Auspicious Goats

“I just wanted to tell you that your 'Lockergome' site is beautiful. Everything is so perfectly placed. Admittingly, it is relatively simple compared to most sites lurking around on the Web, but it is just… beautiful. That is the only word for it. There are many sites that I have came across that a dying gorilla who has been taught sign language and is trying frantically to communicate to her handlers that she has just swallowed a chemical that is causing seizures could do a better job. I have been interested in Web design for some time now and I was wondering if you had any favorite resources that you could suggest. Something that may make it a little harder is that I have no training whatsoever. I only know what I've read from books and checking out the source code on other websites. I am a huge fan of yours and I would be most thankful if you could give some recomendations.” [Jason Johnson]

I learned from just looking at other peoples sites.

Over the past several years, I've taught myself web programing. The basic stuff, HTML, is very simple to learn and impliment in a nice, organized way. It sounds overwhelming at first, but it's really pretty simple…just find some good books. I like “The Complete Reference HTML 3rd Edition” by Thomas A. Powell. It's published by Osborne - McGraw Hill. That's the best book I've found so far. It covers the latest HTML, XTML and CSS standards, as well as stuff like .asp, .php and other server side scripting and the like. It goes from basic to advanced. Check it out. :-)

I've found that the implementation (HTML, CSS, DHTML, JavaScript, ASP, etc) isn't really the hard part. It's that sense of “design” that can give trouble. Especially if you're intent on not just ripping off someone else's site. What are some tips for making a site that's pleasing to the eye?

Just plaster naked chicks all over the site. Then noone will give a **** about your design skillz man! LOL!

I'll tell ya Chris, Jason's right. Your site has always been a good trend-setter for me. I always appreciate your “one-up technology” approach to things. It keeps me on my toes.

Check out Jeffrey Zeldman's site (www.zeldman.com). HTML and XHTML - the definitive guide 4th ed. (O'Reilly) is a good dead tree reference. Homesite (by Macromedia) is an HTML editor that allows folks to code in the way that works best for them. Oh, and view source is your friend.

hi,
I recommend reading zeldman.com, scripting.com, webmonkey.com, any of edward tufte's books. reading blogs done by people who are part of web culture (zeldman and dave winer's blog, scripting.com, are good examples) is also helpful.
two cardinal rules of web design come to mind:
1. know your audience.
2. keep it simple. this rule is stated in many different forms: don't use splash pages, don't misuse flash, don't use something just because you want to play around (e.g. blinking text, a horrible idea that is now thankfully not implemented in any of the decent browsers), etc.. but those are all examples of KIS.
good luck.
