Who uses Internet Explorer, Anyway?

Apple’s MobileMe service doesn’t work with IE7. Here’s a screen shot of the error… and I asked, who uses IE, anyway? Let’s see what my friends over at Friendfeed had to say about this.

Internet Explorer

I know right lol. Sign of the time! - ChaCha Fance

Lots of people who work in companies all around the world. Oh, and 90% of the people who come to my websites? - Pete Gilbert

People who shouldn’t be. - Adam Turetzky

Dumb people… which make up 30% of the people who visit my site. - James Mowery via twhirl

:’( still using IE6 at work *nearly vomits* - klecu

That’s a sweeping statement.. Lots of people still use IE, including IE6, and it’s these people who make the job of us Web Developers very, very difficult.. - Winston Teo

I don’t use it by choice but have to have it on hand due to the nature of my work and how *nothing* ever ever ever looks or works right in IE and it seems everyone in the world excepting myself uses IE. If IE disappeared suddenly, I wouldn’t shed a tear. - Susanne "Renee" Bullo

@Winston I hear ya mate. It does make the job hair-pullingly difficult sometimes. But its hard to force users to jump the evil IE ship. Especially basic users that aren’t familiar with tech, and use whatever comes with their machine which is usually IE. - mokargas

Your grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, for many of you - Michael W. May via twhirl

Me, when FF slows down to a crawl? (not often, btw) Most other physical people I know? - Yuvi

Just imagine - what would the reaction be, if this message popped out on a Microsoft owned online place? - Yuvi

This banner is a thing of beauty. It has single handedly restored my faith in humanity. - Zach Landes

I’m glad they offered Firefox as an option too. - Gary Bacon II

I use Internet Explorer. Never had a problem with it. Never saw a need to switch. - Brandon LeBlanc via twhirl

excellent… - Leonard Libitz

I dont use explorer anymore i love Ff & Tbird - Muge Cerman

Just Firefox & Midori ( http://software.twotoasts.de/i… ) - Kemal Yaylali

I do Firefox is slow at im constantly having to change more and more pages to RENDER AS IE with the IETAB because they wont render right using FIREFOX as the rendering agent. =( and firefox lags if you have like a streaming music open in another tab and your trying to type in another. I am switching back I think. - Christopher

@Chris: Rendering slower than IE?? No way… - Kemal Yaylali

@Christopher: I always have a last.fm stream playing in one tab and have never run it to that problem. Been doing that for well over a year now. You positive the issue is firefox? - Scott Jarkoff

I hope people in this comment thread realize they are in a FireFox bubble. Ask anyone running a major website that reaches the masses (tech sites need not respond) and you see that IE is alive and well in a leading position. - Jim McCusker

Safari FTW!! - Connor P Jackson via twhirl

hehe. just kidding - Connor P Jackson via twhirl

Comes from the company who cannot get their act together with Safari. - Manoj Nagpal

When at school I have to use Internet Explorer 6. A lot of techie sites do not work right in Internet Explorer I find… it’s quite annoying to use IE6 in general though. Not even tabs. - Jake (aka Jawee)

It made me feel warm inside - Jamie

@Jim We all know, which is why everyone is still making sure their sites render properly in IE.. If only we could all take the cue from 37signals: http://37signals.blogs.com/pro… - Winston Teo

People who stick with the software bundled with their computers. Read≠FriendFeed - Drew via twhirl

Wow, how do you build a product and not fully support IE? That’s bold. - Ryan

Is this real? I find it hard to believe. - Mack D. Male

I still use IE7 on my work computer because I like using the browser that most people are using to get their view of the web - Rajiv Doshi

What’s your thoughts regarding this?

either (though I’m sure this alleged technological shortcoming is more marketing-driven than anything else). One such example is Apple’s MobileMe service - read about that situation (and some added commentary) from Chris Pirillo and othershere. In terms of lingering frustrations, I really only wish Firefox had a cleartype option/add-on like IE7, that way you wouldn’t need to enable the font setting for your entire system just to have it apply within Firefox. Still, even I can admit

I certainly don’t use I.E. Recently I have been trying out some web browsers and my favourite is currently Opera.

Really and honestly? It’s about time the tables were turned.

On the flip side as a developer I think companies (especially large companies) should do their best to support all browsers. This is a pretty specialized app so i understand, but still.

Funny.

More sites should do this kind of stuff. IE7 is a flaming piece of crud that botches up web standards and is partially unsecure. Why should it be supported?

Firefox, Opera, and Safari are superior over it in the fact that they don’t botch up web standards, they’re all faster in some cases, and they aren’t limited to one OS. Usually the same experience you get with those, you get the same on the other OS.

