Aaaaiiiieeee!
Microsoft has apparently decided that there's not much more they can do with the Web browser. How wrong can one company be?! Well, I can no longer sit around and wait for them to upgrade their entire operating system before I change a few defaults on my PC. Am I straying from the flock? Kinda, but not really. I'm taking a few “overlays” for a spin. There are so many programs that run atop IE, but every single one of them seems to fall short in some respect. I first turned to Avant Browser, but closed it permanently after sending a list of 20 suggestions to the developer. Next up was Crazy Browser - and I'd have to be crazy to want to use it for longer than two minutes. SlimBrowser was the next to ride my desktop, but its UI (like the others I had tried) was all over the map. Just when I believed that all hope was lost, I decided to fly with MyIE2. It's not perfect, but it has the most potential out of all of these alternatives.

Ditto Ditto … why deal with add-ons or anything else when Mozilla can do it now.
The question is why isn't Chris using it now - IT IS FREE.

Perhaps I should try out this Mozilla thing that everyone is always talking about… could be interesting.

I tried MyIE2 for a while, but it did fall short on pop-ups (yeah, some of them are warranted) and on Java-related pages.

Not a bad browser, but it has the same flaw as all the rest. You aren't able to organize the favorites, and myie2 even seems to set them randomly. As for mozilla, it has that annoying Netscape flaw of demanding perfection.

I can't even get MyIE2 to load the Google Toolbar… Something the website claims it is supposed to be able to do. I can't imagine what Chris is waiting for that he would be willing to dump IE for something else. I have yet to find a browser that is as good as IE is. I do have Mozilla installed as a secondary browser (mostly so I can used the bookmarked tabs to load all the web pages I read in the morning.)

I thought blogs were meant to discuss current topics? How long have you had MyIE? I go to the page, and they have the “Lockergnome” badge already on it. Are you going to mention the beginning of the Iraq war next? BTW, ditto as well on the Mozilla thing. Smtimes I feel like the one getting screwed when I visit this blog.

I installed MyIE2 awhile back, and it put spyware on my system. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and I'm surprised that you are.

Hm, I can't find any documentation on spyware for MyIE2. The program looks interesting I'll have to give it a try.
I'm confused though: What's the problem with IE? I know it has some security flaws, but what doesn't?

I've had the same feeling as you Chris. That's why I started using Web Weasel. They're up to v 2.74 and for my money the best Browser/Weasel device on the market.

I think Chris was merely saying what he thinks is the best IE 'overlay' as he put it. He recommended Mozilla dozens of times when he was still hosting CFH.

I'm curious as to why you closed Avant Browser permanently. You sent a list of 20 upgrades. Did you hear back from them? Did they not implement them? What happened to make you permanently close it? I've been using Avant Browser and love it. They even implemented one item that I wanted.

Well, I must say I am very surprised you are using IE at all. IE, as an engine, really sucks. It's not fully compliant, accept with microsoft's version of ****** code. And what's more, why should you have to download a whole bunch of tweaks for IE if IE was good enough to do the job on it's own. For windows: Mozilla - for Mac: Safari.

I've been using Mozilla Firebird on my Wintel machine and Safari on my Mac. I'm happy with both of them and would never go back to IE.

I've been trying out Irider ( http://www.irider.com ) based on a recommendation in Dvorak's column. It has an interesting implementation of the tabbed browser scheme and its page zoom feature is pretty cool. Findings so far: Some pages with special media like movies seem to take some adjustment. I miss the cascading favorites menu like in IE. Kind of cool to leave pop-ups on but not have them “pop”.

Firebird/Mozilla
There doesn't seem to be anything more that I need. I only use windows at work (because I have to) and I never open IE. I detest it. Let alone “overlays” to add to it?
What is the point?

Hey… I've got to admit, MYIE2 is the best front end that I have ever used. So many options, including everything that the new google toolbar has. Great stuff! Thanks Chris.

Chris, Try http://www.netcaptor.com/ for a spin. NetCaptor is the best addon to IE I've seen yet. Pretty much everything the rest do, plus ad and url blocking… It's not free, but worth it.
See you at the 'Dex…

MyIE2 all the way…
Dave said “I can't even get MyIE2 to load the Google Toolbar”
> Stop by the MyIE2 forum and read the FAQ. It explains it there. http://www.myie2.com/forum
MyIE2 and popups: MyIE2 is still under development and the popup blocker gets better each time. As it is now, the Popup blocker and Content filter do a great job (and each has a white list). Thae Auto Popup blocker is also one of the best I have used.
MyIE2 and Spyware. MyIE2 is not spyware. However, there is a plugin for UCMore, which I recommend everyone NOT to use.
As Chris said in the Lockergnome Daily, MyIE2 is the best IE based browser, it has the best support forum and also is activly being developped and improved.

MyIE2 is simply the best IE shell out there; I don't think it's a real debate if you seriously try each of them out.
MyIE2 is NOT spyware; make sure you just download MyIE2 and not UCMore and AIRoboform, etc.
The only thing that I will use besides MyIE2 for browsing is Opera 7.20 Beta for its similar features and neat mail client built in for added effect.
MyIE2 is a little better for my taste simply because it renders virtually everything as was intended by the author.
Like it or not, MS/IE rules the world right now with respect to webpage rendering. Standards are not a real issue for end-users, unfortunatley.

I think it's great that so many browser options are available to us, and we get to choose which one that suit us best. I use Mozilla myself coz its the one that works smoothly for me, but hey, to each his own. Some still prefer IE, & third parties have dressed it up for the user's benefit (at least we hope).
Also I noticed some web features/effects can only work with IE, like in this blog, you can only see Chris' handwriting font with IE. A bit insignificant, but still a missed feature on other browsers as well. :) Maybe one of the reasons why many still stick with it, apart from its familiarity.
Peace Out

I agree with Technodaddy above. I've been an avid user of Netcaptor for a few years now and found out recently that it was the first 'tabbed' browser.
Only when Opera copied the effect did Adam Stiles (the creator of Netcaptor) implement Opera's gesture navigation.
I took a look at MyIE2 and it looks similar to Netcaptor, however after giving it a test run I wasn't impressed.

I thought you wanted to be free of the IE! Why are you exploring these 'addons'? What you really want is a whole new browser, for which I would suggest Mozilla Firebird or Mozilla.

Sleipnir (a Japanese tabbed browser with an English version) is really very good, also.
It is freeware, also.
It's on the same level as MyIE2 and NetCaptor, IMHO.
It can be checked out at:
