If I don’t say this right, people will be upset. I know that some will chastise me for even doing this video. What I’m referring to is a situation that you may have either found yourself in… or will in the future. I’m talking about switching your primary operating system from Windows to Mac OS X. You could say it was curiosity that won me over. I was a life-long Windows user, like many of you are. However, I felt as though I was ready to expand my horizons and learn more. I started playing in Linux and OS X. I love to learn new things. Heck, I’m excited to try out the newest version of Windows when it’s ready to beta test.
Until you are me, you cannot tell me what I can choose for myself, and vice-versa. I hate it when people email me to ask me what they should get. I don’t know what you should get! What will fit your budget and needs the best? No matter what, I’m happy with whatever you decide. Do your research and choose whatever you are comfortable will be the best product for you.
As far as operating systems go, there is no “best”. Again, it’s a matter of choice. What will suit your needs and preferences? When you first turn on a Mac, you will be ticked off if you’re expecting to just jump in and know what to do, where everything is, and how to use it all. It’s different. Of course it is! It’s a completely different experience. Does that make it a bad one? Does that make it better? Of course not! It just makes it different.
There may be some features inside of Windows that you miss. I have a few tools that I have found that may help you feel more comfortable using a Mac.
- When you right click inside an Explorer menu, you’ve got “new” and it cascades out from there. Some people miss that in Mac OS X. If you download Document Palette, it will do essentially the same thing. Document Palette runs in the background and allows you to create new documents in the current folder.
- If you like that cascading right click menu, but don’t really like Document Palette, you can try NuFile. It adds a new file menu when you right click at a folder just like what you can do in Windows. With this menu, you can create an empty file of your favourite type with just two clicks.
- I fell in love with this instantly. Inside of Windows, it’s easy to change file types on a mass scale… not so much in a Mac. MisFox will show all the file mappings settings and the protocol helpers. You can inspect these settings, but you can also edit, delete and create new items for these settings.
- How can you configure your sounds in OS X? Well, now it’s as easy as it is in Windows. BleepBlop is a simple utility which allows you to customise all your OS X sounds through an easy-to-use sexy interface. Bleep Blop also allows you to save your sound settings as Blundles.
So if you’ve already made the switch to OS X, what other applications and programs have you used to make life easier on a Mac?

Really liked this round-up, Chris. It was well presented. I especially like how you gave the love for trying new things on all platforms.
You successfully pointed out how much fun it is to discover different types of software that may have been something totally integrated on the older platform.

I switched last year. I felt tired about fixing stuff on Windows, and only heard good things about Macs.
One of my favorites little apps on OS X is Today:
http://secondgearllc.com/today/
It’s the perfect interface for iCal.
And there are some must-have like these ones:
- Adium: http://www.adiumx.com/
- Growl: http://growl.info/
Making the switch is the best move I’ve made with computers in years.
It re-ignited my passion for computers, and I am so exited about it that I started a blog.
I’d like it to be a helpful resource for switchers or help anyone who hesitates to make the switch.
I’m looking for people who’d like to contribute. If you’re interested, contact me at oli[at]iswitchd[dot]com

I’m in the process of switching from Windows to Linux. The only time I switch to Windows now is to play games. Everything else I do on Linux.

I switched my primary OS to Mac in March. My reasons were almost identical to yours: I was ready to try something new. I still use Windows at work and use VMware to facilitate using it on my Mac. I don’t find one vastly better than the other, just different. Friends told me to expect a two week adjustment period, and that was pretty accurate.

I purchased an iMac and kept if for a month. Hated it. Went back to the store and bought a high end PC for less money and more to it, yes, even with Vista which I think is great. Have had no problems with the PC and love getting back to HOME.
I’m not knew to computers. I had Windows 3.2, 95, 98 ME and XP and had issues with all of them. Vista has been a breeze from the get go. Probably because the PC was designed for it. Quad, 3g mem, core 2 duo etc.

I tried to switch because I love the interface and it’s so darn beautiful.
BUT - As much as i like it, I’m really sorry to say that I’m finding it actually less stable than the XP environment I’m coming from.
Plus, because I got a MBP, the keyboard has fewer keys than the Thinkpad I tried to move from, so doing ANYTHING on the MBP takes more keystrokes no matter how many macro/keyboard-shortcut programs one employs. Bottom line is that it takes me anywhere from 25-50% longer to get things done on the Mac than the PC. Not to mention that the keyboard is unreadable in certain lights.
I’ve invested much $ and in trying to make this work for me but have finally started thinking about just cutting my losses and selling it. What drove me over the edge was letting the updater update the OS and Time Machine software& time capsule hardware last night and as a result losing any ability to actually connect to the drive!! Sigh. I had such high expectations…

I made the switch in May, after 15+ years as a Windows User, and haven’t looked back! I’ve been finding programs comparable on the Mac to what I used to use on Windows… Some are even easier to use. My 3yo girls love the Mac. They can already log in and get to their games on their own… I think it’s the mouse… Vista really turned me off of Windows, and also how unstable Windows is… I’ve had the best experience with my iMac, and I do believe I’m going to be a Mac user from now on… Now, if only I could get a MacBook Pro.. hmmm..

