What Are You Paying for Gas?

How high do gas prices have to get before you change your own driving habits, if you haven’t already? I thought, for certain, that there would be less vehicles on the road after gas hit $4 a gallon here in the United States (at least, in the Seattle area). Seems to me that even when we see $6 a gallon, people aren’t going to travel less than they already do today. No matter where you are on the planet, gas isn’t very cheap. There’s little you can do to avoid wallet pain at the pump, though.
It’s times like these that I’m glad I work from home (for myself, no less). I don’t have to fight traffic with regularity, and I don’t have to fill up my gas tank as frequently as others do. But have these higher fuel rates already curbed your own travel routines? I’m guessing “not.”
We can’t just sit at home, and public transportation is not always practical… so what are we supposed to do?
That’s what I’m paying now. What about you?

I am paying $4.85 a gallon in Illinios. Oh yes I am paying way to much. This is getting ridiculous the government has to come up with something different or were all going to go downhill, especially with the economy going to hell and back.

$3.90/gal in Madison, WI with $4.19 the reported price in Milwaukee.
I too, can be glad that I work from home and don’t have to routinely consume more expensive than Champagne priced gas just to go out and make money. At what point does it become more of a waste to commute?
But I do need to become more lucrative from home. That would help a lot!

We are paying around $4 here in Michigan. Yeah, it stinks. It only seems like there isn’t anything we can do about it, but we’ve already pointed out what the government is doing wrong, they just aren’t listening.
For now at least, it won’t hurt my wallet, I don’t get my license for a little under 2 years. Hopefully I’ll have figured out Molecular Transport by then. ;)

I’m paying $6.64 a gallon. It’s getting more than ridiculous now, the government seriously has to do something about it. Either we all switch to electrical cars, or we’ll have nothing to get around with. It’s all going to go someday, and as I mentioned in another blog post, that’s the time that people will start to actually think about what they’re going to do about the gas, but then it’s too late.

I am in the bay area and i am paying 3.98 for gas, and it costs me 63 dollars to fill up. I think that the only way to solve the energy crisis is to build nuclear power plants and make more electric cars. The problem with ethanol is that its causing the world food crisis, too expensive, and less efficient with gas. Many of the same problems with hydrogen which costs too much money to harvest, less efficient than gas, and way more expensive. Nuclear energy and electric cars is the only feasible option in my eyes. Gas is never going to go dramatically down in price from here unless we find a huge source of oil. Anwar is not that place which is the nursery of the world and it is too important to our environment and the world ecosystem to destroy with our oil drilling equipment.

My cousin is paying about PHP 2500 a week. That’s $57.67 a week. Gas here in our place is pretty high. Even if it’s that high, my cousin depends on it mainly because of his work. He travels from town to town delivering stocks and making deals everyday.

Wow $4.85 a gallon!! I’m paying $3.99 in northwest Indiana. I fill up about $25 at a time (in my 2003 Toyota Camry).
According to CNN, one of the better ways to find the cheapest prices around your area is to browse the web. Here are some websites that they recommended.
http://www.gasbuddy.com
http://www.gasbuddytogo.com (Mobile Device)
the second website really helps when you are on “the go” :).

See http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx for the US. It fluctuates quite widely; just yesterday IL was a bright red and tonight it’s a light orange.
Never, though, does it say the trip I’m about to take from St. Louis, MO to Seattle, WA is going to be cheap…

Sounds like it’s not a whole lot more up here even though gas is taxed more heavily.

Hi there,
I think our gas price is hard to beat. Not that it is much to be proud of.
We are currently paying 2 dollar 31 cents per liter here in Sweden.
With a conversion to gallon that is then 8 dollar 75 cents per gallon.
So one could say that we are paying a bit to much for gas here in Sweden.

At the moment I am paying $3.79 a gallon. I have decided to not drive as much as I used to. I now walk to places that are close to my home when I can and have started to get that dusty bike out of the garage and use it a few times now. I will try and even increase the amount I use the bike because we all know gas prices are just going to increase! Unfortunate, but these are the prices we must pay for taking our planet for granted for so long.

About 3.80 per gallon. Yes I do sit at home alot. ;p Dont have a choice. It’s either that or go broke. I only leave the house for work or errands (consoladate errands) and for friends once or twice a week usually. I dont hit up the town every night. ;p And my friends live relatively close by. I dont go to San Diego anymore to see my other friend. Or rarely. I try and do the subway here in L.A when I can, like from the Valley into Hollywood.
I have a small car, not too bad on gas even though it’s old.
Thus is life in a car-dependent city. I wish I lived in New York.

