24, Lost… TV Recommendations?
Do I dare start watching 24, Brad? What about Lost, Maryam? Quite simply, I’m afraid I’ll get addicted to either show. I don’t have much leisure time these days, but “everybody” swears by these two television programs. It’s easy enough to pick up DVD sets to get caught up on earlier episodes, but…? Maybe I should ask this question: who thinks 24 and/or Lost are overrated?
There’s only so much time in the day, and I’m (sadly) placing more weight on HDTV programming anymore. I’ve got a few favorite shows, but am looking for general recommendations for more. I’m also trying to find new sitcoms to love. Here’s my current “wanna see very episode” list:
- Scrubs
- The Daily Show
- Family Guy
- The Simpsons
- Robot Chicken
- My Name is Earl
- Numb3rs
- Malcolm in the Middle
- Two and a Half Men
- Monk
What’s everybody else watching these days? I gotta find me some new shows to bittorrent enjoy.

Heroes — I’m liking it a lot better than Lost these days — and I like Lost a lot — new episode on in a few minutes — kids, bed, now.

I resisted watching 24 for a long time, but I finally gave in last season, and I’m glad I did. It is an amazing show that is action-packed and has great plot twists. Last season was great, and this season is shaping up to be even better. Like a fine wine, the show is getting better with age.

Chris-
A great sit-com is How I Met Your Mother, CBS mondays at 8. Critically acclaimed and very smart and funny.
For a good drama that’s very funny, check out Brothers & Sisters, ABC Sundays at 10. Very smart and funny, with Sally Field, Calista Flockhart and Rob Lowe.

Chris… I’m shocked that you don’t have Heroes and Battlestar Galactica on your list. They are two of the absolute best.
They’re both serial stories and, therefore, intimidating to new viewers. NBC has wisely put all the old episodes of Heroes on the Web.
Lost has jumped the shark this season… They made it much more surfacey and scrubbed it clean of much of its mystery and cultishness. I’m guessing they wanted to be more accessible, but old fans are losing patience.
As for 24, if you’re happy to see Muslims and Arabs as supervilliains, and you’re cool with torture, go for it. Nobody can make a scene more suspenseful. (I have a friend who uses his DVR to split the episodes so that he watches the last part of last week’s show and then jumps right into the first part of this week’s show–avoiding the cliff-hanger. Then he turns it off in the middle.)
Why Jon Stewart and not Steven Colbert? I would think you’d love “The Word” Besides, Colbert is without question the most web-savvy TV guy on the planet. He’s a hacker at heart. (and I think he’s memorized Lord of the Rings).

I agree with Michael, Heroes and Battlestar Galactica should both be on your list to watch! What about Prison Break? I just love it!

I recommend Dexter (Showtime) and Supernatural (The CW, formerly the WB).
Dexter is a great show if you like character driven stuff. It’s pretty groundbreaking TV in my opinion. They made me care and root for a serial killer.
Supernatural is awesome. I know you’re thinking, “a show from the CW (formerly the WB)? Home of teeny bopper fare like Smallville and the Gilmore Girls?” That’s what I thought at first, until I tried it. Then I was hooked. Great characters, great story, great music. It’s reminiscent of the X-Files (in fact, John Shiban, Exec. Producer and Staff Writer for The X-Files has produced and written many Supernatural episodes), but definitely stands on its own.

As far as 24 goes… I have not missed a single episode of that show… Ever. It’s that good. :)

Sorry, Chris. It’s not all episodes for free. For the first seven, you’ll have to buy them from iTunes. (But I’d say it’s worth it to get into this season.)

You will inevitably succumb to the reality that is 24. Accept your fate. The best way to watch 24 is to buy the Season 1 DVD and watch it starting at midnight on Friday night and go straight through all 24 episodes. When you are finished, you’ll be totally hooked - plus you’ll need to take a week off to recover.

Well, being a Brit, who gets stuck in hotel rooms alot (and who also loves teh newsgr00ps when at home ;) ) I say the new 24 is brilliant so far, and we love Prison Break and Lost - but getting annoyed with the overlong hiatus periods which happen with these shows.
Also, on my last trip over there, I was strangely drawn to old episodes of CSI:Miami and even DOG: Bounty Hunter ;) heh
If you have never watched a series of 24, then any of the series are great - especially ones WITHOUT his incredibly annoying daughter in them, who seems to be a disaster magnet ;)

Battlestar Galactica is on my list. I’d also say ‘The Wire’ but that season just ended (on HBO). It makes Law and Order and NYPD look like they were made by Disney.
And there is always ‘Extreme Engineering’ and ‘Extreme Machines’ on Discovery Channel, if you want a taste for really big things that can blow up or crash or stuff like that.

I have to say I agree with many of the comments above. Heroes was a sleeper hit this year. I think it even surprised them as there was little advertising done in the beginning, now it is everywhere.

I used to watch 24 religiously, but now I prefer to wait until it’s all over and buy the season on DVD so I can watch it without having to wait a week wondering what is going to happen.
I am into House, MD right now and I’m addicted to Robot Chicken, Futurama and Family Guy. Gotta love Adult Swim.

