A USB Grommet Hub for your Home Office

Everyone knows that I’m addicted to USB devices. Because of this, I need several USB hubs, but my desk is only so big. I read about this product not long ago. So, when I saw it in a store I had to buy it.
It fits ‘the hole’. When I say that, it fits a grommet hole that is in my desk. It’s a USB hub that sits inside those grommet holes. You know what those are: they’re the holes in your desk where cords may feed through. The Ativa In-Desk 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub is a space-saving, in-desk USB hub lets you connect your USB devices, including cameras, flash drives and printers. The 4 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports provide transfer speeds of up to 480 Mbps. It’s backward compatible with USB 1.1. It fits easily into a 3″ or 2″ hole on your desktop. The hub connects directly to your computer with the included USB cable. The package includes the 4-port USB hub, a mounting ring, an AC power adapter, a USB cable and the user manual.
If you’re going to be having a hole in your desk, you may as well make use of it! This is one of those products that once you see it, you’re like “oh yeah! I really need that!”. Be careful when buying USB hubs, though. Some of them are not compatible with USB 2.0, and that could pose a problem for you. You want the fastest speeds with uploading and downloading to and from your device that you can get. Make sure any hub you buy is capable of handling high-speed USB devices.
If you know of any other cool home office products that I may be able to populate my desk with, please email me at chris@pirillo.com. Of course, I really want to know about USB devices, as well.

Another thing that I look for when buying USB Hubs… are they powered by the computer, or a wall outlet? If I’m doing simple things, like transferring pics from a digital camera, or perhaps syncing my iPhone, then I’m fine with using a computer powered hub. If I’m doing something a bit more hardcore, such as running an external drive, or perhaps a hard drive… then I prefer a wall outlet powered hub. What do you need it to do, that is something you really need to take into account.

I guess that one of many conditions for a technology to become a standard is to be honest. To me USB interface has that since it is actually Universal. You can connect such a great range of devices that you allways run out of enough ports.

Brilliant. I love it, I too have trouble plugging in all my usb devices and have been looking to buy a hub soon, but size matters to me. So this little thing looks like it will fit my desk perfectly. Thanks for the info Chris.

I have a story to tell you:
One day, I acquired a USB hub. I was very excited, as I now had more ports to plug my devices into, as my keyboard, 3D navigator, etc. were taking up the other ports. I hurry to plug my camera into the hub, and Windows responds with this:
“You should try plugging this device into a USB 2.0 for higher speeds.”
I frowned and was sad.
Then, I acquired a Logitech G15 keyboard, I thought it was awesome because it had 2 USB ports. Now, I only plug my USB mouse into one of those 2 ports, because those ports are not supplied with enough power to enable most other devices.
Again, I frowned and was sad.
So, those are my two stories, both have sad endings. Will I ever be happy with USB hubs? Watch next time to find out.

Great device! I personally don’t need al the usb connections as I have enough on my computer to sustain the devices I use. Also I don’t have a hole in my desktop, so it wouldn’t be of much use.

This is something I really need. I have one of these holes and actually putting it to use would be nice. Also this will make it easier to quickly sync stuff like my iPod, or photos because I store my PC behind the Desk (needs a little more ventaliation but it works for the moment) this way no cords in site. Having this will finish it off. so now I don’t need to crawl back there to plug something in or out

The invention of the USB has been so instrumental in making hardware user friendly.I appreciate Chris’s comments about making certain you purchase a hub with UBB 2. I currently use a USB hub in order to attach several devices to my computer. I find it frustrating that USB 1 is still on the shelf. Its almost unethical to sell someone USB 1. Also I would like to thank chris for putting me on to what a Grommet Hly USB hub is. How many people know the official name of that hole? lol…anyway, the punch line here is, from here on out, only buy devices that can handle USB 2 technology.

