E-Mail:

Baffled Beyond Belief

This is the weirdest Internet problem I've ever had to face. I can get to the Web just fine. I can use FTP just fine. I can send and receive e-mail just fine. I can IM just fine. I can get to all of Lockergnome's Web sites through my browser (obviously), but I can't access anything else sitting directly on our Web server (mail, FTP, ssh, etc). It's like something's blocking my IP address, as both Jake and Furo can do everything on our machine that I can't do. I've reset the router, I've jacked directly into the modem, I've changed my MTU, I've tried four different computers, I've done everything humanly possible and can't figure out what the hell is going on. My apps work fine, but for some reason, Lockergnome's FreeBSD Apache Web server has a personal vendetta against my IP range tonight. Why?! The Web portion works just fine, but nothing else. Consider me unplugged.

Jeez… Just remember… its almost Friday…

Sounds like the problem lies neither with your connection, nor your server's. It's possible that your server's ISP/upstream provider is blocking for some reason. Call them in the morning, asking them to verify packet reception. Without further info, I can't give a more specific recommendation.

****, you might have to go out to the movies or something. Or read a book! OH THE HUMANITY

Reverse DNS problem?

Maybe it's not so much the computer as it is you - too much EMF vibes coming off you that the electronics get screwy when you use them but they're fine with someone else. Happened to me - my printer kept crashing & burning on me to the point that I needed a new one, but it worked fine in my dad's office 0_0

I've encountered a similar problem that I can access the websites residing on a particular server through a browser but when I tried to ftp in, I couldn't do it. The server was validating IPs in PARANOID mode (double-reverse DNS). A friend with a different isp had no problems. The problem was with the isp and reverse lookup/forward lookup.

scan disk and defrag.

Reboot. ;) What? That's not a helpful suggestion?

JameS may have the right idea but did you do a traceroute? Could be something inbetween making things whack.

It's probably my fault, I installed dsl or my pooter and it probably
f%$#@# up yours … i, for some reason, defy computer geekdom gravity … i make things happen that don't make sense …. if you don't believe me, ask Jason … stuff like this always happens when i'm around … (sorry i screwed up your computer, server, ftp thingie, or whatever) :-)

Chris,
Is the system you're trying to connect to running TCP wrappers on the serveices started by inetd? If so, TCPwrappers is probably running in “paranoid” mode and rejecting any connections that are failing the reverse lookup test.
If the server is running TCPwrappers, you might want to try unwrapping one of the services and see if you can connect.
If you can, the long-term solution is to have your isp make sure they have both forward and reverse entries for your IP address in their dns tables.
Good luck!

Its that bloody Veronica…last time she installed a modem my internet stopped working for months. (Although not paying my ISP didn't help.)

Let's just hope you aren't like me and turn into the Hulk when something like this happens. haha I believe last time my computer was acting up I causeed mass destruction to the local surroundings….

I had two similar problems one or two years ago. I found out it came about after a network sharing connection with a WinME laptop - somehow it screwed everything local - but I could still access everything outside my network. The second time it was a problem with my firewall - somehow it decided that my own computer (on local connections) was seen as an inside hacker. hehe. computers, what can you do!?

I SWARE>>>>>> I DIDN'T HACK YOUR SYSTEM!!!! okay chris, it is probably an affect of SLAMMER>>>> AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

Maybe your computer is possessed by the devil his self. If thats the problem I think I know ho to fix it. First you must find the tallest tree in the land and chop it down … with a herring. Well I hope that works. ehehe

Don't you just hate it when your computer doesn't respond when you want it to. Something that you've done a million times and now it decides it won't do that action anymore. I've lost many hair folicals this way. Hope you got the problem fixed Chris.

It's a vast right-wing conspiracy. Blame Bush.

I have a similar problem. I think it's firewall related.
My Linux boxes are now upset with my Windows 2K box — but only on my Lan (inside the Router). Everything on the Wan is fine.
I blamed it on you. Oh, BTW, have you been to the Sacramento Bee and seen their nifty sidebar tool with translucent tooltips? It's the kind of gizmoid you'd like on your site. http://www.sacbee.com/24hour/special_reports/columbia/bee/story/6069261p-7025226c.html

I was having a very similiar problem a few days ago with AOL. I have broadband (yes, yes, and still have AOL. It's easier to pay $15 a month than teach my mom how to use a completely new internet service, and I despise the way AIM handles IMs anyhow). Annywho, AOL wouldn't work. AIM wouldn't work. I couldn't even get to AOL.com. However, nobody else was having these problems. I could still connect to AOL through dial-up too (tried it). I worked on it for an hour and a half teusday night and another two hours or so wednesday when I got home from school before I got pissed and left it alone (it still wasn't working). I came back an hour or so later, checked it on a whim, and for some unknown reason, it worked. I didn't have problems with it last night, and it's running fine right now. So maybe all you have to do is wait.

I know what you can do ther's this guy that works over at TechTv that can give you a hand he's kinda short and where's glasses his name is, his name is, aaah! I keep forgetting oh yeah! he's also on TV, give him a call he'll help you out!

Who do you call???

It has realised you evil plans.
Go eat a twinkie weiner sandwich and deal lol

Did you fix this yet? We had a similar sounding problem on a 2000 dns server just today. It somehow added some weird addresses as dns and deleted some that we needed. Only reason we found was because we tried pinging the name as opposed to the address and it came back with a reply from a different server, otherwise we would have thought it was the 'puter.

Why don't you call Call For Help? They're good with answers :)
Or maybe Kevin Mitnick did it….

Why blame Kevin? Blame Canada!!!

He never updates us on what has happened. Always leaves us hanging with no wrap up. I still never heard about what he built for his latest computer. He started too then it just died a slow death. *I gotta get a life.*

Sure… blame Canada. Everything else is our fault. Oh wait a minute, we didn't have the hanging “chad” on our ballots….

What Do You Think?
