Apple iPad Finally Makes Its Debut!
The long-anticipated “tablet” from Apple is now official! I’ve held off on making assumptions and guesses prior to the official announcement today. There was just TOO MUCH HYPE already on the Web – much of it laughable. I had my own ideas, of course, as to what the iPad would include, and I’m happy to say I wasn’t too far off! This slick, gorgeous little device is sure to make a lot of people very, VERY happy. However, there are some drawbacks that I see, as well.
The device has a 9.7 inch display, weighs only 1.5 pounds, and is only half-inch thick! It’s powered by a new chip, a 1GHz A4 (Apple’s very own). You can get one with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB worth of space. It supports Wi-Fi, has an accelerometer, and has a built-in speaker and microphone. The screen is a full multi-touch (capacitive) screen. Battery life is purported to be a whopping 10 hours. In addition to Wi-Fi, it will have a 3G option from AT&T.
Therein lies the first gripe. AT&T? Seriously, Apple? AT&T has had enough problems handling 3G with just the iPhone and iPod Touch. Why do we have to be forced to use them for 3G service yet again? I can guarantee you that a whole lot of people are going to be very unhappy about that part. Heck, I’m already reading things from some people, claiming they won’t even bother with the iPad, simply due to this. A vocal minority, I’d assume.
Another huge gripe is the fact that the iPad does not come with an SD card slot, nor a USB port. However, you can of course purchase a separate adapter for SD media reading (their Camera Connection Kit). People want, need, and EXPECT their portable devices these days to have those two very basic features out-of-the-box. They don’t want to have to shell out even more money for adapters to make things happen.
The biggest omission is… a camera. Why they didn’t put one on the iPad is a little beyond me. Price and service are what largely separate the iPhone from the iPod Touch – but this is nowhere near a notebook replacement without a camera. A Kindle replacement, yes – an iPhone replacement, no. It’s an iPhone with a bigger screen.
On the upside, the price tag is far better than many expected it would be. The WiFi-only version, with 16GB of memory, will cost $499. The 32GB version will be $599, 64GB will be $699, and with 3G from AT&T, it will cost up-to $829. The good news on the 3G front is that you won’t need a contract. You’ll sign up for a monthly plan (cancel anytime). You can choose a measly 250 MB of data transfer for $15.00, or an unlimited plan for $29.99. That pricing – on both fronts – is a whole lot better than what I had figured it would be.
Another great piece of news is that nearly all of the existing iPhone apps will work on the iPad immediately. Apple also released a brand-new SDK today, so that devs can get busy creating new apps specifically for the iPad. The beautiful thing is that from now on, new apps that are created will work on either the iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad! I can just imagine the developers in our community salivating over this fact (already pounding away at their keyboards to come up with the next hot application)!
The iPad also comes with a new app called iBooks as well as an iBooks Store! Apple partnered with five publishers to make books available for sale through the iBooks store. The iBooks support the ePub format, and allows readers to casually flip through pictures, video, and other inline graphics.
I admit it – I will be getting an iPad. It’s one thing to read about it and watch all of the coverage. It will be another thing entirely to actually get my hands on one, and test it myself. I’ll reserve final judgment on the product until that time.
What are your thoughts so far on Apple’s newest gadget? Get it or skip it?
Oh, and have you joined the community on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube yet?

If the iPad sells at the right prices I might actually look into buying one of these. I’d pay $500 for a model that supports flash, silverlight and lets me watch Hulu!

So, basically, it’s an oversized iPod Touch. Woohoo. I’m certainly underwhelmed. And the fact that they’re using AT&T again as sole carrier is ridiculous.
Might as well wait till they come out with version 2.

Hmmm… Looks like another under baked, “user friendly” apple product to me (think iPod). Not sure about this one.

ATT? UGH!!!!!!! cant stand them. even tho the 29.99 price is not bad for wireless isp.
no camera? no usb?
eh. i stand by my laptop.
i only purchase gadgets that i really need, not just cuz its kewl to have them. i basically feel the same way about the iphone. i dont like phones, period. i communicate with email or im only. phones are too intrusive. people tend to talk loudly and longly, thinking this will convince me of their point of view. with email, its all there in front, theyve said their piece and i can delete them at will.

Pass. Too little for too much. Add a 3G adapter and data plan to any typical netbook and you’d have a better, more adaptable solution you’d not have to add a keyboard to.
Flash and sizzle.

