I rolled out and announced “WicketPixie” a few weeks ago, and was (quite honestly) hoping to have a few more fixes in place before releasing v1.0 to the galaxy. Despite a handful of hiccups, you’re welcome to download and try WicketPixie on your own WordPress blog - provided you have one, or even know what to do with a theme in the first place. All Lockergnome bloggers will have the latest / most optimized version of WicketPixie:
I cannot provide support for this particular theme - I don’t have a support team, but am welcoming any kind of community involvement for helping others with its deployment elsewhere. Garry Conn created this nice installation / configuration guide, too. Since this theme is free, I’d suggest making a donation before emailing me with support questions (which I may or may not have the ability to answer).
The following notes assume you’re using WordPress 2.5.1 (or a similar version) and PHP5. Please read this entire post before installing the theme and emailing me questions I’ve already taken the time to answer / address. Please? You might also watch Andrew’s WicketPixie Installation Videocast.
- You’ll definitely want to edit the home.php file to add your OWN stuff to it - and if you can’t figure it out, you should be able to safely remove home.php and WordPress should fall back to the default (generic) index.php for your home page. Unfortunately, there’s no other way of modifying the home page template at this point.
- You’ll probably want to tweak the CSS files to suit your tastes. I have made quite a few minor modifications to it for my own use on my own blog.
- The sidebar widgets are placed as such.
- To add your social sources to WicketPixie (which you can see in my sidebar and on my “Social Me” page), make sure the WicketPixie Source Manager plugin is enabled on your plugins management page. Once that is done, you should find the “WicketPixie Sources” option in your blog’s “Manage” area. This is where you can add your social accounts at will.
- Your sources will show up in your blog only after you add the “WicketPixie: My Profiles” widget to one of your sidebars (configured in your regular ol’ WordPress Widgets settings page). If you would like your own “Social Me” / lifestream page, you need only create a new WordPress page and use the “Activity Stream” template for it.
- You can have your own news aggregator page with WicketPixie, if you add your favorite sites and feeds to “WicketPixie Faves” found under the WordPress Manage menu. Once your feeds have been added, you will need to create a new Page and use the “Faves” template for it. If you wish to remove the default feeds, you will likely have to edit the faves.php template by hand.
- If you run into random “not writable” errors, make sure the directory in question is writable - which should go without saying, but if you need assistance with this I would suggest contacting your system administrator rather than trying to fix something yourself.
- They’re not necessary, but I strongly recommend installing the following WordPress plugins: WPtouch, FirstRSS, Chunk URLs, and Admin Drop Down Menu.
- If you can, please keep the default credit links in place - I’d really appreciate it.
- You may receive a “Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in activity.php on line 41.” Since I didn’t program the app, I have no idea what’s wrong or how to fix it.
- If you want more Related Links options, you can move that plugin out of the wicketpixie plugin directory, and into your regular ol’ WordPress plugins directory. If you’re not sure how to do it, please leave well enough alone.
- It’s simple to change colors, fonts, and the background image for WicketPixie by looking in the Design section of WordPress - “WicketPixie Options” will be found under there.
- There is a “Share” menu in the top bar that’s hidden by default. You can edit the property for #topbar-share in the screen.css file - change “display: none” to “display: inline” to make it show up. Then, edit the appropriate section in header.php - it’s ready for the ShareThis code, too!
- If you receive a “Fatal error: Class ‘SourceUpdate’ not found in wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/header.php on line 85″ error, it’s because you forgot to enable the WicketPixie Source Manager plugin in WordPress.
- If you receive the “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 19″ error, it’s because your Web host needs to be using PHP5.
- The logo at the top of the theme is your gravatar, and you should already know how to make your own gravatar by now (free).
You can read more about this theme or watch the screencast for more information or guidance.

Great post!
\wp-content\themes\wicketpixie\home.php
edit it to show your youtube videos, there are two section by default one that appears to be a side bar on the home page and one in the center section. Just login to your youtube channel, create a custom player , then past the resulting code into home.php, you need only provide the src= and movie = info, not the entire enbed statement.
faves! edit wp-content\themes\wicketpixie\app\faves.php as it has by default Chris favs in it so clicking delete will not work! the default favs come back. I think this was left in so chris doesnt worry about deleting his stuff. I am working on mod all ready to all you as an admin to remove them all or add them back e.g default.

Line 41: replace

The theme is very odly packaged. The /upload subdirectory is not needed, and should be created by the theme instead. The plugins should be included in the theme directory instead of the plugins directory.
Last thing: the FlexURL stuff is totally deprecated, since this is the regular behavior of WP since long (ie http://planetozh.com/blog/about-plugins/ is redirected to http://planetozh.com/blog/2008/06/about-plugins-and-roles-in-wordpress-mu/ and I’m not using any plugins for this)

If you are getting a “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’” when trying to enbale the Source Manager plugin, make sure that you are using PHP5, and NOT PHP4. It took me a while to figure out the cause and it was because I had PHP4 set as the default on my hosting account. As soon as I changed to PHP5, it worked.

