Are You a First Person Shooter N00b?
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
If you are new to playing first person shooter games, then this video is for you! Here are some excellent tips sent in by a community member to help newcomers (and old-timers!) to improve their gaming experience.
- When you are a beginner, don’t put yourself down if you get killed almost constantly. Use a kit that you can get good at quickly, mainly an assault rifle type weapon, and try to learn the maps you will play on most. Also, it is good to ask people who have played the game more than you about any tricks and tips to help you not die as much.
- When playing the game, you never want to stop and stand in one place for too long. This just allows people to sneak up and find you, and also allows snipers to find you and take you down that much easier. Moving targets are much harder to hit, and allows you to quickly dip and dive in and out of cover making it that much harder for the bad guys to keep their sights on you.
- Check behind you every few seconds. This is one of the most important tips to stay alive for a long period of time. If you don’t check back every few seconds, people will sneak up behind you and humiliate you in front of the rest of the group by knifing you in the back or just gunning you down without you ever being able to return a shot. If you check back, you may be able to surprise some one who is trying to sneak up on you and make them the one who is getting humiliated.
- Never, ever, ever Cheat! The one thing you can do to completely tarnish your reputation as a gamer is too cheat by using hacks and or glitches in the maps. This just makes the other players dislike playing with you, and makes you go through a lot of trouble regaining the respect you once had, and also gives you trouble when trying to find a game to play in if you become widely known as a cheater.
- Keep your calm. If you start to be damaged, even if it is very serious, don’t lose your calm. When you panic, you will tend to make another mistake, which normally winds up getting yourself killed. When you stay calm, you can look for cover, or even identify where you are being shot from and return fire, maybe even killing the person who was attacking you, or just go under cover to regain your composure and get ready to face off against your attacker.

I think I’ll always be a n00b when it comes to FPS. If only I had more free-time to devote myself to practicing. lol.

You’ll also find that as you get used to a game you’ll be doing things like shooting while running backwards, swaping weapon with ease and throwing grenades with precsion.
Check out online communities for your game. They’ll tell you lots about te speecific game. Like how in some games equiping yourself with a knife gives you stealth privilages on the radar.
Also, figure out weapon strenghts and weaknesses. ny gamer will tell you tat the shotgun is the way to go in close combat.
But also have fun. It’s a game. Enjoy it with ohers.

I’ve been playing FPS games for years and I stink as bad now as I did
then. I still have a blast playing them because, for me, dying can be just as fun as fragging someone.

First person shooters have never been my cup of tea. I always seem to get disoriented and sometimes it even makes me nauseous. I like Real Time Strategy games or games where you are viewing the action in 3rd person (from behind and above your character). World of Warcraft is my current favorite.

Another good tip is to play with friends. I used to suck, but when i watched and played with friends, it made the experience more fun.

I love first person shooters! I’m not really good at them though. My strategy is to run around until I find someone and then shoot away. More often then not I die… but at least I have fun!

I would like to add that using headphones instead of surround speakers can help you pick up audible input you otherwise would poqnot hear, like someone sneaking up on you, or reloaded their clip, or pulling out a knife.
Find someone that is really good and watch how they play. Follow them around or join their squad, and spectate them in observer mode when you are dead.
Keep statistics if possible, see how you are doing with your kill ratio if it is going up or staying the same.
Most but not all games have rock/paper/scissors gameplay, figure out what the best thing to do is in each scenario you encounter. Dont try to kill a tank with a grenade, or kill a sniper with a sub-machinegun at long range.

omg i hope you do the interview with major nelson, i will skip school to watch it :p….not really, those tips where great for starter’s and and the people that have great accuracy but don’t know the best way’s to stay alive-more successful……one other great tip is learn to strafe if you are getting shot at move back and forth if you are out in the open so that you are harder to hit.

If only I had this information back when I started Counter-Strike in the early 2000s. Just playing improves your skill too, even if you don’t notice it. You soon learn the tendencies of most players, and what weapons work best in different situations.

I agree, but another thing you can do, although cheep, is to camp inside your base so when someone goes for the flag u can kill them.

I like the “keep your calm” one, it can be especially helpful if you are killed constantly, as stated in number one. Losing your cool will definitely cause you to get frustrated and mad at the game, thus wanting you to stop playing.
Good tips, and don’t be a dirty rotten cheater like me :D

One of the main aspect’s of online FPS games that is really the downside, Is the cheating that goes on which can ruin your online gaming experiencing. So be sure to check for server’s in the server browser listing that is anti-cheat protected to make sure that you can play on a legitimate scale between other player’s.
Unfortunately even anti-cheat protected server’s can be bypassed by someone with sufficient experience in programming. There is a constant state of flux between anti-cheat company’s and the cheat creator’s behind the scene’s that most don’t recognize.
It’s something to be aware of if you are new to online gaming. Other than that you can meat people along the way throughout the gaming communities, and can be a great experience for meeting new friends.

What it really takes to become good, as with anything else, is practice. Seriously, I used to suck at FPSs, and I have found that after hours of practice, you become better.
It is really important to be able to use the plethora of weapons that are available in the game as well.

I really like first person shooters but my all time favorite genre is RPG games. I love to rome around a world and talk to someone to get a quest done. I also like the freedom and no rules in RPGs such as going anywhere you want. My favorite RGP is Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

I love playing FPSs such as UT2003 and UT2004 my problem is I don’t react fast enough and can’t coordinate the dodging and darting around hence I get wacked constantly it pisses me off so I get bored quick and only play for maybe 30 minutes maybe alittle more so I usually only play the Single player portions of the game anyway yeah you could say I’m a perpetual Noob and probly always will be

Excellent tips.
I remember my first person shooter game being Call of Duty. I also remember how hard it was to actually kill someone for the first time too. And I hate people who cheat cause they ruin the game for people and their own reputation so I hope people who cheat out there read this blogor even watch the video on youtube cause maybe they will learn something ;) Thanks again Chris.

I play alot of Halo 3. The staying in one place is good for statigic gameplay. If you can it can be a lot more kills than going head on. i would not have to look behind me every 2 seconds if i am on a cliff sniping the enemy. =P

ram CPU and GPU , these 3 are what a game depends on. if he has DX10 then the videocard is good (low memory? like 256 mb) maybe low ram. if you have 64BIT run the game in 64 bit mode because that will double your CPU’s preformance