I will give you an example for prices here in Germany:
1 gallon = 3.785 liters
Latest gas price: 1,49 € / l
1,49 € * 3,785 = 5,64 €
5,64 € = 8,89 $
So it’s 8,89 $ / Gallon here ;-)

We are just going over the $4.00 a gallon mark. Last fill up a few days ago was $3.93 and it took almost $60.00 to fill my Honda Civic Hybrid. (Yes Hybrid, a car I bought when gas was still under $2.00 a gallon.) My driving habbits have not changed much, however I am thinking about where I would drive now and how to maximize my gas usage. Today I had a dealer call and say your product arrived. I could have driven down there today (50+miles one way) but since it’s close to my work, I arranged to have the guy meet me after business hours so I can cut 48 miles out of the journey. What are you doing to save gas?

Here in Sydney, Australia, today the regular unleaded prices were $1.59 per litre. Which converts to $6.92 usd/gallon if my converters aren’t wrong. To make matters worse, our public transport system isn’t exactly top-notch either. It just isn’t convenient to take buses and trains when you often have to wait half an hour in-between services. At least I have a ds to keep me company though.
I just wonder how high the oil prices will rise, and when will electric and solar powered cars become commonplace. Unleaded E10 is pretty new over here (10% Ethanol in Unleaded), so I think we’re pretty behind.

We use the litre system in Norway, so I´ll have to do some math.
For 1 litre is 13.07 NOK
1 Gallon = 3.7854118 Litre
Price of 1 gallon in Norway = 49.47 NOK
49.47 NOK = 9.796 $
So for 1 gallon I´ll have to pay 9.796 $ in Norway.

I remember when I started driving about 10 years ago, gas was .98 per gallon… now… well, it sucks! I don’t want to even get started on my gas price rant, but we cannot keep letting these prices escalate and do nothing about it. Not too long ago we became complacent @ $2.00 per gallon, then $3.00. They play cat and mouse with the prices until they condition us to become complacent with whatever they want to charge for gas. Of course, it’s our fault for being dependent on oil, there are so many other technologies out there that oil should no longer be a factor in transportation, but why do you suppose these technologies aren’t being embraced? Well I better not go into my rant on that, I will be called a conspiracy theorist.

It is $3.98 a gallon here in metro-east Illinois. Across the river in St. Louis it is about .20 cheaper. I haven’t noticed an appreciable difference in the number of cars on the road though. I believe people are going to adjust their spending habits first and cut back on other things before changing their driving habits.

I am paying $4.20 a gallon, and I own my own lawn service business. Imagine what happened to my prices……
Three years ago when my family bought our Toyota Matrix it only took $15.00 to fill up it’s tank. Three years later it takes almost $50.00! Supply and demand? I don’t think so.
What is causing it? I think that the Arabs who own the companies know that gas is almost like air for us, and we”need” it. So they raise prices and don’t produce as much oil. And why not take oil from the Iraqis who we liberated and are not baby-sitting? Or from Mexico who gets millions of dollars because of the illegal immigrants who are in America? We have to pay for their health-care and they don’t pay taxes! It is ridiculous!
It is very interesting though. I have been reading articles that say that the number of people (and businesses) who use video conferencing has gone up exponentially. This totally makes sense. Why not just have a meeting with a person who lives in China over the computer instead of fly them out the Seattle? It is just way more practical.
So the bottom line is this. We need a solution to our problem, and once again geeks are a part of it.

$3.97 as of last night in Orlando and now they are talking about scaling down the bus routes (which is the only sort of transportation my family and I use). If the government -really- wanted us to use less gas, wouldn’t it make more sense to subsidize public transit? Instead, their holding meetings with the topic of cutting it back… -and- they hold these meetings after 8 in the evening so that the lines they are talking of cutting are already shut down. That way, those of us dependent on them aren’t able to attend and make our voices heard.