I have never used MisFox, but globally changing which application is associated with a file type is very easy in the Finder. You can merely find a file that opens with the “wrong” application. Right click and choose Get Info (or command-I), click on the “Open with…”, select the application that you would like to have it open with, and click “Change all.”

I really like Plaxo for the Mac to sync my Address Book and Calendar.
http://www.plaxo.com/downloads/mac
Here’s what I did to move my data:
1. Installed the Windows version for Outlook and performed a sync (sign up for Plaxo first; it’s free).
2. Installed the Mac version and performed a sync.
3. Synced my iPhone Info.
Done. Contacts and calendar in three locations.

Once you go Mac, you’ll never go back. Why screw around with anti-virus software ? Don’t need it with a Mac.
Windows is an archaic operating system that is long overdue for a major, I MEAN MAJOR change.
Switch now and avoid the rush.

You made some good points chris. I myself would be getting a Mac for when I go on to university, while using my PC for gaming. I really don’t see a problem with using both, while fan boys and girls of both OS’ hate the other.

I haven’t made the switch yet, mostly because I’m still just finishing up college and money is an issue. But, i plan to get a Mac Pro, however I’m not sure if it will be my main machine, i want use it solely as a Video Editing machine (as I’m attempting to start a business). But from what everyone tells me, I’ll end up falling in love with mac and switch over 100%.
I completely agree with you Chris, when you say there is no right or wrong OS…people have different preferences, different needs, different wants. Each OS that’s out there caters to different people better then others. That’s what makes the Tech Field so great! there’s something out there for everyone.

i was going back and forth, if i should switch to the mac, and here is why i didnt:
i dont like the idea of going to a mac. i feel as if i am cheating on windows
I like windows, and i am used to it, so why switch?
why i wanted to switch to mac:
learning
speed
to use great programs only for the mac

Great tools for easily switching to Mac OS. I’ve wanted to switch for many years, but the price has always been the “kicker” in my decision. I’m gonna have to give in and get one, because I loved using every Mac computer I’ve tried.

I’ve been on OSX 10.4 and now 10.5. I have been wanting to take the plunge for a while, then my wife bought me a G4 off ebay 1 1/2 years ago. I had to go find some of the info I needed to get my Outlook email over to the Mac, but after that, I’m a happy camper. I now own 2, a mini at my office, and a Pro at home. I do still have a powerhouse pc that I use just for gaming, til the games catch up to the Mac.

I have been using a Mac for almost three years ago. I actually switched on a spur of the moment when I had my brother go to a computer store to get some CDR’s when he spotted a Mac Mini that was a customer return, and was on sale for $350.
I had some cash then, and when my brother called me at my job at the time, I told him to jump on it!
Almost three years later, I have acquired an iMac HD 24″ which has blown anything away that I have owned before it. I am also looking into getting a MacBook shortly also!

Made the switch a few months ago. First Mac that I have owned in my life. Got it not because it was an Apple computer. Got it because MACOSX is Unix under the covers with a clean User Interface. I do not worry about making my Mac work like a Windows machine. But I have to figure out how to get my integrated into my Windows/Linux network. Fileshares and print shares are Windows based and not necessarily Bonjour compatible like Linux is. Over time my network will become predominately a Mac/Linux based one.

Switched to a macbook pro in March after using pc’s in my professional career (network engineer) for over 20 years. I rarely ever use my home Vista machine anymore. I also use Vmware’s Fusion so I can use it on tasks that require an XP or Server interface. My kids love it too (4 and 7 years old and they notice the difference!)
I love it, and I’ll never go back.
It’s a new era… and old farts like me are even converting.

I’ll hopefully be switching to Mac after I graduate the 8th grade a year from now. My PC is just giving me so many problems right now. I can’t download ANY programs because my Anti-Virus automatically blocks it and it’s just becoming too much to bear. Now it’s gotten to the point where I’m scared to shut down because I’m afraid it will never boot up again. The most annoying thing is there are no drivers for my Motorola RAZR so I cannot connect it, where as on a Mac I could automatically sync it via bluetooth.
