her money back. Here it comes: I then took the
CD to Best Buy and tried to return it. The lady told me the same
thing about copyright law violation. I mentioned that I was an
intellectual property attorney and that I just [so] happened to
have with me a copy of United States Copyright law. I then asked
her to indicate what particular section of this legislation gave
her the impression that what I was attempting to do was in fact
illegal. She called her manager over and he said to give me my
money back. I said I would rather have them keep the money if
they could show me to which “law” they were referring. At that
point they insisted that I take my money back. [Brett Trout]
