AdSense Secrets
It's no Secret: I love AdSense. I talked about it at last year's Gnomedex, and I feel even better about AdSense now. If you didn't get a copy of today's USA Today, you'll have to picture a nice, juicy quote from yours truly splashed on the front of the Money section. I suppose if you're going to be in an international paper, that's the section to be in. There's an online version of the AdSense article as well, but it doesn't have the same impact.
There's an AdSense eBook out there that speaks the plain ol' truth, although its value is underestimated. I personally would have sold it for 10x as much, but that's because I know if you read it, you'll make 100x as much with AdSense as you are today. I've got a few more ideas I'm kicking around, including doing an AdSense afternoon seminar up here in Seattle. I'll keep you posted. Until then, read the eBook:
This is a real, recent screenshot of my AdSense stats page. With Google's permission, I'm able to reveal how much I'm making with AdSense. But they've asked me to keep details of my CPM and CTR private, so I have blacked them out in order to comply with Google's terms of service. I'm not a renegade and I value my relationship with Google too much!
And if you haven't yet signed up for Google AdSense yet, get going – sign up for Google AdSense now.
Be sure to catch Joel's AdSense Seminar, too!

Google AdSense , commonly just AdSense , is an ad serving program run by Google . Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image and, more recently, videoAdSense Secrets ~ Chris PirilloIt’s no Secret: I love AdSense. It truly does *seem* amazing… Chris, is this for real, or some kind of scam?

In the USA Today article, the author mentions a competitor, Kanoodle. Anyone have any experience with them? How do they pay in comparison to google adsense? Also, are we legally allowed to have both Kanoodle ads and google ads on the same page? Inquiring minds want to know.
The other comment I wanted to make was about an idea that came to me after the tsunami tragedy. Google adsense makes it EASY to contribute to charities without much work. Follow me if you can. For each google adsense publisher, you have to put up the google ad code that has a unique ID embedded in it — it's unique in that each publisher has their own number. Say, for instance, the American Red Cross signed up with google adsense as a publisher, and you want to contribute ad revenue for one day or two to the American Red Cross (ARC). The only thing you would need to do is to get the ARC's google adsense ID number and replace your number in your ad with the ARC's number. Let it sit for a day or two (or however long you want it) and every clickthrough will be rewarded to the ARC instead of you. When you want to stop “contributing” you change the number in the ad code to yours. Doesn't this sound like a great method of contributing? It's probably been done already, since it's such a simple idea.

According to the AdSense TOS as I've read it, you can't have two context sensitive ad banners on the same page, and I haven't seen anything like context sensitivity in the Kanoodle ads yet; jut more of the same old ads that don't really relate directly to what's on the page. You can see the sort of ads I'm pulling at http://foo.ca/wp for example. I like the Kanoodle approach, showing you what the ads clicked were billed out to the advertiser at, and showing the 50% that you make. They also individually approve each page the ads will appear on, so you can't just drop the ad code in your forum posts, etc.
I saw this book linked somewhere recently, and I can't imagine it telling me anything I haven't discovered through trial and error… I've been paying attention to popular old entries on my web log and placing ads specifically there, etc. I'm also careful to avoid certain words as much as humanly possible. For instance, the word “blog” is pretty diluted in adsense, and you're unlikely to get anything that people will click on recently.
I've also started a number of niche, targeted sites that help focus keywords into central locations, just to see what happens…. The results have been interesting.

I always wonder, if the money is so great from something, why do people still have to sell books about how to make money from that something?

This is a good book if you've never seen AdSense before. If you're an experienced AdSense user, then I suggest you stay clear.

Put AdSense ads on the top and bottom of all your web pages and make them look like text ads. If you want to make $500 a day in AdSense revenue then you're going to have to get lots of traffic. No traffic –> no money.

I personally don't feel like putting adsense on my site. The book looks great (although the site for it looks like something for another wannabe scammer IMHO – don't take me wrong, but a slightly more professional look that doesn't murder 640×480'ers would help. contact me if you want details) but putting ads up can also be offputting to some of the better customers. My site is an online game (http://xtraticwar.com), and while screen real estate is precious so is player satisfaction. Obviously the game needs paying players to survive (although server costs are low, so it pretty much pays for itself), and if you upset them there goes your revenue stream. That's why I'd rather have a banner exchange driving traffic to my site then adsense paying for my site.