I have resisted Apple this and Apple that (sorry, BB is solid for “have to” work and apps.) BUT, was looking for 10″ or less note/net book WITHOUT Atom processor for travel. What exists without that processor is expensive. Must admit that IPad does the trick for a traveler who likes movies, internet, etc., but still needs to do real work as well. Price is right. We all know that IPad II (2) will be out a few months later to cure all the wrongs of the initial release….but doubt “we’ll” postpone the buy. Yes, ATT 3G is not the best but their international unlimited data for a fixed low monthly has been great for BB. I use notebook mostly for travel (and BB tethers), so my needs are perhaps more limited than other users. Just my two cents…bye all.

Overall appears to be a great product. However the deal BREAKERS are:
1. No onboard webcam (but it has a mic)
2. AT&T, no way, not now, not ever, worst service I have ever had. Temporairly switched to StraightTalk to await next gen of Android, happy so far as it cut my cell bill in HALF.
3. USB 2&3 must be onboard in today’s products.
4. Must support SD card options.
Given the above 4 items I will reach for my wallet. Could it be that they are holding these back for future growth (& price increase) options? yah think?

GI’m vary disapointed in the iPad, I thought it was going to be more like anet book, but it can,t even run multiple apps at once. My 700mhz Moterola Android phone is capable of that much, so I can surf the web, or work on office documents while listening to music, an audio book, etc. I think that, when people have this functionality. On their cell phone, but not on the iPad, it will effect their purchasing decision. At leest Flash will not be a problem for long as, Adobe is bringing it to the Android phones, and to the Iphones and I touch. Therefore, it should be available for the iPad, when its released later this year.

I was not really thinking of getting one of these but all I can say is WOW! now. I really, really love what I see the ibook reader, touch screen and price got me. I do think a camera and SD reader is a real miss but other then that it’s a Winner with me. I think I might wait for the 2nd Gen. but it’s not going to be easy to do.

What a dissappointment. There was so much talk about Apple finally releasing a TABLET platform and finally bringing a hit product that would open up that market… But this isn’t a tablet at all. This is an oversized iPod Touch with a free Kindle app – a boutique, designer Kindle for people who don’t care about getting real value for their money. And believe it or not, I’m an Apple fan. Where is the precise pen input so that you can enter text or do actual hi-resolution sketching, navigation, program control? And where is the real OS that allows for more than just glorified little web applications and 99 cent dock widgets?
Where’s the support for SD cards? Who would want to spend this much money and have so little storage room and no possibility for expansion? It doesn’t take long to fill up a 16 or 32GB hard drive if you buy a few movies and a couple TV series from the iTunes store. And since they won’t let you re-download anything, you can’t just delete it. Since it would cost only pennies to add an SD port, the reason for an SD slot omission seems clear to me: blatant greed. If they were to include a built-in SD card. no one would shell out hundreds of dollars extra for the 32GB or 64GB models when they could buy the base model and get the exact same amount of space for 1/4 the price via SD (and less in the future), with the ability to add more and more as SD capacity increases.
No camera? how much more stingy could they possibly get? With the ipod touch, they claimed that a camera just wouldn’t fit inside at the last minute, filling in the camera port with a bit of plastic. But there’s clearly plenty of room inside this thing, since it’s just an ipod touch with a larger screen, a better processor chip, and perhaps a different layout on the main circuit board.
As an e-book reader to combat kindle, it’s great – except for the fact that it should be priced at around $100-$200 – not $500-$800 (when they add 3g.) 64GB should be standard, instead of continuing to create completely artificial, tiered feature sets in order to gouge people for a higher profit margin, based on no real value.
it’s pretty, if uninspired, offering very little innovation compared to an ipod touch – a fact that betrays its lack of any real additional capabilities. You can’t really use it in new ways (except for an ebook reader) so there’s no reason to rethink the design for new usage patterns. I’m really surpised that people are so excited about this thing when it’s such an overpriced let down made of mostly hype.

RIP Kindle – the overpriced Albatross! $425 for a 9.7in Kindle is a scandal. If I could afford it, I’d get the iPad tomorrow which does so much more. Sadly, I can’t afford one and I must be content in vicariously enjoying it. Good on you Steve for showing the way once again. We’ll have a slew of cheap knock offs from China soon.

Watching Twitter, I can’t imagine any women were involved in the “naming committee” for the iPad. The number of “sanitary napkin” posts — all from women — is quite amazing. What’s also amazing is, as a dumb guy, I hadn’t thought about that.
I have an iPhone 3G which I love except AT&T which we all know sucks. (I do miss Verizon). If I were still commuting into NYC on Metro North everyday I’d seriously consider getting a 3G version, however…
I think many of us are suffering from the over-hype leading up to the “Moses Tablet” (Verizon, camera, video conferencing, etc, etc, etc) and what we have the morning after is a big (nice – very nice) iPod Touch.

