Thomas is a 14 year old who recently tried to start a Tech blog to make money via AdSense. He didn’t do so well, but learned a lot along the way. He is passing along his tips for starting and maintaining a more successful blog.

  • Don’t think you are going to get rich quick. Blogging takes a ton of effort, work and time. You’re not just going to start a blog, write a few posts, throw in Adsense and make a million dollars! So keep that in mind. I do it because I enjoy it as well, not just for money. But of course, I’m only fourteen and I don’t need to feed a family.
  • Do choose a niche! And no, tech is not a niche, unless you are somebody like Chris. Tech is just too wide of a topic, trust me… I tried it. Also, “about me” is not a niche. Unless I’m your friend, I’m most likely not going to read your personal blog, and it certainly will not make money. Make a list of your top 5 things to do. Those are all potential blog topics. Blog about what you like and know, otherwise it will get boring and become a chore.
  • Do read other blogs in the niche you choose. This is very important. It keeps you up-to-date on the latest news in your niche, and will give you ideas for posts. A feed reader is a good way to do this. I would also recommend reading ProBlogger or LockerGnome for more tips on making money blogging.
  • Do comment on other blogs in your niche. This will help get your name out, and drive traffic to your blog. News Flash: “cool post man!” is not a comment. Comments are well-written tips relating to the post, or an answer to a question in the post or other comments. It’s a conversation.
  • Don’t rush into it. Plan ahead. This is probably the single most important thing when you start a new blog. Choose a name for your blog, get a domain, get a design and get hosting. I would also recommend writing a couple week’s worth of posts to get you started. Do all this before you launch. Also, budget in a little money. You’ll need it for hosting, and you may want to buy advertising.

lol he has said “i have been blogging since blogging wasent even a word” like 6 times

never really interested in “blogging” or keeping a diary. With the Internet, now if you “blog” it is out there for anyone to see, ex’s employers, investigators…

Yeah, you really don’t have any life at all.

Interesting.

how come im never watching him when he rants?

You were on the lab with leo, probably how i found you :) So being on tv is a good way to get attention of course.

I just setup my first blog i have only really done it as i have two weeks of school and lots of spare time to do it.
I have a response to one of the tips though which i think may be of some importance

“Don’t think you are going to get rich quick”

I haven’t setup my blog to make money, i think this is or could be the wrong mindset to be in when starting a blog, blog because you want to, because you enjoy doing it or because you love the subject/s your blogging about, you never know adsense might make you some money.

“Do choose a niche!”
I have choose tech but thats because i like tech and also so far enjoy blogging about it.

I think these tips are correct. The only think is why spend money when you don’t have to, if your only making a blog for you and a couple close friends. You don’t need to go out and but your own domain. Also The more often you post the better. Most people would rather see 3 small updates every day than 1 big update every weekk.

you can even Google “chris” and Pirillo is the first result up.

I pick up the remote by flipping it in a very unique way. It’s like juggling, except it never leaves my hand. It works by placing the index finger underneath the center of gravity, and pushing the back of the remote down with the thumb. The index finger is then pulled towards you and to the left, causing it to flip 2 ways: from back to front, and from top to down. It’s counter-clockwise flip both ways. It’s fun to do.

He makes a good point that Chris has touched on many times before and the vast majority of people have yet to learn: a lot of thought, planning, patience, and effort go into blogs. Even though blogs are filled with frequent and numerous posts, quality can not be sacrificed for quantity–an easy medium through which to express yourself does not make everything you write intelligent or meaningful.

As an added note: I continue to be astounded by how intelligent the young (early teens?) viewers and readers appear to be. Well done, you junior high school kids, you!

You do that too? That’s awesome!

Your awesome Chris, and a blessing to you tube

The reason I don’t blog is the same reason most of the population doesn’t blog: there are very few successes, and already a billion blogs nobody wants to read.

Oi, just finished listening to the cast of this post. Truer words have never been spoken.

I think one of the things that needs to be mentioned is the idea of sticking with it. If you go around commenting on tech blogs to participate, make sure you keep participating. Popping out there and saying something never to visit again is a good way to fall off the map.

I decided last month that I was going to do a real push and get back in to things. It’s been tough, but I’ve found that, like anything, practice is the best tool. Keeping with it is really the most difficult (and in the end, more rewarding) part of all of it.

lol i guess i am, i used 2 hve a tech blog like chris’ but who needs 1 when chris has his

these tips have been really helpful, i just have to say thank you because this has helped me and i have stepped into the world of blogging :)
