How Young Were You When You Finished College?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

I was a college student once, but I don’t think I would want to repeat the experience now as an adult. I’m learning so much at this point on a daily basis, I don’t think I’d learn as much in a classroom. But if a college degree is important to you, it doesn’t matter what age you are. You should go for it. Chat member TuxedoJericho recently did. He started back to college at the age of 31, and sent these tips to share with all of you.

What Cola do Most Geeks Drink?

What type of cola do you drink? I gave up flavored soda years ago. It’s full of sugar and syrup and such. I don’t drink diet soda because I don’t ingest any type of artificial sweetener. I heard an advertisement recently for a natural type of cola, so I had to try it. Zevia is a natural cola, with no artificial sweeteners.

At What Point did You Know You Were a Geek?

Since the inception of Geeks, I’ve often wondered this: how and when did you know you were a Geek? I’ve always been one, I just didn’t realize it really until college. I asked everyone over at FriendFeed when they discovered the truth about themselves. Some of them were hilarious, while others were dead serious about their Geekitude.

Have You Ever Wanted to be a 3D Game Developer?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

When I was a kid, we had a Commodore 64 computer. It had a program that would allow you to create little games. It was kind of cool, but they were nothing like what you can create and play today. The tools for game creation today are just so advanced and complex, right? Not necessarily, no. Alex sent me an email with a link to the Alice project. Alice is educational software that allows you to learn programming in a 3D environment.

Do You Recommend a Certain Type of Portable Hard Drive?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

My wife Ponzi has started to Scuba Dive recently. In a few weeks, she’ll be going to Baja CA and down into Mexico to swim with sharks. She’ll be shooting video, of course. With the MacBook Air, she won’t have enough space to store all her video. So what should she use for a portable hard drive? She likes things that are small and she can easily carry anywhere with her. I told her that the highest amount of space she’ll get and stay portable would be about 320GB. She said that no, she wanted a TB of space. I asked her if she wanted more space for storage, or more in the physical size of the unit. She wanted a compromise somehow, so I went researching. I found the Iomega 1TB drive, and even secured a coupon for it.

I don’t have a Newegg coupon, but I did find it for $40+ cheaper at TheNerds.net (after shipping), which is still $10 cheaper than NewEgg even after their $30 mail-in rebate:

Would You Like to be a Hacker, Like in the Movies?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

I have a feeling life would be much easier if I could program. Sadly, I don’t sit on that side of the Geek fence. I have to rely on others to create things for me. Are you a beginning programmer, or someone who wants to try? Recently, I was doing a video on another type of programming tool when my neighbor sent me an IM. He asked me if I had ever heard of the website HacketyHack. No, I hadn’t. So of course, I set out to learn… and learn, I did!
