Is Super Monkey Balls on the iPhone any Good?

Yes, the video is upside-down. It’s supposed to be! I wanted to show you Super Monkey Ball, which is available from iTunes. I installed 2.0 onto my iPhone today, and started downloading apps. I noticed a ton of people had been downloading this particular one, so I was trying to decide what to do. I was hemming and hawing, trying to decide if I should spend the ten bucks to get this game or not. My friend Kevin Carmony sent me a $10 gift certificate to the iTunes store, telling me to stop messing around and get it already! Ok fine! So I buy the app and start playing around with it. OMG. This is awesome!

This gave me an idea! I could get people to send me $10 iTunes gift certificates in exchange for my doing silly things. Someone had me sing Chocolate Rain, which I did of course. Another one of you sent me a gift certificate and asked me to let you see me playing Super Monkey Ball. If you want me to do something silly, it’ll cost you a $10 iTunes gift certificate! I know you can’t hear me very well, but this game isn’t about the audio. It’s all about the game play. I’ve found that if you hold it at a ten-degree angle, it will work much better for you.

You are one of four monkey characters who happens to reside in a clear sphere. Your goal is to roll around a series of precariously strung platforms into the goal portal. On the iPhone, control is accelerometer-based–simply tilting the device back and forth controls your momentum. If you receive a call while playing Super Monkey Ball, play will be interrupted and you will be presented with the traditional “Answer” or “Decline” screen. If you decline the call, Super Monkey Ball will be automatically paused and you can immediately resume and return to play. If, however, you accept the call, Super Monkey Ball will restart and your previous game will be eliminated.

Thanks, Apolo for the gift certificate, and for asking me to play this game in a video. It’s a lot of fun, and I’m sure I’ll master it… eventually!

Yes, I know I put Monkey Balls instead of Monkey Ball… just thought you’d get a laugh out of it!

So far I’m loving it!! Great fun!

I found the game both fun and well-designed. It was definitely worth the small fee of $10!!! It was great to see this game come to the App Store. I had been a fan of this game for awhile and was very excited when I saw that it was going to be available through Apple’s 2.0 update.

PS: Nice job on the name Kat :D

[...] any other game for your iphone or Touch, purchase this one! You won’t be sorry. Chris Pirillo gave it a favorable review and his stamp of approval. [...]

For me playing Super Monkey Ball is extremely difficult. Updates should be coming…should, or this will be the worst $10 I’ve ever spent.

i don’t have the ten dollars at the moment but this is the first thing I’m buying

Monkeyball looks so fun on the iphone…but harder

Of course Super Monkey Ball is good. It’s really hard. I like playing it but they could have made it a little easier.

I am so jealous, I wanted to try it out so badly. Hopefully I can find a friend that has it. I have the game for gamecube and I love it. It is such a blast. It is definitely not as easy as it looks. It must be much more difficult with the iphone, probably higher chance of panicking. Thanks for the review Chris :-)

MOBILE - Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The iPhone 3G has been released (at least in the states and in a few other countries - including Canada) - and jailbreaked. The iTunes App Store has been officially launched too. There is nowaton of App reviews. Including an early list of Top Downloads. BLOGGING - As for the twitter front, it has been more and more difficult to use twitter in the last few weeks and I caught myself ignoring much of the noise there. I did try Idendi.ca (

I think as far as the game goes the control of it is a little hard to master especially when you get it down on one level only to be thrown into another level that is slightly harder.

Graphics and Gameplay though as far as a mobile device are great. I think SEGA has put together a great game for the iPhone, I mean the sales statistics alone prove that it is the most popular game on the AppStore and there is no question why either.

I’ve been playing Super Monkey Ball since the first game for GameCube and the game is simply addicting fun. There are so many unique and interesting stratagies you have to use in the game for each stage in adventure mode.

Although I have the utmost respect for Chris Pirillo, I have to disagree with his review. In fact, I would go so far as to say that his review is incomplete and completely off in some regards. He obviously hasn’t played it long enough to discover many of the game’s shortcomings. Once you get over the initial glitz, there are some serious problems.

1. Yes, the graphics and framerate are excellent, but the game’s controls are extremely frustrating. The iPhone’s accelerometer offers a unique control scheme, but it’s implementation here is far too sensitive.

2. The game is just too hard. I finally got through the entire first world and was elated. I’m all ready to play the next world! Wrong. You have to collect ALL of the bananas on EVERY level to advance. This is just plain stupid and makes the game way too hard.

3. No save feature! Every time you start the game, you have to start at level 1. Again, very frustrating.

4. Considering how badly Chris plays SMB, it’s amazing how much fun he’s having, but he makes my point for me; the games controls are far too sensitive.

5. How can Chris possibly pass judgement on games he hasn’t played?? How can he know that other games aren’t more rewarding if he hasn’t played them.

So in short, this should be called a preview, not a review. As a review, it is incomplete and does not shed any insight into the depth (and lack of depth) this game offers.