Its interesting you would ask about things to populate your desk with, as just the other day I stumbled on the site linked above. On this site are -many- little usb ‘gadgets’ such as fans, to sit near your computer and keep you cool, and even a tiny vacuum to clean up the various spills through out the day. There is even this one: http://www.wowzzers.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=439
a bendi keyboard which claims to be spill proof. Now Not all of these little toys may be as useful, but I am -seriously- considering this one as it may cut down on the number of replacements I’m forced to buy in a year.

Looks like its a very nice little gadget to have. Im guessing with all your stuff on and aronund your desk space would be very tight, and this thing is small enough to fit pretty much anyone’s needs. Too bad it only has 4 ports though; I think a slightly larger one with more ports could be more effective, but as i said before your space is a lot tighter than most so you need the small one to work well :)

That’s pretty neat Chris. It’s actually amazing the little gizmos that are on the market these days. I love USB devices as well… I was looking at this little USB stripper @ Fry’s… lmao. Apparently when plugged in to your computer she dances around the pole and all that. There’s also the popular humping dog that you use in your laptop USB…lol. There’s no shortage of strange and some useful devices.

That is a very neat little thing cause i don’t have enough usb ports, i have only two though, there are many little usb toys, some you really have to have, same are there just for fun, nowdays i can’t stop laughing whenever i hear usb or Proprietary, cause did a funny video to manufactures to stop making proprietary usb connections, i would have been angry too.
I can’t wait for to see how Usb 3.0 will work, it’s said that 3.0 will use fiberoptics which will be 10 times faster then 2.0 but you will be able to still use 2.0., in june or july people will release more specs on Usb 3.0 but it wont be out in the store before 2009/2010.

This sounds really awesome. I’ve never had this issue though where I’ve run too many things out of USB… I tend to always have enough ports. My PC typically has at least 3 or 4 and I tend to use all of them… but never more or less! :) Maybe I’ve just gotten used to not needing more or something, but I’ve never had the issue where I say “Gosh, I need another USB port… darn.”
I will keep this in mind though definitely if I (or my husband) need one later!). Thank you for the post.
Kind Regards,

I’m also a usb fan. And also love firewire devices.
Pretty much if it plugs into a computer, I’ll try it out.
I recently installed a 5 port usb hub in the back of my computer, 4 external and 1 internal. Love the data transfer speed of usb 2.0.

This is not a new product necessarily. I saw them a few years ago at Staples. It is a pretty good idea, but the desk I currently have in my room does not have one of those Grommet things. (In fact, I did not even know that is what it was called until I read this blog post.)
I try to stay away from the USB hubs that are powered by the USB port itself. I find they are flakey and eject drives prematurely. I now only use the USB hubs that require an AC adapter to operate.

I saw a desk not long ago that had USB hubs integrated into it. You simply plug in the one USB cord from the hubs to your computer and you have access to ports directly from your desk. The price, compared to other desks without this feature, was rather high, but I am keeping my eyes on it for a future desk purchase.

One cool usb thing that i like is a flash drive with the U3 feature. It pretty much acts as an operating system for the drive, holding applications (that you put on the drive) such as firefox, or open office, and letting you sort through an interesting menu of features the flash drives have. I found it initially when buying my first several gig usb drive, and soon established a little collection of drives (one for games, work, web-brosing, ect…)
the U3 system’s website is http://www.u3.com

Those wholes in desks are such a waste of space I feel, about time they fill them with something useful. I remember when I first realized that they put electrical outlets in the holes of tables at my school and i was excited. I don’t use that many USB devices, but it sure beats having to reach around the back of this huge thing and plugging stuff in.

Always can use more USBs, but I think they should have been able to fit at least six onto that thing. If you look at it in reality, it only takes one and gives you two, which, in case you aren’t good at math, means you only have one more than you started with. Sure there is the one on the bottom, but it is almost inacessable, not to mention that 90% of USB devices are designed to be Desktop devices, not Deskbottom devices.