In Fresno, CA it about a $4.50. It doesn’t effect me that much as I live very close to both my work and school. On average I fill up every three weeks so the higher cost amounts to about a $25 per $1 dollar of gas price increase. Gas would probably have to be about $7 to effect my every travel habits. That not to say that it hasn’t effected by leisure travel habits.
I drive a pick-up that get alright gas mileage and in order for me to get a more fuel efficient vehicle the fuel savings would have to pay for the cost of replacement vehicle. Which means that gas would have to be over $8 a gallon. The calculations are pretty rough and with a break even point in 5 years and they assuming gas price do not increase further.
Based on (16mpg to 30mpg, 7000 travel mile per year, cost of replacement $8000)

I filled up on monday when it was only $3.63/gl, paid about $51.51 for a full tank here in mesa, arizona.
to me, i think these gas prices have changed my driving habits. it puts into perspective what’s “important” on my errand’s list. can’t always go to drive around for fun now. only go from work to home (and during the year - school).
with gas prices moving up, you’d think that people would cease to buying trucks or SUVs but that isn’t that case around here anyway. i’ve seen lots of people on the road with brand new off-the-lot plates. it’s crazy! but i guess those people have the $$$$ to it fork over.
people keep talking about the electric car, but there are other alternate vehicles out there in the prototype stage. check out the link!

Well… it’s $3.88 here in Louisville at this point. It hit $4.02 last week. It was then that I really started thinking what I am going to do to change my habits. I’ve noticed that I haven’t been going anywhere that much. (As I right this, I’m on a trip for Memorial Day in St. Louis… go figure) And I’ve also stopped eating out as much. What else can we expect? This has nothing to do with taking our planet for granted for too long (what does that mean?) China and Mexico drill for oil at will and our own enviromental whackos stop us for looking for our own at every turn - we’ve allowed them to take us hostage. We haven’t done squat to produce our own oil since the seventies (refineries or drilling). The Chinese and Mexicans are laughing their butts off at us while they drill for oil off OUR coasts.
Compound this with our Senators giving us a dog and pony show with oil executives…it’s laughable. Are we really that dumb to believe this garbage?
I’m all for solar and wind power, but it’s simply not a viable alternative, YET. We must drill for our own and become less reliant on OPEC. Just the mention that the US is exploring for it’s own oil will drive down speculation price of crude oil.

The government is powerless to do anything. It’s up to the consumer to use less fuel by driving more efficient vehicles (mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles) and utilizing mass-transit.
Americans brought this upon themselves during the SUV boom. We all knew that gas prices were increasing and still people that had no need for towing/hauling capacities provided by SUVs yet we still bought them because “Its the American way”.
In my area, gas is at $4.20/gallon and I’m already looking to move closer to my office so I don’t have the 20 mile drive (one way).

In Belgium, the prise for gas is about 1,58 euro per litre, which equates to about 9,41 USD per US Gallon.
It seems that the US gas prizes are playing ‘catch-up with the rest of the world :-)
In Belgium, like the rest of Europe, Diesel is more popular than ‘regular’ gas for cars. It’s ‘only’ about 1,42 Euro per litre, or about 8,46 USD per gallon. If I fill up my tank, its bout 75-80 euro, or about 120-125 USD per refill.
I don’t see much reasons for complaining for you guys…

Gas is $3.80 in Waco, TX.
Certainly in large cities with a good public transit infrastructure driving less is an option, but I don’t know what people in smaller cities or large cities with poor public transit are going to do.
When I lived in Chicago I drove a lot less than I do here in Texas, simply because of a lack of choice.
Add the brutal summer weather here and you are hard pressed to find people even walking short distances, everything is by car.

In the USA, gas is pretty cheap compared to other countries such as the United Kingdom. I never really think about how much it costs, because when I fill up the car, it has to be filled up, so one day it could be $50 for the tank to be filled, where the next day it could be $75. I know it is getting expensive on the US standards, but in reality, it is still very cheap.

As of this morning, I’m paying $3.85/Gal. One thing that gets me it the fact that there is an oil refinery (where they make the gas) less than 10 miles from my home, yet gas is cheaper in Tennessee than it is here. The government has opened a couple of million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for drilling, which is supposed to lower the prices. I don’t think the oil companies will lower any price unless forced to by the Government. Alternate fuels will need to be found and soon, but the oil companies will fight it tooth and nail. until the government steps in and funds some of these alternate meathods, oil companies will continue to control the bloodline of America, and the world.

