How to Tie a Tie Knot

Enjoy seeing me in a tie… I don’t do it very often. I was attending a conference in Washington DC when I recorded this video, and thought I would share with you all the proper way to tie a tie.

First you need to make sure that you flip your shirt collar up, so the tie will go underneath it as it should. Make sure the thicker part of the tie hangs a bit lower than the thinner part. Cross the thick part over top of the thinner part, and pinch them together. Bring the thicker part around the back, making a loop. Bring that end up between the collar and that loop. Grab the bottom of the thick part of the tie, and push it down through the gap that was made in between those pieces.

As you can see, the thinner part of the tie is hanging down too low. You can either tuck it into your shirt so no one notices it (it also keeps it in place). Or, you can re-tie it again.

Don’t forget to put your collar back down when you’re finished, for a polished look.

huh…so thats how you do it. I’ve been making a fool of myself all these years.

Am I seeing right — a navy jacket, a pink shirt and a green tie?

What is the conference about anyway?

Woah, wtf for a second I thought this was a household hacker video O_O

there’s a 3rd option:
to cut the extra off XP

Chris is left handed.

So you finally got on the GQ cover? lol

thanks chris for that video

Awkward thing, I wear that EVERY Sunday. And that is the same tie I have.
W00t

I just loosen my tie everytime i wear it, and just putting it on again, tied..

I prefer the Half-Windsor Knot method.
it doesn’t have that crooked look

teehee, I thought you were going to show us how to tie the knot. ;)

Your outfit looks great by the way!

you do your ties different to how we’re taught, you yanks are a crazy bunch!

glad for this vid cus i have a leaving ceremony tomorow in school

It just came when I needed it. I didn’t do a tie before (thanks to T-shirts), but now tie is much easier than I thought. Thanks Chris.

That’s a Four-in-Hand knot and it’s the easiest knot for a tie. I like using Half-Windsor knot for a symmetrical, thicker knot.

it’s not good for the tie and it’s all best to save it flat on a tie hanger.

I most be weird but I love wearing ties. Just makes me look good. For me, when the thinner part is longer than that thicker part, I normally tuck in at a higher button. Usually one button after the knot. I hope the presentation when went.

Thank you very much for this video. I never knew how to put on a tie. I’ve always had my mother or wife do it for me. When I got married, my mother bought me this awesome tie that looks like a real tie, but it actually has this zipper mechanism. It’s very cool.

Good idea Chris… These are the things they -should- teach in school and never do. But for the first time ever, I’m being told that the video is nolonger available. Why might that be?

This was by far the most informative video I’ve seen so far (at least the first that kept me interested to the very end) as to how to tie.. well… ties. Being a woman, having this knowledge means a lot to me - especially when my husband needs help for a big conference or something.

I really enjoyed watching the… short-cuts that you use Chris! :) Although, being a woman and a perfectionist… I’d probably op to retie the tie! Either way, I thought it was cute (I know… the word every man despises!).

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Chris I am getting married on June 28th and I had forgotten how to tie a tie. It has been at least 10 years since I have worn a tuxedo. I was actually worried that I would not remember how to tie one thanks again Chris

i have to wear one for work every day but i kinda screw up on the end doesnt look right but oh well as long it gets tied

This will be good for kids who don’t know how to tie a knot! I say get a job where you have to wear a tie every day and you will have it down to a science in one week!

.Why do so many men not know how to do this right? Here’s a question for you who wore the first tie and why? I bet it was a frenchman. He must have thought that his neck needed a little something. lol

yay im in the vid! im moogs!

I don’t wear a tie hardly ever and I never knew how to tie one. So I always had someone else tie my ties for me once and then put them in the closest tied so when I do them they are already tied. :) BUT NOW, thanks to your video which I wouldn’t have looked for but watched because it was in your blog feed, I now know how to tie one so thanks Chris.

You were in washington dc! I live in VA which is 1 hour from there.

Thanks for the help, Chris! I’m definitely am going to Bookmark this page, so when I go to the prom (a geek going to the prom lol) I won’t look like an idiot wearing a clip-on tie. Thanks!

… Still not the 8 bit tie… =( Anyways… Ok, time for a confessions…….. I still don’t know how to tie a tie. Seriously.. my wife ties them for me. I’ve never been able to figure it out. =( Call me a geek… but I’m a useless one at that. lol.

