I've gone years without coffee...but I do love the flavor. The only effect coffee has on me is positive.
I have trouble with dairy products. As a child the family remedy was to mix half with coffee and half milk. The coffee acted like a predigestive and allowed me to drink and digest the milk. I still have problems with dairy, but in addition to coffee helping with dairy products I found that it helps me with my sinus problems (so do hot peppers).
Coffee has some wonderful benefits and minerals for many. For those with Asthma regular coffee has been shown to have good effects - http://www.cosic.org/health/benificialeffects/
Coffee has been shown to have antioxidant substances. Cancer research has lately focussed on coffee as a way of preventing and helping to cure cancer of the colon. Diabetes research has lately focussed on coffee as a preventative, and a way to help those who have Diabetes.
For me coffee also helps with muscle spasams. Coffee has minerals in it that my body has trouble absorbing. It's easier to absorb those minerals via a liquid then a tablet and coffee works well for that.
All of these are positive effects for coffee drinkers. But yes, coffee is a stimulant and for some coffee, tea and even chocolate can adversley effect them. Drinking to much of anything isn't good for you, coffee include.
No Chris...more bad news for you. If the reason you stopped coffee is because you can't stop over dosing on it....then you will do the same with tea, cola's, chocolate, what ever. To much tea has adverse effects, to much of ANYTHING has adverse effects.
Chris, your just going to have to take control of your life, your habits and you will have to say when. Enough is enough. Set a limit on how much of anything you will eat or drink at one time. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but reality sometimes sucks.
Hey, I still have dairy problems and what do I do sometimes? Eat ice cream or sour cream dips. Effect= cramps unless I drink coffee with them.....which at a party I tend not to do. It's bad for me, I love dairy and it doesn't love me. So yes, I know it's not always easy to do the right thing for your body.
But please Chris, don't blame coffee. For many coffee is the tasty, aromatic, warm miracle drink.

I was just drinking too much. I drink herbal tea or decaf every once in a while. Usually a glass of orange juice gets me going in the morning.

Good luck Chris! I got off coffee a year ago after I read “Caffeine Blues”. This is the smartest decision you can make, in spite of some of the responses that I'm reading here. Too much of ***anything*** can be detrimental, whether it's sugar, alcohol, caffeine, etc.. You can do it!
Please don't listen to the "why are you doing this, you're going to die anyway" comments. These folks don't care about you or your health.

Chris, hang in there. Some people will die after a lifetime of dieting, abstaining from many of the simple pleasures of life: A good cup of joe, a glass of wine, a fine cigar .. etc... giving all this stuff up does not guarantee a longer life (you could die tomorrow). Then again.. some people's simple pleasure in life is the gift of narcissism.

YouÂ’re going to die someday no matter what big guy. If you miss the buzz, I suggest ginseng capsules (they can have a mild stimulating effect) and green tea. Green tea still has a little caffein (10-20% of a cup of java if memory serves) but you supposedly get a lot of good anti-oxidants in the bargain.'