I pay $4.15 a gallon here in NYC. It has curbed my traveling a little bit and there IS a lot less traffic on the highway. However, public transportation is very effective here =]

I live in the Bay Area too… gas prices are over $4.20 at my area.
Lol on the news they say that people are using bicycles to go to work. And I thought millions migrated here just so they can have a car. Yes to car, no to gas XDD

Does 3.99 and 9/10 counts as $4.00 US? That’s the going rate at Costco in Livermore, CA and it’s one of the cheapest around.

that works out at $8.99 per gallon, in some parts of the UK it can be more than £1.30…
So if your american and have posted on this blog, you should stop moaning and count yourselves lucky!

believe it or not I pay about 1/3 usd per liter (the premium). It’s about 1 dollar per gallon. That’s the price because I live in middle east (where you get your oil from. I know you think that we are gaining a fortune, but we aren’t because everything became more expensive.

Over the northern border, I’m paying $1.25/L, about $4.73/US gallon.
Even as a student I’ve changed my driving more then a little. I’m probably saving 20% by driving like a granny, it’s a little weird to drive slow. On the upside, my old 1992 Jeep will probably live longer because of it.
North America is hooked on oil. Making ethanol out of corn is just taking away from the food supply. I believe we should pour funding into long term power, preferably renewable. For much of the southern most states, solar is quite feasible, not so much for most of Canada though. If only we could get solar efficiency to push beyond ~20% …

Hello Chris, around here gas is still high, what else is new the lowest is about $3.70, but as we progress through 2008, gas will probably still be at the extremes. The government needs to cut down on the ethanol because i think it’s only making prices worse. Well, let’s hope that gas will go down!

$3.69 here… But I was in the UK last month and paid almost $9 a gallon. I think maybe we’re bitching a bit too much.

Just filled up yesterday at $4.05. Way to much in my own opinion. Anyone remember when gas was bellow a dollar? I think I was like 12 at the time.

$3.89, but if it hits $4 I’m going to buy an electric bike of some sort. Come on people, you can drop the dirty crude! Save your cash and buy a boat XD

In Germany we pay roughly 10 to 13 USD per Gallon. I really hope that the prices are rising, since we passed the point of Peak of Oil.

Wow.. ..almost $4 per gallon - how lucky you are!
I’ve just filled up my BMW 325i here in Glasgow, Scotland at a cost of 115.9p per litre. Translated into US measurements, that’s $8.67 per US gallon.
Also.. ..it’s been going up here at a steady 2 to 3% per month every month for the last year.

You can check out gas prices by zipcode here: http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx?zip=&src=Netx
Gas isn’t a public service it’s an industry. The government can’t really do anything about it in a free market society. If they could would you really want them to? All your tax R&D dollars have been going to Hydrogen research because nobody will ever use that technology.
There were working electric cars in the 90s when battery capacity was like 1/8th what it is now.

I’m also in the Seattle area - so you know how much gas is out here - and have a pretty good commute from Sammamish out t Ballard (about 25 miles).
I’ve taken public transport a few times, but it adds about 2+ hours to my day and with my job I frequently have to stay late which would equal missing the bus so it isn’t really an option for me at this point.
More than gas, the main factor that would get me to drive less and take public transportation more is when they decide to implement a toll on the bridges that cross lake Washington and how much they are. I believe I’ve heard $8-$10 being thrown out there as possibilities and at that point I’ll be taking the bus.

I got a summer internship so I could get experience in engineering and make some money over the summer. It’s a great job, but it’s also a bit of a drive. With gas prices as high as they are in the Chicago area I almost feel like I am working just so I can afford to get to work haha.

I live in Allentown, PA (about 1 hour north of Philadelphia) and the price I paid yesterday was $3.85. Boy am I glad that I have a 12 gallon tank in my Toyota. Corolla that has a 5-speed manual transmission. I have absolutely NO sympathy for people that complain about gas prices when they are driving as gas-hungry V-8 SUV. Sorry folk, you’ve come to the wrong place.

its $4.09 here in california, and thats the cheapest. I work at home too thank god for that, but occasionally I look at the gas prices and the price in total and just sigh. Its only a matter of time before we use a different fuel source.
Great post Chris!

My complaint is the $99 limit on many pumps. My Suburban has a 40 gal tank. If I try to fill up at Costco when I have less than half a tank the pump will stop before I am full. Luckily I don’t have to drive that beast much anymore. Pumps are going to have to add a third digit to the readout - I think this is a financial limitation since it looks like there is room in the display.