Funny thing.. I remember helping an ex of mine with his Tie (never done it before in my entire life, or seen it done!) and I did it “perfect” on the first try. LOL

I like to tie my ties simply like that too. There are like 5 or 6 different styles I know of. I also on occasion use a windsor knot or the double windsor knot. They are the ones with the fat knots at the top and look good with certain types of shirts. Thanks for the tucking it into your shirt tip, I never really thought about doing that I usually retie the tie to get the proper length after I mess it up the first time.

Well, that is the fancy way to tie a tie. The quick but not so fancy way is to take the big side and wrap it around the small part twice, bring it up through the top (near your neck) and then slide it between the second loop and the small end. Tighten and adjust.

This video is officially my tie tying guide.
No joke.
:P
Thanks!

I typically have 2 ways of tying a tie. One is simliar to this one, the other is what I think it’s called a double knot so I have a more even shaped tie. Have to make it tight or else it looks very strange. Double know can be a bit short on the excess part so no need to tuck in your pants.. Sorry. ;)

Same way i tie my ties
i wear one every day except saturday and sunday tho (school)
Theres many differant ways to tie ties
And then you have zip ties and clip ons lol
but hope you had fun with your tie

the best tie tying guide :)

believe it or not, I’ve been looking for a video like this several times. I have bought two ties and worn none because I can’t tie it.

I go to private school, so tie every morning. I just find it easier though to just have like all 50 of my ties tied already on the rack so I can just pull it on and tighten it. But this is a very informative video for all those novice tie tiers.

Thanks Chris. I never really did know how to tie a tie, I always had to ask my mom or dad how to tie it for me. Then when I get it tied right, I just slightly untie it a bit to pull it off of my head, and I leave it tied for when I need it next. There was one time though my parents weren’t home, and I had to tie it. I turned to YouTube. You wouldn’t believe how many videos there are on how to tie a tie. Well thanks for showing us geeks that do not know how to tie a tie.

Double Windsor… Don’t be lazy…

This is something that I have been desperate to learn. As soon as I saw your video I got out one of my ties and tried over and over again until I finally got it. Thanks!

Tip: I put the finner part ligned with the last button (that shows after tucking in) so when you are finished the tie should be perfect ligned with the belt (that is the right position) and the finner part shoudn’t appear.
PS.: Sorry about the english, I’m not too good at it :P

thnx for this vid cuz i have culmination soon

Great hotel and video Chris. TIes are nice. lol.

Thanks for the vid Chris. I can’t ever get this type of tie tying to look right on me. I always go with the double windsor…
Pros -
Nice sharp triangle with just the right amount of dimple in the tie at the knot.
You’ll look like a well dressed congressman! (Could be a con…!)
Cons -
I’m 6′4″ and it leaves very little skinny side to reach the tag to tuck it in.
Takes a while to master and most times still requires a ‘re-do’ to get perfect.

Finally a good HowTo tie a tie guide, when others has tried to explain how to tid a tie, then they make it more complicated then it needs to be, i don’t wear a tie so often, but once in a while, like weddings and other extra special occasion, i don’t feel so comfortable in suit and tie.
those other guides out there are to hard to follow so i end up tying the tie only once then i loosen it a bit only so i can slip out.
Well done Chris at this excellent guide, keep up the good work.

haha we go from top fives to basic skills any guy needs to know. Its nice to have resources such as this to learn things like that though. A lot of people will benefit from this tutorial sort of thing. Btw chris, spiffy tie :)

i prefer a double windsor know……but to each his own i guess :)

Nice now I can finally go to occasions requiring ties!!!

i only wear a tie on proms and other formal occasions… i’m not a fan of semi-formal/ formal wear either…

Thanks for the info… now maybe I can stop wearing all these clip on ties. Not really, I hate clip ons, there’s no style behind those… besides what would a clip on tie look like with $500 crocodile shoes?!

Nice tutorial on tying a Tie Chris. Perfect timing too since During the Few weeks High School Proms are happening. What a coincidence lol.

Wow! Love the new site and you are one fine looking man! LOL…. I loved the tutorial. A little lesson of life. Well, I am out and I am downloading the podcast right now and puting them on my iPod Touch right now!

I knew that haha :P

I knew that haha :P

I knew that haha :P

thank god for this video!
*throws out clip-on ties*

i never knew how to tie a tie due to the lack of said object.

Thanks for the video. It’s easier for people to follow along on how to tie a tie with someone actually doing it, than through pictures on the internet. But for those who are to lazy to learn, there are always clip-ons.

