I agree that you should think about cutting out a few of the side trips. You will have plenty to see and do in the three main sites. I sort of agree with a previous poster about venice. This was probably the least favorite of the 3 and could spend less time there in my opinion. But in all, this trip can easily be done in 2 weeks and you'll have lots of fun!

I did this same basic trip for my honeymoon. 2 weeks – rome, florence, venice, in that order. The smaller the town, the better time you'll have. Definitely do some sightseeing in Rome and Florence--you can skip Venice--but other than that, don't move every day. Don't even move every other day. You'll enjoy it better. You'll be more relaxed.

The other commentors are all correct.

Go fewer places. Stay longer in each. And it will all blur together. Not the same as a cruise, you'll be unpacking and packing all the time.My suggestion:
Buy the TimeOut guide to Rome
http://www.timeout.com/travel/rome
Also, Get the DK Guide to decide where you prefer to go in Italy...
http://www.amazon.com/Italy-Eyewitness-Travel-Guides-Streiffert/dp/0789493861Fly into Rome, Stay at the Spring House Hotel, where we stayed a few years ago, in the penthouse room on the left when you face the building, with two big balconies with an unobstructed view of the Vatican.

Stay a week. Walk and take the metro. Get to know the place.Take the train to Napoli and connect to the ferry to Capri. Beautiful, magical place. Stay any place on a clifftop with a view. Stay at leat three nights in Capri, and day trip to Portofino and Pompeii (great suggestion!)Take the train to Firenze, stay a day or two. Same with Venice. Or Siena and Lugano, if you prefer smaller towns.Just walk around and get lost, wherever you go. FYI, you can live on Gelato, Pizza slices, Espresso, spring water and fruit from stalls wherever you go in Italy. But try a few good meals and wine too....

I have to agree on a couple of things: This is not a trip, it’s a luggage hauling marathon….and you’ll feel like the luggage. you will be exhausted. Its like a reverse commute: Capri empties out in the afternoon once the day-trippers leave.(A side note: your comment system shouldn't count posts where you forget to type a required field against the "once every 15 seconds limit"!)

a little tip: when we visit the Amalfi coast, we *stay* on Capri, and visit the coastal towns during the day. The best travel experiences happen when you get off the beaten path and away from the tour groups. You're not going to really experience the counry with canned experiences and cruises. There's plenty of time to do these trips when you're old, grey and need to be shuttled around from place to place.I'm not necessarily advocating a backpacking trip, mind you. Quite the opposite, actually. I still dig the luxury, but I dig the tiny, luxurious hotels which you won't find on the main tourist strips. If I know you're returning to a great meal and a nice room in the evening, I'm up for anything during the day.

Dude, why are you vacationing like an 80 year-old?