I may have figured out how to get rid of Chris’ favorites. This may completely break everything, although it seems to be working for me so far.
First, I opened the file at wordpressfolder/wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/app/faves.php where wordpressfolder would be the folder on your server where WP lives. Then, I commented out lines 30 - 38 of faves.php. These are the lines that hard code his sites to the faves array. Once I saved the file I was able to remove the sites from the WicketPixie Faves page under the Manage menu in WP. Jeff’s solution will surely be cleaner than this, but this may be a temporary solution for anyone needing one.

WicketPixie is up and running at Crossword Bebop! I had to toggle DreamHost to PHP5, but after that, everything worked automagically. As a WordPress n00b, I had a hard time finding home.php to edit it, but once I did, I was able to get my Flickr photos up.
I have a YouTube account with some videos, but I couldn’t find an equivalent page for my videos, equivalent to the page mentioned in your home.php. I’ll investigate that further tomorrow.
Haven’t started working with WicketPixie Sources and WicketPixie Faves yet, but it’s on my to-do list. I’m feeling pretty good right now with having successfully migrated to WordPress and WicketPixie.

Also, why am I only able to add 4 sources?? I can’t seem to add anymore than 4. I’m sure if I hunt around, I’ll find some tweak, but I’d love some wisdom from someone here..

Ok I figured out the YouTube question I had. I read the other comments. Thanks guys! :) Now my one big issue remains.. why can’t I add more than 4 sources? That has me completely stumped. I go to manage and the source plug-in settings, and I was able to add 4 sources just fine. Starting with the 5th one, it just stopped letting me add anything. I deleted the table, started over, same thing. Anyone else having this problem?

I have come up with a small fix for this theme for internet explorer 7, in IE7 the navigation bars are not aligned properly, i have made a temporary fix for this which aligns the bars into the right places the only thing different is that the top menu bar moves with the page when scrolling instead of it being in a fixed location.
All you have to do is download this css file and replace it with the original one found in the css folder of wicketpixie

So, I’m trying to get 2 things to show up and work with this theme. The first thing is I have 3 twitter accounts I want to display in the top news Source display. So far it only shows the first Feed not the other two.
2nd Twitter and Plurk’s Favicon haven’t yet been able to display in the activity page where as flickr’s favicon has.

What your going to have to do is open the file in the CSS folder called ie7.css and add this to that file since its currently blank.

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /homepages/4/d128031905/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 206
These errors where preventing me from adding sources, for some reason the sourcemanager.php would not create the wik_sources table.
Created wp_wik_sources by hand and everything is working fine now..

[...] WicketPixie’s dad helped me with a few links containing possible fixes and that, plus spending a few hours tweaking numbers (do I know how to have fun on a Saturday night or WHAT??!), I got it working! :) So now all of you who enjoy living life dangerously close to the edge by still using IE (hehehe) can now view this site as intended or as least damn close. Ok, so my first problem is solved (the php error) so now my only problem is the whole latest twitter tweet in the header part. If anyone could help me out I’d appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
PS. sorry for the multiple posts of the other problem, I just didn’t know if it was going thru since I didn’t see it in the comments. LOL

Great theme I really like it. I plan on donating as well.
However, Firefox 3 there are major scrolling issues. I am working to whether confirm it is souly a firefox 3 problem or not. Has anyone else noticed the issue? Since firefox is one of the most used browsers this is potentially a decent sized issue, no? Well that depends on the amount of people using firefox 3.
From what I know right now. Firefox 3 is the only browser to have the scrolling lag issue. It happens on both XP and Vista.
This is the only blog template or website that I know of that has the issue.

I need some help from you guys.
1. how do i push the bar at the top to the top? When I use the theme, the topbar has a visible gap between the firefox tabs.
That was really poorly explained. Sorry.
2. In the sidebar, how do I get 2 columns like Chris has?
Thanks

After an hour and a half of diagnosing, I discovered that there is a coding issue with this theme. If a user has their WordPress installation setup so that only Registered and logged in users can comment, this will cause the themes footer/sidebar to break. I believe it’s because the theme was not coded to handle this user case scenario. The work around is to have an open comment system but then again, not everyone wants that. Thought I would pass this bug report on to you.

Aside from the above, I would like to mention that Twitter updates do not show in the bubble unless you change the font color. (At least for me)
Also, does anyone have any idea how to get the avatar to show next to the text bubble? I’ve manually fixed it in a couple of spaces, but it calls every time you go to a new page, and that is a pain.
Chris, thank you so very much for the theme being donation-based. It really helps those of us on a limited budget (read: poor).

As many of you may notice this blog is running theWicketPixieWordpress “super-theme”. WicketPixie is a Chris Pirillo and Lockergnome product. This is a very cool and interactive theme. And with all the programming that had to be done, it all came at a cost. For WicketPixie 2.x to be relased Chris is asking

Anyone that is having the navbar gap problem with FF3 AND the miss alignment problem in IE7 here is a fix. Edit screen.css in the /css folder.
change:
#topbar {
position: fixed;
float: left;
width: 100%;
padding: 0 0 19px;
background: url(”../images/topbar-bg.png”) repeat-x 50% 100%;
z-index: 999;
margin-top: 0;
}
to:
#topbar {
top: 0;
left: 0;
position: fixed;
float: left;
width: 100%;
padding: 5px 0 19px;
background: url(”../images/topbar-bg.png”) repeat-x 50% 100%;
z-index: 999;
}