*Takes notes for my senor year in High School.* You know, if I go to prom. Hah! Me….Prom…If only one day. :P

-Great Chris

Haha looking pretty sharp there, Mr. Pirillo. I tie my ties almost like that but I think my method is like double windsor or something? I forget the name but my dad taught me it. Almost exactly like that but there’s one more step before looping it around and through.

HAHAHAHHA!!!! dude your a lifesaver. I am 30 years old and have never tied a tie in my life!!!!! I work in Tokyo, Tie capital of the world it seems and have my Brother in laws wedding coming up. Now I know how to tie one. I dont have to panic when the dry cleaners untie my pre tied ties. Thanks!!!!!

Keep in mind guys, this is not the only way to tie a tie. Here is a link to step-by-step walkthroughs for the other ways to tie a tie:

Brady

I thought only women tied ties.
Thinking that’s worked for me so far…

I find the “Four-In-Hand” knot to be the easiest:

http://www.tie-a-tie.net/fourinhand.html

I have to wear a tie for work and I just google “How to tie a tie and It gave me that “tie-a-tie.net” website and I was able to find out how to do it within a few minutes.

It is a good thing you made this video, Chris! I find that many people I work with have no idea how to wear a tie. They put it around their neck and do some random stuff.

ROFL, I see what your saying. L

i learned to tie a tie at 9 and forgot thanks for reminding me

this is absolute ****

Whew, you saved me! No one explained that full-circle bit there. I’ve never worn a tie before, but this video worked!

Clip-on ties are where it’s at, no fuss, just clip and unclip. XD

Either that or get my dad to tie it XD

I prefer the Double Windsor and Square Knot.

I always guessed Ponzi did it for you, haha :)

I spent 6 years in the Army, and as some of you know, a tie is needed for the dress uniforms. During basic training our drill instructor chose my tie to use as a teaching aid for how to properly tie one. For six years that tie remained tied. I simply hung it up with my uniform already tied and bought a seperate tie to display for inspections. Because of this I never learned how to tie one.

I hate it when that little part of the tie hangs down…I usually re-tie too.
I wear ties less than Chris does…usually once every decade and a half.
t-shirts and jeans for me.

Oh yes here we can see the death of a British gentleman the American tie knot
And with this little cheating the queen would evacuate whole London.
http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-tie-a-tie-using-a-full-windsor-knot
but however it looks god on Chris.

double windsor looks better in my opinion…

you just saved my graduation day lol

you just saved me lol i no how to tie it now

you just saved me lol i no how to tie it now

that’s cool, man. and funny tho.

From about the age of 5, I have been wearing ties about every single day! I am fortunate enough to have three older brothers who were always at hand to help me to tie my tie! It took me along time to get a grasp of, but I got it in the end.
When you think about it though, its a bit of an odd piece of clothing isn’t it?! But then again, it completely finishes an outfit!

Cool, thanks for that, but there are many different ways to tie a knot tough ^^ couple of weeks ago my English teacher showed us how to tie knot also, just saying.

I never had a problem with tieing a tie. I always had a problem with remembering how to freaking tie them! When I relearned, I always then had the funky knot at the top. It was either too fat, or too skinny. Then I had the problem of how to keep it long enough cuz I am mega tall. All in all, very good.

Good advice, but I probably won’t remember it. Still, it is something you SHOULD teach people to do. Not you as in YOU, but as in people.

I’m not sure how I learned how to tie a tie… I’m almost certain it was some kind of annoying song.

hey dude u saved me from not going to my graduation thanks

My knots aren’t usually crooked like that, you have to pay attention to be straight when you round the tie over the knot before bringing it between your collar and knot to finish it.

If I wasn’t 100% straight looping around, I usually hold the loop as I snake the tie trough it and when I tighten the knot so it doesn’t move.

Your tie should also be down to around your waistband.

Yes, works like a charm.

I knew how to make a knot but i forgot. Thanks for the video.Relearning is a part of our lifes

I shall savor this for my whole life, but really I’m not too good at tying one, just kinda found a way to make it look ok and went with it.

I worked in a performing arts center in High School where I learned the intricacies of the Windsor, half-Windsor,and the coachman knots. The only one I ever still use is the half-windsor.

Nice demo! I don’t wear a tie often, but I have one that zips up to save me the trouble of tying the tie. Looking sharp, Chris!

mine too. It’s today for me. Congradulations

thankk you so much. it’s nerd day at my school .my father already left for work. so thankk you!

prom today.. so thank you :P
