Are my Canadian Friends Getting an iPhone?
If you’re in Canada, you’ve likely heard about the outrageous amounts that Rogers is wanting to charge people for use of the iPhone. Some people are refusing to get an iPhone just because of this, while others are being quite outspoken. Here’s what some of my friends have to say about the situation.
Ouch. Sorry, Canada. – Hao Chen
I’m glad you saw this Chris, now you really know why I called you up to tell you how Canadians are not going to bother with the iPhone nor Rogers! – Michael Forian
Sucks. I’m on Rogers. :( – AJ Batac
Maybe the iPhone can be a positive thing to consumers to bring notice and hopefully positive change to the corrupt and greedy cell phone companies like Rogers. If I lived in Canada I definitely would not be buying an iPhone. Those plans are outlandish. :( – Chris Rodgers

I’m on Fido with an iPhone, which is owned by Rogers. My current plan is decent, but without unlimited data, the iPhone 3G loses its appeal entirely. – Granteezy
I agree with Granteezy. Will stick with my Blacberry Curve until I see the BB Bold. Then I will decide. Rogers data plans don’t look to appealing. – Stephen Kennedy via twhirl
Thanks for the links fotographic. This is exactly what I mean about the iPhone. I hope this creates a stir and people leave Rogers or really show their disgust with the cell plans and not buy the iPhone. – Chris Rodgers
Thanks for the info. I will hold off getting the iPhone, as much as I really would like to have one. I presently own Apple’s touch, so I will console myself with the features it has and use my conventional smart phone. – Nellie Root
I am an iphone user in Canada. I was eagerly waiting for the 3g iphone – even at this moment, I am tempted to get it irrespective of how ridiculously priced the plans are but I won’t because I don’t like being taken for granted and also, if I got for it, I am basically vountarily lowering my pants, bending over and asking Rogers to go for it – and do the same to others… – Kamath
gee I’ve only been saying this since Rogers first announced they were going tobe selling the iPhone but that doesn’t change the fact the Bell would have done the same thing if they were selling it. – Steven Hodson
If you live in Canada – or anywhere, actually – what are your thoughts?

An I-Phone in Canada is ridiculous. Only for the rich folk. Apple can shove the core, seeds, and Rogers up their collective pie.

Excited and preparing in Japan. Possible lineup in front of Softbank the night before just to make sure. Decent plan, nothing like the horror caused by Rogers to my Canadian friends. Some rumor of DoCoMo in Japan getting in on the action (they lost out on the deal) but still just a rumor. See more info on how things are going along (in English) at http://www.iphoneinjapan.com .

I’ll get it. I looked at the data plan, and it’s considerably cheaper than my BB plan. I’m paying about $150 CAD/m (after VAT + SAF + 911).
The iPhone plan will cost me about $100 CAD (after all VATs + addons).
Right now, I have 50MB of BB Data (compressed). I don’t know how much data I’ll use on the iPhone. I use lots of data on the BB.

I live in Vancouver BC, and I’m on rogers and there is no way in hell I’ll buy an iPhone from rogers with their rates.

I would def boycott buying an iPhone in Canada. Rogers needs to get the message where it hurts that consumers should not be taken advantage of. Does Apple have any comment?

I currently have an original, jailbroken iPhone and will NOT be getting the new iPhone due to the insane plans. I’m on a VERY good family plan right now, and it would require me to either break the plan, or pay a lot more than I am willing to pay. I’d rather buy a ‘no contract’ iPhone 3G for $599 and use it on my current plan.

Well, how about getting the iPhone if it’s unlocked? I know here in Australia they’re selling unlocked versions of it. As in, legally unlocked, not jailbroken.

Rogers has done their homework and they know that regardless of the outcry that most of those people will be lined up on release day to hand them the money. No competition = $$.

My friend wants one but won’t be getting one until the plan prices start to fall. I am planning on getting one because the plan I have is decent and the 3G network plan is only a bit more.

Apple should never have agreed to introduce the iPhone in Canada with Roger’s data avaricious data rate plans. I, for one, will not buy it unless rates become comparable to what U.S. customers pay foe unlimired data. Since Rogers will not see any GSM or 3G competition anytime soon, I’ll probably never own an Iphone.

I was going to be buying an iPhone with no hestitation. Now, I’m thinking of buying one in the U.S. and using it with my existing Rogers plan, without the data plan, up here. I can’t believe that Rogers took what could have been the best PR for them in years, and turned it into such a hideous example of how to treat your customers.
On the other hand, Rogers can do what ever they want until another company comes along and competes with them buy building a 3G network.

I don’t even use my regular cell phone enough to justify the plan price I’m paying now every month to Rogers, never mind paying what they want to provide service for an iPhone G3. I’m even thinking of going pay-as-you-go with my current phone and just using my iPod Touch for all of my mobile browsing (wifi), mobile audio/video needs and such. It’s just not worth it for me.
Now if I used my cell phone more often and Rogers had reasonable prices with unlimited data I would reconsider, but as it stands now, NO WAY!

I’m trying to decide. I have one on hold for July 11th. The one nice thing about Rogers is that they’ll let you change you rate plans as often as you like. I get the feeling that Rogers is going to be lowering their pricing over the next year as Bell/Telus bring out handsets like the RIM Thunder, RIM Bold, HTC Dream/Android, etc. I don’t think that the current plans will be the current plans for long…

I will not be buying an Iphone at Rogers rediculous rates . I am going to hold off and wait for Bell to bring out the Samsung Instinct. They plan to have an unlimited plan for around $50-$60 or so.. The Samsung does just about everything I need it to do..