OK, maybe I’m looking at this from a different perspective.
I was thinking about purchasing a kindle DX same size and for that matter price point (at the bottom end) and will get a HELL of a lot more use out of this device.
The fact that I can port ALL of my current kindle content over (kindle app for iPhone) read PDFs in their original format (tech reference material) buy from B&N if i so choose. oh yea and I can watch movies or what ever else I choose to on this thing.
I figure the absence of flash will only further propagate the next version of html (you tube) and make the need for flash a diminishing asset.
I personally will love to see the hacks that come out for this thing and will be using my iphone for tethering to this device. so for the price of the 16g with 3g I can now get the 64g and enjoy much more of my content.

I have no need nor desire to purchase one and I think your comments at the beginning of the iPad Wave posting say a lot about our consumer mentality. In any event, I did hear a possible application for the iPad which does appear to have merit. If the unit has the capability to download and store college textbooks, then I could envision an entirely new approach to attending school. Just imagine, no more books to be lugged from class to class as well as with a halfway decent search engine, textbook reading might become a little less tedious. That of course is just the tip of the iceberg and I wonder if Apple is thinking along those lines.

I am not paying $500 for an over sized iphone. Apple needs to understand that their marriage with at&t is a doomed one and should just abandon ship while they still have a market share. i will just stick with the Nexus one and my kindle, at least till Apple wakes up and dissolves it,s deal wit AT&T.

I waited (and hoped) for Apple to come out with a tablet. With iPod touch and iPhone out I thought Apple would wow me. Instead the device totally underwhelms. No USB. no SD card, no camera (or iChat), and 3G from AT&T. (Ihave been praying for a Verizon iPhone). Pricing was about where I expected it to be for an apple product, however, I didn’t expect the iPad to offer so little in the way of new features. I guess I can wait for Ver.3.0 or later and see if Apple will up the ante on features and offer 3G with a different carrier.

Not excited. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure it’s swell. But I can’t for the life of me think of a single reason to get it. I’m not saying it’s bad but they jam packed the thing with….things I will never need.
With as much as I love electronics I still won’t go completely electronic and therefore five hundred dollars for a large device that does a lot of things I won’t do on a computer….quite frankly makes no sense.
And the webcam….couldn’t care less. I don’t use mine, wish I didn’t have to have it. SD card reader….if it had a USB port that wouldn’t be a problem. So my only problem would be the USB.
But that’s me. Totally personal biased way of looking at it. :D Give me a regular book that I can hold and turn the pages of over the iPad anyday.

My reaction to the iPad: Meh.
I mean, it looks good and I’m curious to check one out but, ultimately, I don’t have any use for it.
I’m more than likely not going to get one in the end as I already have a suitable platform for mobile computing: my MacBook Pro.
And, IMO, it’s not really that great if you only intend to use an iPad as an electronic book. Something like a Sony Reader would be a better choice if all you want is an electronic book as it is far more energy efficient and doesn’t cost as much.

Waiting on 2.0. Skipping for now because no SD slot, no camera and hell no to ATT.
But as someone previously mentioned , once the “I have to have it but I don’t know why” crowd have spent their money, Apple will then add the features that will make it what we really want. So I’ll wait and play with the Mini version I all ready have called the ‘touch’.

I like what I see. Will I buy it? Probably not. Big Probably not. Mainly because I don’t have the need for it at this point. Am I shattered about it’s short comings? NO! I think this will be a great product and should not be compared to a netbook or notebook at all. Chris Pirillo is the only one so far who has made perfect sense of this and looked at it with an open mind. If you hate Apple and are one of these people who don’t buy or look at stuff that isn’t “Linux, or Windows” then at least try and see the market that this may fit into and the people in that market that it may serve well too. Not everyone needs the features that all of us geeks need and believe it or not there is a market for simplicity and not everyone wants raw speed and size. Apple understand this and do well from selling products that are easy and generally stress free to people. The annoying thing with most “Elitist Geeks” is that they think because something doesn’t suit them, then it must automatically be terrible and not worthy. The old argument of Apple Mac’s pricing compared to a build your own. Or is that even an argument. I know my Mum will use this sort of product to death. I probably wouldn’t. However like Chris Pirillo I never wanted an iPhone, and I never thought I’d leave XP for OS X. Who knows I may get Android next, or maybe even an iPad, or maybe even Windows 7.

