A Microsoft Windows / Linux Conspiracy Theory
An anonymous user has an interesting Vista conspiracy theory:
I think Microsoft has given up on Vista behind the scenes. I’m sending this via email because well, I know it sounds like tinfoil hat time, but I think there’s some validity to it.
Microsoft realized with XP that the NT kernel’s days were numbered, which is why they talked of the complete rewrite that was to be Longhorn / Vista (and be wonderful and ship in 2003, etc). Well with all of the efforts that went into that, and Vista basically becoming what would’ve happened to Apple if it truly had shipped Copland, Microsoft finds itself in a bind. Obviously they need to support the product they shipped, which is where SP1 and its successors come in. However, I think we’ll see some behind the scenes action regarding their fight against OSF and the Linux folks and we’ll see how this evolves into the next version of Windows.
It’s been long suspected (and pretty much a given at least circumstantially) that Microsoft as well as others have propped up the SCO group in their varied and sundry attempts to milk IBM / RedHat / Novell / AutoZone / the average Linux user, etc. out of an excessive amount of money based on code they thought they owned. Obviously in the last few months, it has come out that indeed SCO did not own said code, that indeed Novell owned it, was owed money by SCO, and we see where that went.
Coincidentally, at that time, Microsoft paid for their “license” and apparently immediately set out on a cross licensing agreement with various Linux manufacturers over some IP they claim to have patents for, but won’t show the code (the SCO maneuver). Oddly enough, one of those vendors who they are working with on cross licensing is *Novell* who owns SUSE Linux and the UNIX source code. Now Microsoft has worked directly with two companies who at the very least claim to hold the UNIX code. Microsoft has also been known to throw money about on a whim when it suits them (read original Xbox and Zune… sometimes they even make some money from it). Microsoft also has need of a much more stable Code Base for the next major iteration of Windows.
Do these tie together? Only time will tell - but it does seem quite interesting.
Anyway, sorry to hear you’re having the Vista woes. Myself I’m waiting for Leopard and FreeBSD 7 for the servers. I’m pretty happy with Feisty Fawn running on the workstation.

The only way on Earth Microsoft can serious take on Apple’s BSD flavor is with another BSD — PC-BSD. Like Apple’s OS X, the licensing allows for Microsoft to add any proprietary code they like. Frankly, if they want something stable, but offering some flex with what can be added, this would be the most likely candidate.

Regardless of whether they do switch to a *NIX type system, or stick with their 20-year old DOS-originated system (which I think they will) Microsoft really needs to realize that Vista is just a multi-billion dollar flop.
They should salvage the effective and efficient components of Vista (read: remove whatever they’ve added that drive’s the base-requirements so high) and get to work on a current basic OS. They bit off more than they could handle, and I can see it happening again as long as they are trying to keep pace with Mac or even Linux (Compiz Fusion provides similar effects as Aero Glass, however it runs fine on my DX9 128mb video card and AthlonXP 2500+ w/ 1GB of RAM.
Plainly put Vista is a bloated rushed product that clearly has a lot of **** under the hood. Microsoft needs to get back to their core competency of serving businesses and home users with a basic Operating System and leave the snaz to the professionals (and hobbyists).

Isn’t there a Unix support in Vista Ultimate? I think it is very likely that M$ next OS is kind of Unix based. There a free videos about the Singularity OS Research Project from M$ and if you look closely to the screens showed there you might see the one or other typical Unix line.

I’ve entertained the same thoughts - but two reasons why it won’t work: (1) Microsoft can’t do *anything* right, even if they hired Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman to manage it. (2) Microsoft already had Xenix. Once bitten, twice shy.

I think Microsoft has to get with the times. DOS-based operating systems are not only “not with the times”, they are also the least secure operating systems around…a low-level hacker can and will find a way to hack into a PC running a DOS-based OS (including Macs running XP under Boot Camp) and hijack the computer for nefarious reasons.
Microsoft has to go back to the drawing board…..even if it means striking a deal with Apple to let Microsoft sell a Microsoft-branded version of Mac OS X. UNIX and Linux are here to stay. I would seriously consider using a version of Windows based on PC-BSD.

An interesting thought. I know that MS will sooner or later ‘compromise’ with the open source community. It just won’t be in ways that we will agree with and will definitely benefit MS (and especially its key founder) only.
On another note, I was wondering if MS was waiting for the open source community to do the ‘dirty’ work on a piece of code or software project, then come in when it was ‘refined’ and ‘use’ the code for their own OS. If a particular open source project never reached a ‘refined’ state (perhaps for lack of interest from the end user) then pass it on for something more lucrative.
In other words let the “free” (and perhaps “unpaid”) programmers do the work of “paid” programmers then use the results in a “highly paid” for OS.
