Apple iPhone SDK

Jeff called in to ask about the SDK coming out for the iPhone. He’s wondering if I know of any programs in development or coming out soon, that may enhance the iPhone’s functionability.
Here is a direct quote from Apple:
Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.
It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once — provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones — this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.
Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.
Steve
P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.

does anyone know if the warranty on the iPhone will change? Currently, any 3rd party applications will void all software & hardware waranty? This would be horrible because it would make apple not liable for any damage to the iphone at all?! any info- email me! spencer at spencerclaiborne dot com

Apple will keep this ball rolling, VERY SLOWLY, to generate as much revenue as possible. You give the masses just a little taste of something good and then you tell them “I know you’re thirsty, but you’re going to have to wait until EVERYONE has had their first sip!”
No need for dramatic marketing now. The toy is in an open chest and the kids know where to find it. My advise for Apple though is this though:
Let the kids play with the toy – let them get to know more about how it works so they can find NEW ways to KEEP having fun with their toy! If a kid is bored with their toy, they put it away in their closet, never to be seen or touched again (until it’s time to throw it away).

While I can’t mention anything specific Chris, I will say to keep your eyes (and iPhones) open in the next few months. Another thing I will say, it’s a good choise you made not to “jail break” yours. nuff said

Well, I would like to see some flash in the iPhone SDK. I think that such a powerful(and big, 8 or 16 GB) does not have flash. Its like a computer not having Microsoft Word. Its just stupid. Also, 3G!! I have wi-fi at my house, but when i have to use Edge, I just die. I had AOL a few years ago, so I know what slow Internet is. EDGE needs to go. Lastly, put some more apps on it. I know I’m getting killed for this, but I think that the iPhone needs some more apps and more in depth apps. For example, weather. It tells you the current temperature, and the next 7 days temperature and how the day will be. Well, some people want more. Like how the pressure is outside, the humitidy, and so on and so forth. Also, a great app would be a sports app. Like having the scores of every game with the touch of your finger

Hello Chris! I found this blog post very interesting! Do you think that the iPhone SDK release will come out tomorrow? If so, do you think they will charge for the update? I have a feeling they will charge $5 for every program downloaded through iTunes.

No, it’s free. However, you can get an iPhone developer account for $99… Not sure what for, probably to put them on the App Store.
But I’ll probably just keep my apps to myself :D
You also need a Mac.

Yes. To put them in the app store. I like the fact that the developer can choose the price for their app too. Plus macs are good. Some people may be critical (nothing bad about that) about this whole SDK thing but this will sell like…some product that generates high revenue. I mean the Apple sold over 4 million iPhones in its first couple of months…thats grand.

I’m downloading it now, luckily Apple got it’s servers back up… If I make an App it will probably be for a Forum system I designed using PHP, Apache and MySQL; and I’ll make it free…
I’ll probably just end up making my own games.
Man this is so exciting…
P.S. I have an iMac 2.4GHz 20″ with 4GB of RAM.

This guy bugs me so DANG much but at the same time I think he is quite awesome. HUGE ego though which sort of drives me insane. With the fact that he thinks he knows everything and puts his head on his computer. Sorta reminds me of myself. HA HA.. must be why he bugs me so much.