i think apple should push for collage students, because it is cheap (for apple) it can take notes (with the word processor mentioned in Chris’ video) and you can play games on it. but I’m a little skeptical on it replacing the iphone. mostly because it is to big to fit in your pocket, and you want to carry it around all day? you also can’t call on it (not including VOIP) but also the lack of a camera is a real downside for most people, i will be interested in the second gen, to see what they improve and add. but the real measure of the success or failure of this product will be when people start to give reviews, and if the 10hr battery life is true…

Again another placed item on the market some will like and some will hate by Apple….Names like SONY and APPLe are so riddled with products that seem great but in truth when you use them and have to rely on them for some more than gadgets or specialty items (graphic applications) they fail misserable or are rubble in the closet in a short time…..yep i see the Ipad as another wow what the heck was that anyways type deal…

First of all I have to say that the iPad is pretty sweet however, there are some issues…
First – I maintain(as I did with the iTouch) that making two devices that are 99% identical is a logistical and tactical error. I simply cannot see any logic in maintaining two seperate distribution, inventory and price schemes… just silly. The lack of connectivity when wireless is not available was always a major drawback on the iTouch.
Second – for the iPad to be completely useful, it MUST have a connection, period. At $499 it is affordable and competitive with both the netbook and laptop arena, I am sorry but at $630 with still being required to pay for true connectivity it simply isn’t. I can get a netbook for $350, or a full blown laptop for $550… (the price of connectivity outside of WiFi is a wash – $30 to AT&T or $50 or US Cellular, my company is negligiible… )
Had they made a single device, with 3G capability at the $499 price mark my buying it would have been a shoe in, but…. the extra $130 (which seems excessive by the way) pushes the price point just to high… add in to that, no flash, and lack of support in other areas and I think I will have to take a pass on it…

No multi-tasking, no camera, no voice control, no handwriting recog, no USB, no SD reader, poor name, AT&T — gosh I expected better from Apple. Might make a great e-reader but is too large for just that and the announce prices for ebooks are much too high.
Maybe some hacks and version 2.0

At $629 for a 16GB 3G device(IPAD), you are too close to a Macbook, and too far above the newest higher-end ultra-thin netbooks like the awesome 12″ Asus Eee PC 1201N Seashell (at $489, it is a steal). I do give Apple props on the pricing of the unlimited data plan they got from AT&T ($29.95/mo), but as a long-time iPhone/AT&T user, I view the network possibilities with a jaundiced eye). Too bad I can’t get that plan for my 3G card!

I just have to say I am disgusted by the iPad. I had made predictions about what it would be, and I am truly saddened to be right. They expect me to get this instead of another slate/tablet when it has no multi-tasking? Do we really want a bigger ipod touch, which is what this is? I was hoping the iPad would have a touch screen friendly OS X on it. It is 4:3 which makes video watching on it silly.
It has no flash so you are stuck with a full-sized mobile browser which is pretty lame. What’s worse, is that people will buy it and Apple won’t learn anything. We need to boycott this device. This is supposed to be a netbook replacement.. what a joke. This device does not bridge the gap between smartphone and notebook.

(Please don’t take this seriously.)
I have a few alternate names for the new iPad.
iGrab – A BIG touch.
iFondle – ditto
MaxiPad – and they can rename the touch, MiniPad. And the the carrier service could be called Wings. (MaxiPad with Wings)
iZac – Someone suggested this a few weeks ago, but I think they’d have a problem because that was already used in a Futurama episode for their Loveboat spoof.
I’m not going to rush out and buy one, but if they are used as giveaways at the trade shows I attend, I do hope I win one.

The IPad will be a huge success in the long run. as they are rolled out and people can actually hold them and play with them, It will be come apparent where theses are to go. With the ap store new uses will be invented that we’ve never dreamed of..
Many different industries will find uses for them, either natively, or with specialized programing.
To judge something by only a short demo, and very few people getting to actually hold isn’t fair to either Steve Jobs or the product .
I think this will be the longest wait we’ve had in a long time waiting until it hits the stores,, that will be the final judge, who and how people use will be the finial judge..

I will get one. My common sense says wait, my technolust says buy. My bank balance will probably have the final say ;-) I imagine most of the hardware shortcomings will be fixed in later editions.
I will purchase the dock – 40 years of working with IT has made me a better typist than gesturer. That will give a USB connection – I’m which will give me more.
I have a phone with a camera now. I do not anticipate this will replace that in the foreseeable future. What it will do is lighten my load for meetings, etc. I’m planning on getting the Wi-Fi version. I’m sure when I upgrade, I will have several grandchildren in line to inherit this one.
