We had a similar sounding problem on a 2000 dns server just today. It somehow added some weird addresses as dns and deleted some that we needed. Only reason we found was because we tried pinging the name as opposed to the address and it came back with a reply from a different server, otherwise we would have thought it was the 'puter. Annywho, AOL wouldn't work. AIM wouldn't work. I couldn't even get to AOL.com. However, nobody else was having these problems. I could still connect to AOL through dial-up too (tried it). I worked on it for an hour and a half teusday night and another two hours or so wednesday when I got home from school before I got pissed and left it alone (it still wasn't working). I came back an hour or so later, checked it on a whim, and for some unknown reason, it worked. I didn't have problems with it last night, and it's running fine right now. I found out it came about after a network sharing connection with a WinME laptop - somehow it screwed everything local - but I could still access everything outside my network. The second time it was a problem with my firewall - somehow it decided that my own computer (on local connections) was seen as an inside hacker. hehe. computers, what can you do!?
