Thoughts on Apple’s WWDC 2008, iPhone 3G?

The keynote for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference has come and gone. I can’t say that all of my expectations were met, but I can say this:
- iPhone 3G should be a “no brainer” upgrade from the current iPhone.
Not only will it be substantially cheaper, but substantially faster as well.As Boing Boing points out, there’s a gotcha with the price point of iPhone 3G - the unit itself may be cheaper ($199 versus $399), but the new data plan is more expensive than today’s ($30 - $45 for 3G versus $20 for EDGE). It’s not quite a wash, as you pay for service indefinitely. - Everyone, mark your calendars for July 11th.
- Good on Apple for releasing the iPhone 2.0 OS for current generation iPhones (EDGE) as well as the iPhone 3G. Everybody will be able to enjoy the new App Store.
- I could be mistaken, but it seems that creative apps (music, video, photo, etc.) will be more popular than games on the iPhone 3G.
- If $9.99 is the going price for the average iPhone app, I’m going to be spending a lot more money than anticipated. For an app that you use all the time, that’ll be a bargain.
- I’m happy to see that Apple is enabling the distribution of free apps on the iPhone without charging the developers anything.
- I’m already a .Mac subscriber, and will welcome MobileMe with open arms when it’s released. Ponzi and I currently use Rackspace for Exchange service - and without custom domains, we may have to continue to use it and Plaxo to sync between accounts. Still, I hope we can rely on MobileMe for group calendaring and tasks. I’m still looking into how MobileMe will interoperate with Exchange, though. Can’t wait to watch the tour this afternoon.
- Looks as though the seventh release of the iPhone SDK is out.
- The next iteration of Mac OS X will be called Snow Leopard, set to be released within a year. No new features beyond native support for Exchange are set to be included. With it, they aim to support newer hardware architectures (like multiple CPUs) as well as fix what’s already in place. It’s an evolutionary upgrade that oughta bring more speed and stability to the Mac you’re using today.
- No word on whether iPhone 3G will support video recording / uploading or not. Maybe someone at YouTube is looking into the SDK (if the SDK will enable such an experience).
- I’ve never been in love with GPS hardware and software, but the iPhone 3G is certain to spoil me.
- The “Apple Push Notification Service” will be the way background apps on mobile devices should have been all along. Instead of sucking up battery and CPU in the background, apps can call upon the service for updates remotely. Naturally, this will require a constant connection to the ‘Net - but when aren’t you connected these days?
If you were listening to the keynote, what are your thoughts about Apple’s announcements and plans?

I personally am not an iPhone fan but I can say that the addition of the eBay auctioner seems like a really cool idea. Say if your internet was out but the iPhone is wireless via a satellite, you could still get on it and go to eBay. It would bring ages of boring useless fun for the younger crowd which relies on sites like eBay, Wikipedia, and Urban Dictionary to stop boredom.

I love the new features of the new iphone. I understand Apple had to cut cost to make the phone cheaper, but a plastic case? I am so upset that they got rid of the aluminum case and went to a cheap plastic case. A phone get banged up and dropped so I feel a aluminum case will better protect it. A cheap plastic case will scratch, maybe crack, and looks cheap. Bottom line, they have a great revolutionary phone but bring back the aluminum case. I will pay more for the phone if that’s what it will take. Am I wrong to think this? Let’s start a discussion on this issue. Thanks!

No doubt, the addition of the 3G chip and GPS is great, but the main features come with the SDK. It opens a whole new world that the iPhone didn’t have before. Many great applications are starting to come out, and will continue to come out as time goes on. One thing that really impressed me what the ‘push’ IM process that was mentioned. That’s Apple at it’s finest.

We’re reporting that the internet seems a little split with today’s announcements. Everyone seems to have something they think is missing that should be there. Yes people like the 3G, and to a lesser extent the addition of GPS but MMS and video chat are two things that people really seem to want.

I ask myself, do i want to pay more than i currently do for phone service. The answer is No - $30 for the data plan is unreasonable IMHO.

Sustantially cheaper? That’s a trick. What Steve left out is that ATT’s 3G data plan is $30/month for consumers, $45/month for business, compared to current $20/month on EDGE. Also, Apple no longer includes the dock in the box. That’s an add-on option.
Plus, as you note, if you want the marvy sync-to-cloud features of mobileme, you’ll be paying $99/year. (unless you’re already a .mac subscriber).

Forget the aluminum case. They are reasonably priced. Great upgrade. I will get one now.
As for the keynote… I was hoping for more than just a new iPhone. I’m eager to see new Macs.

well the prices for the plans here in germany are not out yet, but the older ones are ok , so I guess they wont go crazy with the 3g ones either. besides that I am glad that most of the features I wanted are in. the video recording is a good point and would be awesome, but besides youtube I am sure will be someone out there who will integrate that if it is not in yet. with the whole mobile me thing they made it perfect for my needs. I was so looking for a solution like this over the years and there never was anything as integrated as this and then even cross platform.
I’ll camp infront of the shop for sure this time.

I love my iPhone except for filling out forms on it. Slow! So I hope the new one is better. I’d like video recording and had been hoping for video chat. Mostly I wish AT&T would give a good upgrade deal so I can justify buying a new one after one year of owning this higher priced first version.

c’mon, did you really think the prices for the plans would stay the same? it is alot more data that gets shoved around, especially with that mobileme business. I think its fair.

