When did this occur?
Have you contacted Apple?

The prohibitory sign shown here indicates that the kernel could not progress because it:
* Can’t find the root device
* Failed to run fsck (verify disk)
* Can’t find the startup disk driver
Is your hard drive fried?
Do you leave it on all the time?
This could be the problem, Chris!
Hope this stuff helps!

Ouch. Hear any clicking sounds?
I’m sure the rest of your mob can suggest all the good tricks to try in terms of booting up. If nothing works, you’ve got a dying or dead drive, and I hope you’ve backed up your data.
It could just be a startup glitch, a misplaced bit on the drive that is preventing the computer from finding it as a valid boot drive. That could be a simple thing.
OR your drive is on the highway to hell and you’ve got to extract it ASAP, get it into an enclosure, and comb through its bits for nuggets of precious data like some kind of nerd 69′er.
There’s a lot of stuff it could be. More diagnostic info plz.

Hold command+V and reboot it to boot in Verbose mode and show what it says. That’ll be a bit more descriptive than a no sign.

Well Mr. Pirillo, seems that your famed Apple Product failed. That never happens to Windows Computers, if Windows has a problem at least it will tell you what went wrong and not just display a useless symbol. It’s about time all of your Vista bashing catches up with you. Good luck trying to fix you beloved Apple product. I hope all doesn’t go well for you.

HAHA. i hope you are happy now. this is why you should run a pc. you KNOW what the fuck your computer is doing if you do it right. not run vista right out of the box like you did dumbass. hope all your macs catch on fire and you are forced to use a pc and lose all 10 of your fans.
so go fuck yourself chris, and maybe fuck your wife too. shes probably lonely.

Hey Chris,
Have you tried booting in to verbose mode: Press and hold Apple-V button while pressing Power button. Anything in the output that might shed some light?
Chances are you may need to boot via the Leopard DVD and run disk utility to check for issues (e.g. disk permission errors, etc.)

Maybe it can’t find the OS
But if that is the case, it will show a Macface on a folder with a question mark

It means your computer can’t find the HD
When you see the folder with a question mark, it means that it can see the HD but can’t find an OS on the HD. Similar, but not your issue.
When you see what your seeing, it means your computer can’t even see the HD.

Dette

Hmmm I have had that.. I am trying to think what happened.
I believe it was something bad with the Kernel or a driver/hardware issue.
Try booting with Verbose Mode which is done by holding command + v on boot I believe and try and see what the problem is, it will tell you whats stopping it from booting
you might also want to try booting into safe mode which is done with command + x

Try booting from your install discs that came with the computer by holding down option during boot, in the installer, run disk utility to see if the hard drive is being recognized, if it is, attempt to repair it, then archive and install, if it’s not recognized, thenyou probrably need a new hard drive, hope this helps.

3) destroy Mac install media

This is not a boot error, somebody modified their system and changed the boot logo. It can be done with any logo within a certain size and color constriction.

This screen essentially means that the firmware was not able to find a blessed OS on any hard drive attached to the computer.
Usually it is advised to boot from the Installation DVD/disc to see if it is possible to rescue the HD with Drive Utility. If that fails, Drive Genius is the next utility I try. Tech Tool Pro is included as part of the resource disc included with any new purchase, but I prefer Drive Genius.
Good Luck!

Well, Im not sure how oyu expect us to guess whats wrong with it from a picture. Tons of things can cause this. A pic doesnt do anything. All we can do is guess. Whatwas it doing? How far into boot does it get? Can you boot from teh Leopard dvd holding the “C” key and running disk utility from hte boot dvd? It fixes almost ANYTHING.

Pull out the drive and put it into OWC’s Mercury On The Go external 2.5″ enclosure, pull the data off onto another puter/drive, pop the HD back in the laptop and start from scratch.
Either that or, if you have Time Machine running, wipe without abandon and restart from there.

hold down option during start up and u can choose the disk u wanna boot to. That screen happens when trying to install multiple OS’s or if you chose a CD/DVD as the start up disk then ejected it, the computer couldnt find it during startup and that screen appears.

I’ve seen this before on various macs… Sometimes, this is also presented with a broken folder icon. It means that you (or another program/installer) has changed the place of the System/Library or Applications folder (system folders of Mac Os X). If those are changed from their original place, mac os x can’t boot and then shows this icon.
You can try to boot from the Mac OS X installation DVD, then you can try to repair the permissions/the disk with Disk Utility.
Hope this can help a bit ;).

Is your computer an apple made product? Are you running Mac OS on a Windows Based Machine? If so, It will be because Mac OS X doesn’t support any processor other than Intel. If your computer is Apple Made (eg. Macbook Pro) Then I would try booting up on your Mac OS X Install Disk by Holding C at startup. And Re-Install Mac OS X with the options to keep all files that are currently on mac os x. (Select Archive Files in the install options)
Hope This Helps,
Jo

windows, linux, and even OS X boot errors can most of the time, be corrected using Spin Rite. I know it is a paid for program, but it’s saved my bacon, and MANY others. I don’t fully understand all that it does, but it WORKS!
http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm
Check it out! You’ll have to temp. add your OS X drive into a windows machine to use the program, but then it’s back into your apple, and BACK TO BOOTING NORMAL!
