Ben Edelman on the Spyware Money Trail

Spyware remains a serious concern for anyone who uses Windows. If there weren’t big money in loading your computer with junk, most of the spyware problem would simply disappear. Ben Edelman has been following the spyware money trail for some time now. Publishing investigations into where spyware appears in legitimate advertising and how spyware uses advertising networks to make money for creators of spyware. Recently Ben is exposing companies who are piggybacking on the big pay-per-click networks like Google and Yahoo in what could be construed as fraudulent business practices. Recently Chris spoke with Ben about the spyware money trail and how spyware companies are actively engaging in fraudulent pay-per-click advertising schemes and why the companies who pay them seemingly don’t care where the clicks come from.

Good for you, Chris Pirillo (and Ben Edelman) for raising this issue. I earn a living removing spyware from people’s computer and have always detested the adsense ads that advertise rogue anti-spyware. Some of these rogue anti-spyware are chockful of malware and people actually buy them for $49.99 and then get spyware like Zlob and Win 32 Renos, real nasties on their computer….
I have clients whose harddrives who had to be reformatted to get rid of the residual registry changes and compromised Operating Systems. One woman’s computer was semi-okay until she cancelled her subscription to the rogue anti-spyware. While uninstalling it unleashed all the malware in quarantine and installed even more and her machine ended up as a zombie in a netbot. So I applaud you!!!

Ben does great work. We need more intelligent, tech savvy, morally based, researchers out there to keep this evolving tech world in check.

Ben is sometimes after worthy causes, but he cares more about publicizing himself than actually helping consumers. Get over yourself Ben.