I recently bought a TiVo, which in retrospect was probably a really bad idea, because I have increased the number of shows I watch every week by an order of magnitude. Scrubs, The Daily Show, and Numb3rs are on my must-see list, too, and I’m working my way through The Simpsons on DVD. I’ll spare you the embarassingly lengthly Season Pass list from my TiVo, but a few of my favorites that haven’t been mentioned yet are Bones, Criminal Minds, and CSI (Vegas and NY).
I watched, and very much enjoyed, the first season of Lost, but in my opinion, it got fairly bizarre after that and I stopped somewhere in the middle of the second season. I’ve never seen an episode of 24 - I think the last thing I need is to add another addictive TV show to my weekly routine.
If you check out any of the shows anyone mentions, I hope you’ll post your impressions…I like your taste in TV and would be interested to hear what you think. Thanks for the great site!

Heroes.
Both my wife (decidedly NOT geeky) and I (very GEEKY) look forward to that show like no other.
Other than that, here’s our “must see” shows
Doctor Who (new series)
House
CSI (the original)
How I Met Your Mother
The Dresden Files
These are the shows I watch while cleaning the house, paying bills, etc.:
Family Guy
Robot Chicken
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Law & Order: CI (mostly just for Vincent D’onofrio, he’s a great actor)
Monk
Psych

Heroes and Lost are the 2 best shows on in my opinion. I am watching 24 again this season, even after i keep telling myself i wont year after year. It just fills in a slow television season. The show is just plain silly. Usually (this season no exception) he will get hot or stabbed in the first hour, buy hour three he has done forgotten he is wounded. I can suspend reality as much as the next guy, but this show is just ridiculous. Oh and why is he ALWAYS whispering?

Lost & 24 are highly overrated.
24 recycles the same basic plot every season. Terrorists’ with weapons threatening the US, usually biological or nuclear AND Jack stops them in a day. There I just saved you 3 or 4 seasons worth of watching.
Lost, use to be good but, got wrapped up too much in itself for its own good. It’s much like Alias became towards it’s end. Questions are just answered with more questions, and it becomes frustratingly obvious that your never gonna get the full answers.
Heroes however, is good. Very good. I’d venture to say freaking AWESOME! If your a comic geek more so.

Just wanna say to the guy who is badmouthing 24, that it should be fairly obvious with the older seasons that jack stars in all of them. he is basically the spine of the whole series. it revolves around him. so the obvious part is that whatever happens he will always manage to somehow get himself out of any situation. u might say, yeah so its lame. we know what’s gonna happen. well all i have to say is that if u want a reality show just keep watching shows like big brother. that’s it for you.
I am tired of people pointing out flaws in each show. anybody with lots of time on their hands like myself will want to sit down and watch almost any tv even if its a bit predictable. I started from square one.
24 is now in its sixth season and from what i saw on the adverts when i was starting out, ( kiefer sutherland) stars in the sixth season as well as the first. so i was watching the show under the impression that jack will get himself out of any situation, no matter what. and even so. if u commit urself to the other great aspects of the show, like tha action and the unpredictability and the twists, there’s really not a lot more u can ask for in a show. but i have to agree with someone else who said its better to wait for a season to end and then watch it rather than wait once a week because then u easily get out of the mood and one hour believe me is just enough to get you back in the mood again every week, but by then the episode is finished. watch it all to gether and wait for the big cliffhangers at the end of almost every season. i guarantee u will get the full enjoyment that way. And please. we are talking about TV here. OK?
Television. People want entertainment. we don’t care if he’s wounded one hour and the next hour he forgetsabout it. just follow tha ******* story and forget about minor details. i would recommend 24 strongly as the best series out there.
24
Prison Break
Lost
Heroes
NCIS
If anybody could explain to me why CSI is better than NCIS then please give me a reason to watch it because so far i’m not really impressed by CSI. Law and order does not compare to either CSI or NCIS. Please someone give me a reason to start watching CSI.

How I Met Your Mother, The Office, Heroes are near the top of my “regular watching” list, along with some of your mentions.
I’d also consider checking into Dexter (season 1 just finished) on Showtime for something heavier but very intriguing. Also check out any of FX’s offerings for something completely different. The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me are far from your standard cable shows and all bring something completely different to the table.

I have to chime in with “Heroes” as well!
Glaring omission from your list.
I don’t have much time for TV, either. It’s the only one I watch “live.” If I didn’t have class on Monday night, I would actually watch it live, commercials and all. As it is, we TiVo and start watching it as soon as I get home.

I went though TiVO tonight and cancelled about 10 season passes. If I get three shows behind, am I really that interested in seeing it?
I don’t know why I watch “Stone Undercover”. I don’t want to tell you it’s a great TV show, because it’s not, but somehow, I never finding myself getting behind on them.
“Ace of Cakes” is curiously compelling in a “slow down to gawk at the traffic accident” kind of way.
And although I cancelled all those other season passes, I added “Match Game”. Yeah, reruns from the 1970s - but it’s still funny, and unlike most shows, it doesn’t ruin things if you watch 5 minutes now, 15 minutes later today, the final 10 minutes tomorrow.
Mostly, I let TiVO pick out movies on AMC, TMC, FMC, IFC, etc. I’ve had TiVO long enough that it rarely picks out a movie I don’t like.

Until about 2 years ago I would never give any time for watching tv series. I saw Lost advertised and I decided to give it a go. 3 seasons later and I am completely hooked. Once I caught up with America I needed more series, more things to watch!!!! Along came Prison break and I got hooked on this too. Started watching Heroes last week and I am upto episode 14. I absolutely love LOST but HEROES is fantastic.I have avoided 24 (even though most people I know love it) but I am saving it for when Heroes, Lost and Prison Break end. It will be a sad day when these finish.