I have to say, I have never really been an apple fan, but when I saw the first iphone, I thought that I could convert, then I saw the price tag, and then the oops we charged too much, here’s a gift cert. Not to mention all the problems the iphone had at release. But now it’s been out a while and seems to work alright. (Have not followed it much, but I am sure there is less I hate Steve Jobs flames then Bill Gates.)
Listening to the pitch for this new iphone 3G has gotten me interested enough to hold off on getting a new Sprint Blackberry, Palm Treo, or other Mobile device so I can really review the feature set and digest the posibility of having an iphone.
I have to say I am leaning towards the iphone after today, and I have not even done a lot of looking to see what experts are saying. (Besides the experts found in the Chat room here at live.pirillo.com)
Until the next time,

Everything sounds Great. $200 for the New iPhone sounds really good. But at the same time you’ll be paying more monthly, but still, its good. Its great that they are coming out with 10.6 Snow leopard. It won’t have new features but it will make an already great OS even better. Unfortunately I don’t currently own a Mac but I hope that will change soon.

Well the Iphone 3g is a huge success and I don’t think many other companies will be able to make something comporable. They certainly have not yet. I love the new features, and software capabilities.

I think the iphone 3G is a little better but really is not worth it to upgrade. I think the iphone and iphone is almost the same so it dosent really matter if you get it or not.

It was a great keynote, however I’m not moved to get the 3G. I’ll stick with my 8GB iPhone since it’s not obsolete. I’m not impressed with the plastic backing or the GPS. Sure, the speed is faster but I’m able to find a wi-fi spot and be okay. I think those with the original iPhone can wait for 3.0.

I can’t beleive it took Apple so long to release this. 3G was the fastest then and still is. I was suprised they were releasing the original iPhone on EDGE. Anyways, it’s finally here…iPhone in Canada. I do hope that Apple will put some thought into creating a CDMA version of iPhone so it can work on carriers such as verison (biggest in US) or Telus (biggest in Canada).

Dang it,I wish I could get the iphone. The problem is,I dont have AT&T.Hopefully you can hack the 3g and hopefully it will have video recording and maybe a better webbroswer. But my biggest hope is that the iphone will be out for other cariars in America but I highly doubt that will happen.

I’m very disappointed in the release date and data pricing increase.
I also would have like to see a front-facing camera for video conferencing.
Curious about video recording in general on the phone.

30-45 dollar 3g data plan?
sucks. Period.
i am paying 20 dollar data plan from AT&T (secretly tethering at time) for 3g.
This gets me 3g connection on my laptop when I need it, and when I want it… with my N95 doing its job for turn-by-turn GPS service with Garmin software, and perfect syncing with my mac, i don’t really think I want iPhone 3g.
200 dollar price drop might attract more “average joe” population, however it is questionable that they are willing to pay for 40 dollar basic calling plan(yes, basic. the lowest plan ATT offers) + 30-40 dollar data plan+tax+network access fee + 911 fee + government B.S. fee + Local w/e fee… = nearly 100 dollars and over 100 for 1500+ txt msg plans.
This is NOT fair pricing for using iPhone.
Sprint is offering “True” unlimited plan for under 100 dollar per month (including 3g access) Also,
A lot of people are using subsidy-based network for about 20-30 dollar a month, and actually 40-50 tops for tmo for that matter.

I have an original iPhone and I dont think I’m upgrading. I got it in feburary and with 2.0 It will be amazing. Can’t wait till super monkey ball. In fact I’m using my iPhone now. 3g is great but not for the at&t price.

Despite my reaction to your new iPhone at last summer’s Gnomedex, I’ve begun to see some of the value and I might be encouraged to buy this new iteration EXCEPT…
There is no At&T reception in many areas of Portland, Maine and none on the block where I live. The kid who lives downstairs has an iPhone and it is useless at home.
Even when I lived in New York City, it was well-known that calling someone with At&T service was an iffy proposition, although it may have improved in the two years since I left.
Whatever possessed Apple to make such an innovative product so restrictive? And I’m betting their revenue would be double or triple on the iPhone if it could be used with cell services that actually function.

What amazed me was that iPhone 2 is put out in such a way that small to medium IT departments can customize and test up to deployment under a try-us-out license, leaving lots of room for negotiation when it comes time to buy and deploy.
It is unknown to me how this customized and secure deployment would work under Apple and open source but I feel this is the best yet of another camels nose under the IT tent.
Not mention the Outlook for the rest of us of me.com. Well done Apple.

iPhone 2.0 software is welcome on my original iPhone. MobileMe sounds great–so did .Mac (which kinda sucked).
A MobileMe (that works as advertised–we’ll see…) should be included with the iPhone’s data plan. Why pay $100/ year to sync data when were already paying for a data plan?

My big question is if anyone thinks that the GPS functionality will be coming to the iTouch. I start to drive this October and would love to have a device that plays my music, has internet access, and a gps all in one. While the new iPhone fits this, I am very happy with my current phone service provider, hence the desire for this feature on the iTouch.

And this is why I still won’t be getting an iPhone. Even though the price has dropped to $199 for an 8gb iPhone, I’d still have to sign a contract with at&t. Sorry, I already have a deal with Verizon that I like very much :) You know what would REALLY be awesome? If I could take my old LG down to my local Verizon store and tell them that I want to buy a new iPhone and transfer all the info from my old phone to the new one and keep my contract with Verizon. Now THAT would be something to get excited about.

20GB is still peanuts in this day an age, I was hoping for MobileMe to go up 100gb minimum.
They say Apple it’s pushing video sharing in detriment of iDVD etc. Well, no much video sharing is possible on a paltry 20 gigs…

I’m excited about the new iphone. I didn’t think I’d want one until I saw the price. Yes, the service is more expensive, but there has to be a way to only use the edge and not have to pay for the 3g.