I’ve been a Firefox user for a couple years, and although I live in this geek fantasy where most people I talk to online use Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Flock. I do realize people still happen to use IE. I mean my parents use IE7 (haven’t gotten them to switch, and personally, my Dads been in IT for many years, I’ll let him use what he wants to use, and what he lets my Mom use)
Though I have gotten my younger brothers to switch to either Flock or Firefox.
Though, if a person does choose to use IE, if they don’t have IE7, I will find it in myself to bug them. IE6 is the most insecure piece of garbage out there.
And as for at school, I use Firefox portable.

I have a bit of browser swiching history…
I rember i used opera, but then switched when they changed the inteface around version 6.0-7.0 (which has kept me from using it again)

Then i Used IE, then Maxthon, then phaseout (cuz i liked the design) but quickly switched to avant browser, which i ended up using for years.

Then i started hearing about safari, and was eager to try it out. In the beta stages i just used it as a secondary browser, but i fell in love with the interface and font rendering and it became the primary browser. Switching from safari to avant was kinda hard, beacuase id gotten used to avants mouse gestures, something no other browser did quite as well.

Anyway im now an safari user, and using IE is a pain, unfortunantly i have to sometimes, as some pages dont support safari.

It’s kinda like losing your virginity.

If IE6 or 7 is the browser you learn on … there’s always a special place in your heart for it.

That’s probably one big reason why IE users are not defecting in droves.

my freak friend does (I only call him a freak cause he uses IE).
He told him there would be no way I’d use IE. I prefer Firefox and even Safari beforeI using IE. But he was Queen of Denile and said he “loved” IE.

Frankly, I think he says that cause he’s rationalized the use of it on his government computer where installment of unsupported software is NOT allowed. the poor sorry sod… :(

I see a steadily increasing trend not to support IE. Doesn’t bother me any.

I still use IE. I also use Safari(on Windows Vista) Firefox 3.0 and Opera 9.51 hey what can I say I just like varity.

Is this supposed to be another pathetic strategy to make us use safari on our windows machines?

At home I use Mozilla FireFox on My computer.

I use Firefox every bit I can. And people refuse to switch browsers because things are incompatible with FF, Safari, Opera, etc…? Well it seems that services are incompatible with IE as well, now doesn’t it.

Who uses Internet Explorer, anyway? As an experienced Web Developer and avid IE user, I felt compelled to respond. What’s further, my comment was long enough that I felt it justified a whole blog entry:

so where did this program come from and why did it get installed on my PC? Did anyone notice that the mobile me website for PC shows the IE icon? Didn’t someone tell the designers of that page what works with their program? ( http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/pc.html )

This is just another form of Microsoft bashing. I’m using FF by the way. I couldn’t agree more with Jim McCusker - you simply cannot condemn at least three quarters of your site visitors just because they are using what you consider to be the wrong browser.

I’m a Web Developer. I use Internet Explorer. Never had a problem with it, really (Except that IE7 and IE8 seem to have an ugly, bloated UI; I miss IE6). 85% of my website traffic uses Internet Explorer; 8% Firefox, and a piddly 7% uses everything else; so don’t complain when I refer to your browser as “Third Party”.

I do use FireFox to verify that the site looks right, however. It’s the difference between real standards and the De Facto standards that Microsoft is effectively pushing on us. Generally I make sure it works in IE first, and then check for validation and rendering in FireFox. This guarantees that it works for at least 85% of the viewers.

Seriously, what’s wrong with it? what does it not do that you want? Since IE8 will be standards-compliant, will you still use your third-party browser? If so, why? I’d like to hear a rant on that one.

I haven’t been using IE since around 2000, if memory serves me right. Now I use Opera (mostly) and FireFox (ocassionally), and before that — NeoPlanet and something else, but not for long.

I use Firefox 3. I used to use I.E. but it was slow, did not block pop-ups and had crappy security. I would like to see Microsoft put Firefox and OpenOffice in Windows 7.

I used IE for a majority of my life. I always thought it was the “coolest browser in the world…” I switched over to Firefox over 3 years ago–It brought me new life. Since then, I question why I thought IE was so cool… It’s so buggy and slow compared to Firefox… Back in April, I started using Safari for Windows (in prep. for my Mac). Then in June, I got my MacBook.

Safari is my main browser, but it’s not fully compatible with the web software at my work, so I keep Firefox 3 handy. You can consider me a Safari+Firefox guy… It just feels so odd whenever I have no choice but to use IE… So boring, so plain, so SLOW!

I would have to say Safari is my favorite browser but I do run in to problems with it and have to bounce back to Firefox one example is I can not log in to monster.com with safari it tells me over and over my password is wrong but it works just fine in FF… odd

That was interesting to read.

I haven’t used IE since Firefox was a baby Phoenix. My alternate browsers are Opera and Safari. If a site doesn’t work with one of those three, then that’s a site I don’t need to visit.

My VERY LARGE company does… So now I cannot view my .mac (now Mobile Me) account (WHICH I PAID FOR) while at work. I Will not be renewing this service.

What Do You Think?
